A/T System Description &#; Hydraulic Controls

Honda Accordshifting mod automatic ! almost like it slips then grabs and goes

RESPONSE

May be low on fluid or has a sticking solenoid.

Hydraulic Controls

Valve Bodies

The valve body includes the main valve body, the regulator valve body, and the servo body. The ATF pump is driven by splines on the left end of the torque converter which is attached to the engine. Fluid flows through the regulator valve to maintain specified pressure through the main valve body to the manual valve, directing pressure to the shift valves and to each of the clutches via the solenoid valves. Shift solenoid valves A, B, C, D, and E are bolted on the servo body. A/T clutch pressure control solenoid valves A, B, and C are mounted on the outside of the transmission housing.

Solenoids Honda Accord

Main Valve Body

The main valve body contains the manual valve, shift valves and the relief valve, the lock-up control valve, the cooler check valve, the servo control valve, and the ATF pump gears. The primary function of the main valve body is to switch fluid pressure on and off and to control hydraulic pressure going to the hydraulic control system.

Regulator Valve Body

The regulator valve body contains the regulator valve, the torque converter check valve, lock-up shift valve, and the 1st and 3rd accumulators.

Servo Body

The servo body contains the servo valve, shift valve D, the accumulators for 2nd, 4th, and 5th, and shift solenoid valves for A, B, C, D, and E.

Transmission Solenoid Problems of Honda Accord - part 1

1 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 07/22/

At 90, car shook and was misfiring. Codes pulled were p and Spark plugs were replaced free of charge due to Honda service bulletin which extended the warranty to 8 years on engine misfires. My complaint is that the pistons and the piston rings were not inspected at that time. Why not? who knows what condition they were in? the car was returned to us with spark plugs as band-aids! it happened again at , miles (which we paid for) and now at , the dealership says we need a complete lower engine rebuild to replace pistons Of course as a , even though low miles, it's outside of warranty. I thought in buying an Accord, I could drive it for at least , at least! I would like the warranty further extended, or at least for american Honda corp to pay for half of the repairs as it's only 3, miles outside of the original service bulletin extended warranty of , If Honda acknowledged something was wrong with this particular v6 vtec engine, why does the warranty expire? shouldn't there be a grace period or a compromise? we are getting punished for caring for our car and having low miles on it. Many folks benefitted from the extended warranty because their cars failed within the 8 year time frame because they had high miles- higher than ours! what about those 08 Accords that are still failing outside of the 8 year mark that have lower miles than the ones Honda covered under warranty??? c'mon american Honda, take care of all your customers! I have purchased 6 Hondas in my lifetime and am a loyal customer at my local Honda service center with an extensive service history. On this car alone I've purchased new brakes, new starter, new alternator, drive train belts, water pump, new vtec spool valves, vtec solenoid, and every service as recommended by- at the dealership- and my Accord only lasted ,? how?.

2 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 09/01/

The contact owns a Honda Accord. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would not properly accelerate and experienced high revving when shifting from first to second gear. Also, the transmission would not shift above second gear. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the ab solenoid was faulty. The solenoid was replaced however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer matt castrucci Honda located at mall park dr, dayton, OH , who perform a software update to the automatic transmission module as per NHTSA campaign number: 11v (power train) however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was ,

3 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 04/15/

We driving on 35w -south at around 60 miles an hour and the vehicle turned itself to 1st gear. Had to pull over to shoulder and called aaa. Was told that solenoid to be replaced. After the replacement, car was ok and again, after few miles, has a similar incident on , where the gear shifted back to a lower gear at 60 miles an hour and missed a fully loaded walmart truck by inches! I had to spend $ to get the transmission fixed.

4 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 11/10/

Vehicle downshifted in low gear at highway speed almost causing a crash. Took to transmission shop and they said transmission needs replacement. Transmission shop hooked up to diagnostic and read the following codes: po a/t clutch pressure control solenoid valve a stuck on and po shift solenoid valve a stuck on . Transmission shop states this is a very common problem.

5 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 11/02/

This is my second Honda I owned and I have been dealing with my second Honda's transmission problem for a about 6 months now. I first noticed a slipping and a delay in speed when I started to drive it. At first I thought it was a fuel pump issue but then it started to slip more severely to the point I almost wrecked trying to make a left hand turn into oncoming traffic. I have several incidents where this car has almost caused an accident. I have taken it to a mechanic, check engine light was on. He said it was a shift solenoid, $ dollars later just for the part alone, no fix. The same slipping and jerking continued. I have looked for a good price for a transmission and it cost about $1,> to get a the transmission installed with labor. A price that I am not willing to pay. I feel Honda is responsible for this faulty car. So many of the same complaints is not a coinsidence its a fact. Honda get it together or you will lose many loyal customers!!.

6 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 08/01/

I was driving home from work in stop-and-go traffic. When I went to accelerate I noticed that the vehicle jerked, as if it had a problem shifting. I didn't think much of it at the time until it did it again after I came to another stop and accelerated once traffic started moving again. This time I pulled over to the side of the road. I then noticed the malfunction indicator lamp ("check engine light") came on the dash. The traction control (tcs) indicator also came on. I turned the car off, waited a few seconds, then started it again, hoping that would clear any faults. The indicators were still lit and when I went to put the vehicle in drive the drive "d" indicator was flashing green (it's normally solid green). I drove it a short distance to a nearby parking lot where I called a tow truck to come tow the vehicle to my local Honda dealership. Upon driving it to the parking lot I noticed that it wouldn't shift out of first gear. Top speed I got was about 40 mph. Also the engine was revving slightly. I then knew that the problem was more serious and I feared for the worse. While waiting for the tow truck I checked the error codes that was causing the check engine light to come on. It came back with three codes having to do with the shift solenoid valve a and clutch pressure control solenoid valve a being stuck on. The dealer called me back the next day and explained that they replaced the shift and clutch pressure control solenoids, were going to give it a test drive to see if that corrected the fault, and would call me back afterwards. The next call I received was devastating. I was told that it didn't fix the issue and that I would need a new transmission! I was completely shocked. The car just hit the 50, mile mark! I have babied this car since I first bought it new. I don't drive it rough and I follow the maintenance schedule to a t. How could this possibly be?.

7 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 06/15/

Honda Accord complete automatic transmission failure at 91, miles. Incident below resulted in near collision when my vehicle pulled out to merge into traffic and vehicle would not accelerate more than approximately 15 mph. Other vehicle had to slam on brakes to avoid side collision. I have a Honda Accord lx, 4- door, 4 cylinder, automatic transmission. At approximately 91, miles, I noticed that the automatic transmission started to "slip" shifting from first gear into second gear, especially right after the vehicle was just started. This issue would get worse under medium to heavy acceleration. Having had another Honda Accord lx, 2 door, automatic transmission, that failed at 66, miles, I suspected that the transmission was failing on this Honda Accord lx. The vehicle was taken to cottman transmission for evaluation, and the technician test drove the vehicle immediately after starting up the vehicle in the morning. The technician confirmed the severe "slippage" from first into second gear and ran diagnostic tests on all the electric components, including automatic transmission solenoids. Upon completion and additional examination of the problem, the technician stated that the automatic transmission was failing, and required a total rebuild. Once the Honda Accord automatic transmission was removed from the Honda Accord and taken apart, it was noted that the internal metal filter was plugged with metal savings, the clutch bands were burned, and an internal electric switch was defective. Expect no help and/or compensation from Honda corporation as pursing that route has been futile. It would seem that Honda corporation had been over confident in the sale of Hondas in the united states, that the "quality" of their product now suffers.

8 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 06/13/

On the date specified above up to the current date 11/14/ I [xxx]have had this Honda Accord ex for less than a year and I have had problems out of this car's take off speed. To further explain the car struggles to take off, and when it does and tries to shift, the shifting is either delayed, and or the vehicle shifts very rough. It is almost as thought the vehicle is leaping forward. There are even times when I try to take off after stopping in traffic, the car behaves as though it is in neutral when trying to shift from first gear to second gear. My engine light did not come on until later indicating that there was a malfunction somewhere. I pulled out my code reader and hooked it to the obd outlet on my car and it indicated, low torque shift solenoid circuit. I checked the internet to see if any other Honda owners had this same issue with their Honda Accords, and it appears that I am not alone with having the same symptoms. It also appears that Honda has had these problems with the craftsmanship of their transmissions on the Accords from year models However, so far from what I have researched on the web their has been no accidents or fires reported yet. I am urging the NHTSA or safercar. Gov to immediately investigate this issue. This is a safety issue that I believe needs to be addressed. Although my car is a model, their have been customers whom have had their vehicles have transmission failures with mileage as low as This type of mileage of miles for a transmission to fail is not normal. Especially if the vehicle has been very well maintained, with maintenance records to back it up to date. Anyway, please investigate before someone gets seriously hurt or even killed. I don't want anyone or Honda to suffer like firestone tires did a few years ago. Come on Honda, fix your product that you have been standing behind. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. (b)(6).

10 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 03/25/

My wife had parked in a parking space with a very slight downward slope. There was another space ahead of her. She had been driving in a heavy rain. The car was operating normally. When she returned about 15 minutes later, the brake pedal felt hard. She started the engine and shifted into reverse. The car started coasting forward. The brakes remained hard and didn't stop the car. She stopped it by shifting to park, then turned off the engine. She repeated the attempt to back out of the space - same result. No error messages appeared. She called, and I drove to the scene. The rain had stopped. I felt the hardness of the brake pedal, although it felt more like a stiff spring than a non-power brake pedal to me. I pumped the springy pedal a few times; it didn't change. I started the engine, keeping my foot lightly on the brake. When the engine started, the stiffness immediately disappeared, the pedal felt normal, the transmission worked, and the car drove normally. I didn't get to experience the transmission problem. Later, I could find no problem with the brakes. The linkage has only a very slight amount of play, as it should. I depleted the vacuum supply by pumping the brakes with the engine off. The pedal felt very hard, unlike the springy feel in the parking lot. I have a phd in electrical engineering and a lot of car repair experience. This background leads me to conclude that it is extremely unlikely for the unrelated braking and transmission systems to fail simultaneously, and then recover simultaneously. There has to be another common cause, which leads me to suspect the computer system or possibly a sensor, particularly because this happened after driving in a heavy rain. The postulated failure mode is a compromised computer system that could partially activate the abs system and also fail to operate the reverse solenoid valve in the transmission.

11 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 03/06/

At the approx miles stated above, my Honda Accord began to struggle shifting from first to second gear. It was as though the car was losing power. Also at times the car not only struggle to get into first gear but when it shifted it would shift rough, and the car would plunge or gallop forward. I researched several websites and blogs just to see if any one else had experienced this same problem. As it turns out everyone has experienced the problem on the Honda Accord models. So since this was not just me, I contacted Honda headquarters about this issue to see if they would be or had issued a recall on this vehicle regarding the transmission. They stated they had not, however, I feel they need to because this is a hazard, and a major problem. When the car struggles to get into first gear while trying to get into traffic, the car can lose power, which can possibly cause someone to loose control of the vehicle. And as a consequence an accident may occur, resulting in serious injury or death. I ask that the NHTSA please immediately look into this issue. I have read blogs and complaints all over the web regarding Honda and this problem with the Honda Accord transmission solenoid, dating back as far as Honda apparently has know about this problem, and has failed to be courteous about fixing it. Although my car is old, I still feel Honda should be held liable for a faulty part on the transmission. To continue where I left off with Honda, I have talked to them 4 different times and in different months regarding this issue, it seems they are not interested in correcting it, unless they are forced to do so. The lady over the phone did not even offer any type of compensation for the repair. So now it seems it is all up to me as the consumer. Nhtsa, again, please look into this immediately.

12 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 12/27/

Gear selector flashes, d4 over and over, sets check engine light with multiple codes related to transmission issue. Tested solenoids, replaced failed one, still having issue. Will not go into 4th. When it goes into 4th, id does not stay in 4th gear. Sometimes it will get to 3rd, but again doesn't stay. 2nd is the highest that works. Bucks and jerks violently, and is a pure danger to drive on the street. It has been parked and not driven since the transmission failed.

13 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 11/14/

Since July , my Honda Accord lx v6 experienced sluggish in the transmission. Sometime, suddenly, my car felt like someone slammed on the brakes causing me to jerking forward. It happened a few more times, then in September , I brought the car in the dealer for the transmission service. I told the dealer service advisor about the symptom, after the dealer flushed the transmission fluid, then told me that the car sometime sluggish, replaced the fluid will fixed this. The problem got worse, more noise, jerking when the car automatically shifting, in November , the traction control system engaged, and the engine check light were illuminated. The car was slow to move. Brought the car to the dealer again on 11/14/, the dealer told me that the car "needs linear shift solenoid and brake light switch, parts had to be ordered, and the car can be drive !!! I drove the car home, it was so bad that I had to let the car sit waiting for parts. On 11/29/, the dealer replaced the linear shift solenoid and the brake light switch, then told me that the problem was fixed. Got the car home, the next day , I only drove about 5 miles, the noise and all the symptoms came back. I had to brought the car back to the dealer again. This time, they consulted with the Honda company technical service. After several days, the dealer told me that Honda technical service determine that the power train (transmission) is causing the problem; I need a transmission replacement, and it cost $ Called Honda customer service to register a complain about Honda service. This definitely need a recall.

14 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 09/19/

Honda service manager said he was "almost killed on the highway" driving my car: first incident: 9/19/ (mon evening) car lurching irregularly at highway and town speeds; difficulty getting into gear and trouble reversing. Took it to dealer that night. 9/20/ (tues): dealer reported not being able to detect a problem. Nothing came up on diagnostics. No service light was on. Dealer asked to keep it one more day. 9/21/ (wed): dealer still unable to detect a problem, they drove it around but claimed nothing unusual. Service manager asked if he could drive it home. I ok'd. Employer annoyed. Second incident: that night the service manager, drove it home, because it wasn't acting up at the garage, and diagnostics showed nothing. There were no warning lights. He, [xxx], said he "almost went through the windshield on the highway" on his way home. He said repeatedly that he was almost killed. That's right the Honda service manager said he almost was killed!!! which is what could have happened to me or any other Honda Accord owner. If this happened in inclement weather, I'd be dead in a ditch (it's new england so those days are coming). The car lurched at highway speeds and at low speeds. It lurched speeding up and slowing down. If I put the car in neutral, and just applied some gas to the pedal, the tachometer (rpm) needle jumped around all over the place. Only until the service manager got it back to the service garage (9/22) did any service lights come on. How convenient. Their proposed solution: step one: replace transmission fluid (material, parts, labor) = $ step two: replace transmission solenoid (parts labor, etc) = $ failing that: step three: replace entire transmission. Est. Cost: $ total potential cost: approx $5. . . . Or my life. This is a significant safety issue and a recall is in order and ASAP. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. (b)(6).

15 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 03/28/

My hona Accord transmissions has began to slip on March 28, as I was making a delivery for my job traveling uphill ,I got a couple of readings from a mechanic which was codes p,p,&p it hasnt stopped and continues to slip as I drive at any speed & slips everytime I drive. I had a mechanic clean the solenoids and do a transmission fluid flush for $ 00,I also added lucas transmission slip stop and problem still occur. I got an estimate for repair for the transmission for $

The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was unknown. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was ,

17 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 02/12/

Was driving mph on a chicago expressway when the transmission started slipping and caused sudden deceleration. I was extremely frightened as the car started lurching, so I weathered it until I could get to a ramp. As it was a Saturday night, no dealers or shops were open, so I survived the lurching all the way home and had my husband refill the transmission fluid. We then got it into a shop Monday ASAP and got the news. . . Bad solenoid and the transmission was blown. Total cost to replace transmission = $3, at 97, miles. Fyi: previous checkup one month prior revealed no trans problems, except for battery replacement.

18 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 10/09/

Contamination of the linear solenoid and its associated passages inside the transmission will cause transmission failure.

19 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 10/02/

Honda Accord ex v6 model transmission failure. Car purchased end of Approximately 22k miles after purchase transmission failed and was replaced under warranty. Would not go into gear after warming up. Stop car and restart it would shift properly for a few minutes before slipping out of gear again. According to dealer problem caused by seal broken down clogging transmission filter. Today, k miles on car (90k on transmission), same exact problem happened again. This time while driving on I-4 in orlando. Nearly caused an accident as the car violently downshifted. Check engine light came on and my mechanic diagnosed the computer codes as solenoid problems. He cleared the errors and car drove fine again for a few minutes before beginning to lurch up and down gears again. Luckily this was in a more controlled environment. This is a terrible safety issue because it can happen at highway speeds and causes the car to lurch violently.

20 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 08/10/

I bought this car less then a month ago. After driving it for only 7 days it started downshifting on the freeway at 75mph and bucking almost out of my control. I called the dealership I bought the vehicle from and the told me to call the people I purchased the warranty from. I called them they told me to take to a shp of my choice. I did and the said it was the solenoid a that needed to be replaced (a electronic part) which is not covered under my warranty and to top that of they can not guaranty me the transmission will not need to be replaced. Which after having it back for a week the car started bucking again on the freeway while I was doing 50mph. . . . The repair cost me $ And now I have to come out of pocket again another $ This could be a very bad situation when the car starts downshifting on it's own on freeways. I see their are other complaints of the same nature. What are we waiting for to make this a recall for some to die.

The transmission on my '03 Accord v6 (97k miles) started to fail when driving home from work on 7/22/ I couldn't reverse and on a busy road I couldn't exceed a speed limit over mph. I took it to my mechanic that evening, who said the problem was due to the failure of the pressure sensor solenoid a. I had to wait 3 hours for the new part to be delivered, but when my mechanic replaced the part, the problem still preceded. So, I went back to my mechanic, who finally found out the problem was due to my transmission. Currently my family of 5 has only one car and are being forced to pay both for a rent car and a new transmission.

27 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 02/01/

I was told 2 years ago by a Honda dealership that a solenoid was defective in the transmission. Solenoid was replaced but problems did not go away completely. Transmission would shift, but hard and with great delay in 1st gear. I returned to 2 other dealerships but was told that the car did not have an issue. I will not travel with the car as I am afraid the transmission will fail when it gets hot as it did the 1st time when I was miles from home. I recently took the car to a local transmission shop whom I trust and was told this is a common occurrence with this make and model. I was also told that a recall was issued but I never was notified by mail or phone even though this is a 1 owner car.

After the repairs, the vehicle would operate normally in third and fourth gear. Four months later, the transmission is beginning to slip once again. We purchased this vehicle in from a Honda dealership's used car lot (under a seperated name that was closed down a few months after we bought our car). Within a month, the transmission began jerking and surging. Being a mechanic, I hooked it up to a machine and found out the transmission had a code displaying. Honda's spreadsheet stated that the problem was the "1 2 shift solenoid" or if this failed to repair the issue, "replace transmission". Come to find out it was a known issue, one that has caused accidents in the past, and that Honda has done very little about it to compensate customers. We had the car repaired at the shop that ralph shomp (the dealership) took all their cars to. It has worked for almost 3 years. We have only gotten 32, miles out of this car, and are now looking at another transmission repair/replacement. I am currently in the navy, I leave my family for long periods of time, this has been the worst car I have ever owned, and the company who should be responsible for selling us a lemon refuses to do anything about it. Neither the dealership or Honda wish to take any kind of responsibility for their poor customer service.

My Honda Accord ex doesn't shift out of first until it goes into limp mode (very hard shift). The d light then begins to blink and my check engine light comes on. If I am on a hill the car will roll backwards while in drive and my car isn't a standard. I do not feel safe if a car is behind me. I have had it looked at and all I have found was it may be a solenoid or just a faulty transmission. It happens every day. During the winter months it isn't as bad but it still occurs.

My transmission slips and jerks going into 1st and second gear. It also jerks when I come to a complete stop and jerks out of 1st gear. The car eventually wouldn't accel when I pressed on the gas and would only go 20 mph. I was driving my Honda Accord when there was jerking motion when the car would shift gears. The jerking motion also occurred when the car was shifted to reverse. I was instructed by a mechanic to call american Honda. After speaking with a customer service representative I was told to take the car to a local Honda dealership. The dealership performed a diagnostic test on the car and reported that the car needed a solenoid . After having replaced the solenoid the car still did not function properly and it was found that the car needed a new transmission. American Honda did pay for the transmission but I had to pay for the labor. Doing a diagnostic test on the car the dealer told me that the transmission had failed.

35 Transmission Solenoid problem of the Honda Accord

Failure Date: 11/03/

My car is a Honda Accord ex VIN# jhmcgc this car has had two major problems. My transmission failed to work and the gear would not shift when I try to take off. The first time my transmission failed I was on the freeway and my transmission would not change gears which made my car go extremely slow and I was almost rear ended (the car in back of me screeched to stop and just missed my car by pulling to the side of the road). I took it to san leandro Honda and they failed to fix it. They charged me $ 00 to tell me they researched the car and found nothing wrong. They tightened all of my wires and it should be just fine. After I received the car back it did it slightly once again about two months later and than stopped. I called san leandro Honda and they told me not to bring it in until it is doing it bad. Recently my car did it again. I was driving along and the car would not change gears and got stuck in (drive 4) and the light was blinking w/ also the check engine light on. Again I was almost rear ended with my baby in the back seat both times. I now took it back to san leandro Honda and they are now going to replace the lock up solenoid and see if that is the problems. I do not have to pay because I bought the warranty but I noticed and was told from the dealership that and Accords have had major problems on their transmissions. I would like you to please investigate Honda that they research why my transmission and I noticed many other transmissions are bad and put a recall on them so now car accidents are caused. Honda should have caught the default the first time I took it in instead of putting me at risk again. If the car does not shift there is something wrong.
