Commercial Street now boasts not one, but two, tattoo shops
Would you care for a tattoo of a pug wearing a space helmet? Or a purple Persian cat eating pizza?
Moth Studio is a new place for that on Commercial Street.
In August, tattoo artist Hollie Linn moved her three-year-old studio from a building at Atlantic Street and Broadway to a 1,600-square-foot space crowned with a pressed-tin ceiling on West Commercial Street.
It has a staff of four tattoo artists and five apprentices, Linn said. She declined to reveal her investment in relocating the business but said she’s self-funded her studio from the start.
Moth Studio (formerly Moth & Ink) is within eyeshot of White River Brewing Co, and it’s a five-minute walk away from another tattoo studio on Commercial Street, Ink Ink.
“We really wanted to transition into more walk-ins,” Linn said, citing White River, Moon City Pub and Lindberg’s — and their live music — as being likely to help bring in new customers. “C-Street is trying to be more artsy, and we think there will be people who want more artistic tattoos.”
Linn and her “employee and right-hand man,” Bryan Myles, said they pride themselves on custom designs. They avoid “flash” — those standardized tattoo designs found hanging on the wall, or in thick binders, in many traditional tattoo shops.
“We’re about custom, art-inspired tattoos, instead of just flash,” Myles said. “There are street shops where as far as artistic ability — you just need to trace. It’s easy for people to just Google and trace a design.”
Linn and Myles said people who want tattoos in Springfield are keen on inspirational quotes, Christian imagery, geometric Indian mandala designs and watercolor tattoos.
“You can do anything on skin that’s on paper or print these days,” Myles said. Using his own body as an example, he showed a tattoo portrait of Waylon Jennings on one arm, an “alien racing a spaceship wearing an alpaca helmet” on one leg.
Linn’s favorite tattoo is a portrait of her young son that decorates her left leg.
Usually, the least you can expect to spend is about $50. In Springfield, tattoo artists’ work runs about $100 per hour, Linn and Myles said.
Along with daily tattoo appointments, Linn said she plans for Moth to be part of Commercial Street’s events schedule.
She also plans a "grand relocation" event Oct. 22 and said details will be forthcoming on the store's Facebook page.
She said she’s also keen to hang works by local artists in the studio’s waiting area; for the first year, she won’t charge a gallery commission on sales.
