Why You Shouldn't Buy Apple's Digital AV Adapter

Apple's Digital AV Adapter is one of the easiest ways to connect your iPhone or iPad to your HDTV. The adapter plugs into the Lightning connector, which is the port normally used to charge the tablet, and an HDMI cable can be plugged into the other side, allowing you to hook it up to your TV. The Digital AV Adapter also has a second Lightning adapter port, so you can continue charging your iPad while it's connected to your TV.

The adapter goes hand in hand with the iPad's display mirroring feature. Although many streaming apps such as Netflix and Hulu Plus support 1080p video output through the Digital AV Adapter, the iPad's display mirroring allows anything on the display to be mirrored on the television. This means you can use it with apps that don't support video output. But, is the Digital AV Adapter the best option?

Why Shouldn't You Buy the Digital AV Adapter?

There are two ways to sling your iPad's picture to your HDTV's screen. The first is Apple's Digital AV Adapter, and it does a good job of it. The second is AirPlay, and it does a better job.

AirPlay uses your WiFi network to send video to your television. This makes it a great wireless solution. You don't even need to be in the same room as your television. So long as you have a connection to your WiFi network, you can use AirPlay. This means no worrying about cables. It also means no getting off your couch if you want to switch shows or play the next episode of what you are watching.

Because there are no wires, you can still easily control the iPad. This is great if you are playing a game and want to see it on your big-screen TV.

But How Much Does AirPlay Cost?

The Digital AV Adapter is pretty affordable and is available from Apple's website or other retailers. To use AirPlay to connect your iPad to your TV, you also need Apple TV and HDMI cables, so that's adds to the cost, but the extra expense doesn't just buy you a wireless connection: It buys you Apple TV.

Apple TV comes with tons of apps, and some are the same ones you might want to stream from your iPad, including Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Crackle. So, in many cases, you won't even need to hook your iPad into your television, which frees it for other uses. Apple TV also gives you access to buying or renting movies and television through iTunes.

Apple TV also works with music and photos. There are actually a few different ways you can get it to stream your music. You can use AirPlay to stream it from your iPad or iPhone, or if you subscribe to iTunes Match, your music collection should stream from the internet. As an alternative to iTunes Match, you can also use Home Sharing to stream your music collection from your PC.

Your shared iCloud Photo Library will also be available on Apple TV. So it can work as a really cool screen saver.

And if you really like the idea of Apple TV, you can skip the cheaper version and buy the newest generation Apple TV. It's definitely more expensive, but it also has the same basic processing power as an iPad Air and access to a full-featured App Store.

When the Digital AV Adapter Is the Best Solution

In most cases, you get more bang for your buck going for the Apple TV solution over the Digital AV Adapter solution. But there's one key area where the Digital AV Adapter is definitely the superior solution: portability. Not only is it much smaller than Apple TV, it's also a lot easier to hook up to a television.

Both devices must be on the same WiFi network. At home, this isn't an issue, but if you need a solution for work, such as hooking your iPad up to display a presentation, it can be a burden.

If you need a very mobile solution, the Digital AV Adapter is still the way to go. It's also the most foolproof solution. It doesn't take any extra software detection to get working, so it will work 100% of the time.

What If My TV Doesn't Have an HDMI Port?

There are a few options for older TVs. First, you can buy a composite AV cable from Apple, but this cable uses the old 30-pin connector for the iPad. If you have a newer iPad with a Lightning port, you will need the 30-pin to the Lightning adapter as well.

That's obviously not the most eloquent solution. A better route is to go with a breakout box or cable adapter that converts the HDMI signal into component (the blue, red and green cables for video) or composite (the single yellow cable for video). You can find some options by searching Amazon for "HDMI composite" or "HDMI component." The upside to going with an adapter is that it can be used for more than just hooking the iPad to your TV. You could use it for anything that has HDMI out, such as a game console.

Stream on your TV using an HDMI cable

You can connect a supported device (computer, phone, or tablet) to your TV using an HDMI cable and watch HBO Max on a big screen.

What you need

Here's what you need to stream on your TV using an HDMI cable:

  • An HDMI 2.0+ cable and possibly an adapter if connecting a phone or tablet.
  • An HDTV that supports HDCP 2.1+
  • A phone, tablet, or computer with HDMI 2.0+ out capability.

To enjoy HD-quality video, the HDMI cable and TV must be HDCP 2.1+ compliant.

Connect an iPhone, iPad, or Mac

Use an Apple Lightning Digital AV Adapter to connect your iPhone or iPad to your TV, or an Apple USB-C Digital AV Adapter to connect your Mac or iPad Pro with a USB-C port to your TV. To connect wirelessly, use AirPlay.

To stream on your TV

  1. Connect your phone, tablet, or computer to your TV using an HDMI cable.
  2. Open HBO Max on your phone, tablet, or computer and start watching something. Audio and video should play on your TV.

If audio and video from your device doesn't play on your TV, try the following:

  • Disconnect both ends of your cable and reconnect the cable to your device and TV.
  • If you're using an adapter, make sure it's securely connected to your HDMI cable.
  • Try connecting the HDMI cable to another HDMI port on your TV.
  • Make sure your TV is set to the correct HDMI source.
  • If video plays without sound, you might need to change the audio source on your TV or audio receiver.
  • Make sure you have the latest version of iOS or Android on your phone or tablet.

About Apple Digital AV Adapters for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

You can use a Digital AV or VGA adapter to connect your iOS device to a display, like a TV, projector, or computer monitor.

Find out which adapter you need

To mirror content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on a secondary display, you need the correct adapter. To connect wirelessly, use AirPlay.

For iOS devices with Lightning connectors

For iOS devices with 30-pin Dock connectors

Get connected

Connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a display:

  1. Plug your Digital AV or VGA adapter into the charging port on the bottom of your iOS device.
  2. Connect an HDMI or VGA cable to your adapter.
  3. Connect the other end of your HDMI or VGA cable to your secondary display (TV, monitor, or projector).
  4. Turn on your secondary display.
  5. If necessary, switch to the correct video source on your secondary display. If you need help, use your display's manual.

Now the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch should appear2 on your TV, display, or projector.

Charge your iOS device while it's connected to a display

Most adapters have an extra Lightning connector or 30-pin Dock connector, so you can charge your iOS device while connected to a secondary display. Just connect a Lightning to USB or Dock Connector to USB to the adapter. Then plug the USB connector into a power source.

Get help

Find out what to do when you have the following issues.

If you see video but can't hear audio

Make sure that you're using a Digital AV adapter (which has an HDMI port). If you're using a VGA adapter, it doesn't carry audio signals. To hear audio with a VGA adapter, you need to connect to the headset jack on your TV, monitor, projector, or stereo.

If an app doesn't display video or play audio

The app might not be compatible with your adapter. Check compatibility on the app's info page in the App Store or contact the developer.

If an alert says that an HDCP-compatible device is required

Your content might not be compatible with your adapter. Movies, TV shows, and certain streaming video apps require High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP). If you try to play these movies, shows, and streaming videos using a non-HDCP digital connection—like the Apple VGA Adapter—an alert will ask for an HDCP-compatible device.

If you need help with other issues

  1. Disconnect and reconnect your adapter from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch and from your TV, monitor, or projector.
  2. Make sure that your VGA or HDMI cable works, since the issue could be with the cable.
  3. Remove any VGA or HDMI extension cables or converters. Accessories that convert a VGA or HDMI signals to different video formats (DVI, Composite, Component) aren't compatible.
  4. Make sure that you have the latest version of iOS.

For more help, contact Apple Support, to set up service for your:

1.  To find your accessory's model number, connect it to your iOS device and go to Settings > General > About > Apple HDMI Adapter.

2.  The iPhone 4, iPad (1st generation), and iPod touch (4th generation) only display videos, photos, presentations, and slideshows on a secondary display. You can't mirror the entire screen.
