The 9 Best Area Rugs of 2021
The best overall area rug is the Bungalow Rose Samaniego Oriental Rug formerly called World Menagerie Wilkins Hand-Tufted Indoor Area Rug. It's a thick, soft, and durable option that will look beautiful in any space. We also love The Spruce Summer Quinn Area Rug (view at Wayfair), which is a sophisticated rug that’s resistant to both staining and fading, making it a great choice for high-traffic areas.
The pile height refers to how long the carpet fibers are. Typically, pile height for an area rug is described as low, medium, and high—though you’ll sometimes see it expressed in inches. Area rugs with a low pile or no pile (like flatwoven rugs or jute rugs) typically offer easier maintenance, since it’s harder for dirt, debris, and pet hair to hide between fibers. However, a medium or high pile area rug will give you a cushier, more luxurious feeling.
The type of fibers used to make an area rug will have a big impact on the durability, softness, and stain resistance of the rug. You may spot natural materials like cotton, jute, or wool (likely to be the most expensive). However, many synthetic fibers are being used to make area rugs, including polypropylene, nylon, and polyester. These fibers offer advantages in terms of durability and stain resistance and often are more cost-effective than some natural fibers.
Size and shape
One of the most important things to consider when shopping for an area rug is the size. If you go too small, the rug will seem out of proportion with the room and won’t suit its purpose. However, a rug that is too large can overwhelm the space—or may not fit at all. Also, remember that area rugs aren’t always rectangular. Oval, round, and square area rugs can make a nice addition to your room as well.
To start, area rugs should be vacuumed at least once a week. This will make it easier to clean your rug when it comes time because there will be less dirt and grime buried deep within the rug fibers. Area rugs should be deep cleaned at least twice a year and more often if it's in an area with heavy foot traffic.
If your area rug is stained, you'll want to spot clean it immediately. To spot clean, try using a solution of one teaspoon dishwashing liquid with two cups of warm water. When cleaning the entire rug, you can use carpet shampoo on most area rugs, but you'll want to check and see if you need to dilute it first before using. You can apply the shampoo to your rug with a sponge mop or soft-bristled brush and then rinse it thoroughly.

I’m so excited to be partnering with Wayfair on this collaboration because as you all know, I am a huge fan of the website and have recently used tons of their products to update my living & dining area, my bedroom, my bathroom and now my foyer. The Best Places to Buy Stylish, Affordable Rugs Online
One of the easiest ways to completely change a room is by switching out your rug. It adds color if you can’t paint the walls or spring for new furniture. It adds pattern if you don’t want to commit to wallpaper. And, if you live in a small space or an open-layout home, it helps create vignettes. But area rugs, and even rug runners, can get super pricey — especially if you have your eye on authentic vintage rugs. So, we’ve scoured the internet and rounded up the best sites to shop affordable rugs, from budget-friendly large area rugs to affordable vintage rugs to style dupes that just look vintage. Check out our go-to sites below for sourcing affordable rugs, and spruce up your space on a budget.
If you have kids or pets, you need a Ruggable rug. If a spill or an accident happens, just throw the whole thing in your washing machine like a bed comforter, even the 8'x10' sizes. Easy, peasy. And these magic carpets are surprisingly affordable, too. You can get an 8'x10' of this rug with the included cover for $399. You buy the rug with a Velcro-like grip pad that lays beneath the rug cover and holds it in place, adding a little extra cushion. Other than the stylish shag rugs Ruggable recently launched, the rugs are quite thin. If you're specifically looking for a high-pile, plush rug, Ruggable rugs might not be best for you.
If you have champagne taste, Wayfair is a great site to shop for home decor. You can snag rugs from fashion labels such as Nicole Miller, Ralph Lauren and more for a lot less than department stores. And Wayfair usually has the widest selection for en vogue trends. We are head over heels in love with this terrazzo area rug.
Don’t let the fancy name fool you. Most giant area rugs on Boutique Rugs are less than $550. The way the site is organized by style and color is super helpful when you’re shopping for a new rug, and the filters by design make it handy to compare styles. Unlike other sites, Boutique Rugs has a huge selection of mats and runners, and the styles are seriously sophisticated. It’s a great place to snag a Persian-style design for a kitchen mat, entryway or mudroom.
If you love the jute rugs in Crate & Barrel or Pottery Barn catalogs, you can score the same look for a lot less at Overstock. The discount site has so many natural fiber rugs, from camel-colored jute to flaxseed-colored sisal. These natural fiber rugs like this Safavieh one are also perfect for layering under antique runners to fake a larger area rug. It’s one of our favorite design hacks.
If you tend to gravitate to more neutrals, Rugs USA has a great selection of neutral area rugs that are anything but boring, from plush shag rugs to hand-tufted designs. We love this minimal, Moroccan-inspired zig-zag. It looks very similar to a bestseller over at West Elm.
If you want a one-of-a-kind rug, you can shop gorgeous vintage rugs from all over the world without sifting through dusty antique stores and estate sales on the direct-to-consumer site Revival Rugs. The antique rugs are more expensive than vintage-inspired new rugs you'll find at the other sites on this list, but they're all well priced and you can find several under $500. While finding just the right style and size for your space may be tricky with vintage rugs since usually, only one size is available, Revival Rugs also has a "Revival-made" line of new rugs that are inspired by traditional techniques, handwoven in India and available in multiple sizes.
If you love the look of vintage but want more size, color and shape options, you can achieve a similar look for a lot less with designs from eSale Rugs. They have an impressive selection of vintage-inspired rugs that really do look vintage, from Persian-inspired bohemian rugs to groovy-inspired designs. This chartreuse floral rug is giving us major 70s vibes.
Rugs Direct had tons of trendy, budget-friendly rugs, but the coolest product line is their collection of vinyl cloth. These trompe l'oeil designs mimic pricey tile and it’s gorgeous, from Portuguese azulejos to French bistro-inspired “tile.” The smaller mats and runners are perfect for kitchens, laundry rooms or mudrooms because they just wipe clean.
My current living room area rug is from Target and people are shocked when I tell them where it’s from. I’ve had it for a couple of years, and after everything from kid marker messes to coffee spills, it still looks brand new. Target does a really good job of partnering with designers to offer high style at a lower price point. The Opalhouse product line is always right on trend, and this leopard spot rug is absolutely swoon-worthy.
The funky apparel company has really doubled down on their homewares line in the last couple of years with tons of big-ticket items such as furniture and sofas. And they have a great selection of trendy area rugs at a reasonable price. We love this rainbow shag rug for a hip loft or studio. Plus, most of their rugs are machine-washable!
