Get Out on the Water with Captain Mike’s Dolphin Tours
A short drive from Savannah’s a stunning coastal landscape emerges and welcomes visitors to Savannah’s Beach known as, Tybee Island.
Tybee Island is home for Michael and Iris Scarbrough, a couple who have been showcasing the island’s many playful dolphins off the bow of their signature yellow boats for 26 years. The winner of numerous TripAdvisor Certificates of Excellence and a featured attraction in national media outlets, including Good Morning America, the Today Show, the Discovery Channel and Southern Living, Captain Mike’s Dolphin Tours is a favorite among visitors and locals.
“We’ve been in the dolphin tour business for many years,” owner Iris Scarbrough said. “We offer informative, narrated tours, and have a wonderful crew working on the boats.”
Guests are taken on an unforgettable water adventure featuring boat-side greetings from bottlenose dolphins and sea turtles. You’ll see views of the Cockspur Island Lighthouse, the iconic Tybee Lighthouse, Fort Pulaski and much more.
“We have excellent tour guides, and our boats are all U.S. Coast Guard-certified,” said Scarbrough.
“We can take groups of up to 142 people out on the water in multiple boats.” Captain Mike’s offers a 99% guarantee that guests will see dolphins on the 75-minute tour. Most agree that the tour is a fun, educational experience that serves as the highlight of their vacation. Scarbrough reports that summer is the best time to see dolphins, due to the influx of shrimp in local waters.
“The dolphins were great; however, the crew made the trip,” said April Russel following a recent tour. “We will be sharing our pictures and memories for years to come.”
Tybee Island residents proudly bring their guests on Captain Mike’s Dolphin Tours. Nancy Lampe Futral, a resident of Tybee Island, said, “Whenever I have visitors to the island, it is always a treat—for me as well as them—to take them on Captain Mike’s Dolphin Tour.”
In addition to dolphin tours, Captain Mike’s also offers Instagram-worthy sunset cruises.
Guests with an appetite for adventure can also enjoy a four-hour offshore fishing excursion to reel in sheepshead and black sea bass or a 10-hour charter to catch grouper and snapper.

Sunset Dolphin Tour
What to expect:
You'll meet Captain Solomon at The Crab Shack restaurant on Tybee Island. There will be a quick safety brief before setting sail from the dock. You'll wind through the marshlands, creeks and rivers in search of the local resident dolphins.
The dolphins in the area are used to people coming out to pay them a visit so they usually stay in the area long enough to watch them dive, splash and play. Depending on the time of year, you may even see a few babies swimming with the pod.
The Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphin is the most common dolphin around the area. Did you know that when they sleep, they shut down one half of their brain so they can stay alive?! One side does the breathing while the other half makes sure everything is still working. Fascinating!
You are welcome to bring dinner and beverages with you on the trip. Don't forget your camera! You'll catch one of the most beautiful sunsets you've ever seen.

Your Choice of 3 Dolphin & Nature Tours
Once onboard our dolphin tour, we will get under way in Broad Creek and watch for the Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins. They live in Broad Creek year round so we see them at the dock every day, sometimes before we leave for the cruise. We encourage the passengers to keep a sharp watch for them as dolphins can hold their breath for as long as 5 minutes.
Once we find them, we cruise with them for as long as the passengers require to capture photos, ask questions, and to encounter the dolphins. Next, we will continue down Broad Creek toward Calibogue Sound. You will see beautiful homes in Long Cove, Wexford (Lock System) and Spanish Wells Plantations. This is one of the highlights of the trip. These are famous gated communities that make Hilton Head what it is today.
Normally we will arrive in Calibogue Sound about half way through the trip. There we will see the Harbour Town Lighthouse, Daufuskie Island, the Atlantic Ocean, and on a clear day, Tybee Island and the Savannah River bridge (8 miles). Our experienced captains narrate these trips.
