Conan skyrim

Conan skyrim DEFAULT
I recently was encouraged to pick up Skyrim again and install a massive load of mods to enhance the experience (Requiem, Epic Overhaul, Immersive Potions and so on.....). Anyway, I decided to do a Conan Roleplay (based on Howard's orginal books, not Arnold's movies). I've also been playing '1 life' as Conan. It's been so much fun I decided to post about it.

The backstory: Alduin is destined to devour the world....so Talos transports a champion (a middle aged Conan) from another realm. Conan is a near perfect warrior and an experienced thief (as per the books). More importantly, since Conan isn't a part of Mundus, that means he isn't bound to Mundus's destiny. This means that Conan alone can defeat Alduin and stave off the end of the world.

*I'm letting Conan learn how to use Thu'um considering he is effectively Talos' champion here.

Roleplay Rules (using Requiem):

1-He sees the Thalmor as a enemy. Will not do any missions for them. Will kill them when feasible!

2-As Talos' champion + pissed at General Tulius + Nords are much like his own people = Conan will side with the Stormcloaks.

3-Since he has no destiny in Mundus (the whole not part of Mundus thing I mentioned earlier), he can't ever use a Destiny Stone.

4-Will not pickup/use soulgems or scrolls, or magical items/equipment or artifacts. Conan would never have anything to do with daedric lords or souls and enchantments. He wouldn't even touch these things.

*Potions are perfectly fine with Conan (just natural stuff concentrated and bottled). You might have to use them often lol! Use Immersive Potions for extra realism!

5-No spells of any type...Conan, nuff said.

6-No Vampire/Werewolf...drinking blood and eating people wtf!?! Conan, nuff said.

7-No crafting of any type....actually more fun this way. Enchanting is out because of the rule above, Alchemy's Mutagen perks would never be used by Conan (and you can buy potions anyway) and Smithing is too OP (not to mention completely senseless) for a Roleplay playthrough.

8-(Optional) Conan comes experienced already = use 'player.advskill' command to advance all combat skills + lightarmor, sneak, speechcraft, pickpocket, and lockpick to 100. Then distribute your perks accordingly throughout these trees.

9-Conan uses hide based and iron/steel/silver based armor/weapons, never elven (Orcs count as elven) or daedric...I'm not sure if he would ever use Ebony/Nordic/Dragon weapons and armor.

Note: Conan uses heavy armor far more often than light armor (remember, this is based on the books). Standard garb for Conan (in the books) tends to be a chain shirt, boots and steel helmet. However, he will use even heavier armor and shields if he thinks battle is imminent...he even sometimes uses plate armor in the books. Most of the time though, he prefers a 'medium' weighted kit such as a chain shirt (Stormcloak Requiem armor), a white fur steel helmet, white fur nordic boots/bracers + a Steel shield.

As for weapons, he's used pretty much everything in the books. However, he seems to prefer broadswords (so swords and longswords) most of the time.

Conan Exiles aims for "the line between Skyrim and Minecraft", genital slider about "equality and all that"

Conan Exiles doesn't want to be a crafting survival clone, but to present a unique world influenced by its source material.

conan_exiles-2

Conan Exiles developer Funcom participated in a Reddit AMA over the weekend to answer burning questions about the Early Access title everyone was talking about last week.

Naturally, the top question was about the game's nudity and male genital sliders, which has resulted in some hilarious Conan Exiles GIFs of ballsacks flapping about.

"We discussed nudity early on and decided that for the lore and setting, nudity was something we wanted to go with," Funcom said.

"The slider was a natural evolution of that, especially seeing we had a similar slider for breasts. Equality and all that."

But Conan Exiles isn't supposed to be just that game famous for people running around without their underoos. Funcom said its vision for the game is to "find the line between Skyrim and Minecraft".

We want to have a game where NPCs inhabit a living, breathing world, but where players make a real impact on the environment and become a part of that world."

"We want to have a game where NPCs inhabit a living, breathing world, but where players make a real impact on the environment and become a part of that world. Through the thrall system we hope to introduce complex behaviours that allow you to build your own cities and towns and as we add features such as the Purge, we are going to be trying to create a dynamic world that challenges your right to survive."

Asked for more details, Funcom said it wants NPCs to follow schedules and to remember their relationships to players. This includes thralls, who will be able to be employed as mercenaries if rescued, rather than enslaved, if you prefer.

As for what makes Conan Exiles stand out from other survival crafting sandboxes like Ark: Survival Evolved, Rust and DayZ, Funcom said "close quarters melee, sorcery, fatalities, lore, thralls, religion and avatars etc".

"Plus the Conan world is an interesting place, above and beyond just being a random map," the spokesperson added.

Here are a few things Funcom assured Conan Exiles players would be improved or implemented during Early Access:

  • A decay system so players can't claim huge swathes of land, locking others out forever.
  • A magic system including sorcery and necromancy, tied to a corruption system, which "will not be anything like Skyrim".
  • More bosses, new biomes, and improvements to combat.
  • More specifically, improvements to dodge and combat controls.
  • Ability to capture and sacrifice players, possibly even taking body parts such as heads or genitals as trophies.
  • A better chat system with features like chat bubbles.
  • More clan features such as dye customisation and better permissions.
  • Traps, and improvements to bows.
  • More roleplaying support and an expansion to the world, while staying faithful to the Conan material.

There were a couple of questions about Conan Exiles migrating to new servers after the original platform couldn't handle demand. Funcom said all player progress will be retained in the move, and reiterated that demand surprised it.

"We didn't expect the demand we have received. Can't comment on specific numbers due to public company rules etc," Funcom said.

"We stress tested the game with 70 plus people on external (not our own) hardware multiple times. We never dropped below 10 server frames which we deemed acceptable performance for a full load server. We did not see the issues that the official servers were seeing.

"We have, however, launched multiplayer games before so we know that when you go to scale, things can go wrong. See Diablo 3 for an example of a very well prepared company that still got caught unawares by demand. That was also a part of our decision to do early access, so we can have a more understanding audience who will work with us to improve any issues we have."

There's plenty more about Conan Exiles in the full Q&A, so hit the source link above for all the details.

The house of Clan Gray-Mane contains an interesting book, talking about the 'secret of steel', the fulgurite (made from a rare ore), which properties are very interesting to create powerful weapons; in Skyrim, only the Whiterun Skyforge being able to craft items from fulgurite. The book also refers to the Hyborian Mound, a mound in the moor West of Whiterun, which contains a sword crafted in this alloy and which power is said to be similar to Daedric weapons'. Inside the mound, the Dragonborn encounters the ghost of Conan, who explains he was cursed by Thulsa Doom and seeks to be fred.

Conan Hyborian Age Provides Examples Of:

The Hyborian Age

  • Absolute Cleavage: The Hyborian Armor and Pitfight Cuirass when worn by a female character (cf. Sideboob).
  • An Axe to Grind: Rexor's iconic three-headed axe. Also, the axe wielded by Conan during the battle of the Mounds scene can be found lying in the dungeon.
  • Blackout Basement: Contrary to Skyrim usual Hollywood Darkness in underground areas, most of the Hyborian Mound is filled with complete darkness, the only exceptions being either rare rooms with lit candles or braziers, or rare instances of rooms with holes in the ceiling. The mod's description even explicitely advices to bring torches.
  • Bonus Dungeon: The core of the mod consists in exploring one.
  • Cool, but Inefficient: The iconic Conan outfit (loincloth, fur boots, leather bracers, a leather circlet, and the amulet) is available in the mod, but it offers so little protection that it turns the Dragonborn into a Glass Cannon (unless you fully mastered and researched the Light Armor and Smithing skills).
  • Advertisement:

  • Crossover: The mod basically uses the Conan the Barbarian setting as a distant past of the Tamriel setting, with a few alterations to the former in order to fit the Elder Scrolls lore (like Crom being renamed 'Shor', or the Atlantean Sword being renamed 'Atmorean Sword'). The Hyborian Mound itself is a combination of the mound in which Conan finds his sword, Thulsa Doom's lair, and the gladiatorial arena from the beginning of the movie.
  • Cut-and-Paste Environments: Some parts of the dungeon are copies of areas from the unmodded game.
    • Doom's room is a copy (with much more skeletons, less light, and a double-snake statue added) of the vanilla room where you encounter Red Eagle.
    • The pitfigh arena is a copy of the room where you fight Potema's 'council' during 'The Wolf Queen Awakened'.
  • Dem Bones: Aside a dragon priest ( Thulsa Doom) and two trolls, the enemies encountered are only skeletons and Draugr.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: You thought the bossfight against Thorgrim, Rexor, and Thulsa Doom was the end of the dungeon, did you? It isn't, and there's still one full level after this (including its own bossfight.
  • Dismantled MacGuffin: One of the ways to end the quest is finding parts of broken swords, then reforging one of them.
  • Drop the Hammer: Thorgrim fights with his wooden warhammer.
  • Dual Boss:
    • Thorgrim and Rexor are fought this way, with Conan supporting the player character. Since Thulsa Doom's sarcophagus is right behind their thrones, moving to far toward the end of the room during the fight can spawn him as well, making the bossfight even more difficult.
    • The two trolls guarding the exit of the Hyborian Mound.
  • Dungeon Crawling: The premise is basically the exploration of a dungeon to find ancient weapons, while fighting the monsters inside.
  • Durable Deathtrap/Ragnarök Proofing: In the very old Hyborian Mound, not only the traps are still ready to be triggered and work perfectly, but some candles and braziers are still lit.
  • Elaborate Equals Effective: The Atmorean and Cimmerian sword/greatsword, which are better than any unenchanted weapons of thoses classes from the unmodded game, have very detailed pommel and hilt, as well as a blade engraved with runes. The Atmorean sabre/greatsabre are similar, though less detailed (no runes).
  • Flunky Boss:
    • Thulsa Doom in Doom's room, with a dozen of skeletons.
    • The Pitfighter bossfight involves a dozen of skeleton mooks, as well as a few (weaker) draugr with the same boss name.
  • Guide Dang It!: To complete the 'Riddle of Steel' quest, you need to reforge one of the swords. While the quest marker leads to the Skyforge, the objective actually requires to talk to Eorlund Grey-Mane, who may be anywhere in the town. The only clue on the mod's page is 'to reforge weapons you need skysteel forging ability and arcane smithing', which further implies that finishing the quest requires to reforge the sword yourself.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Conan fights with a greatsword.
  • Homage: Conan Hyborian Age is basically one giant homage to the 1982 movie.
    • The quest is titled 'Riddle of Steel'. The Secret of Steel (the book which grants the quest) is Conan father's monologue from the beginning of the movie (with some names changed to fit the Elder Scrolls lore).
    • All the new weapons and pieces of armour appear in the movie.
    • The bosses are characters of the movie.
    • One of the new characters is a fully voiced Conan with a Germanic accent.
    • There are new Conan the Barbarian-flavoured loading screens.
  • Happy Ending Override: The mod provides one to the movie. Conan explains that he may have killed Thulsa Doom, but the dying wizard cursed him and he gradually became weaker and weaker each day until he eventually was unable to wake up.
  • Infinity +1 Sword: The weapons that can be crafted after completing the quest are more powerful (and lighter) than their daedric equivalent, and can be created way earlier, though tempering them require an even rarer resource.
  • Interface Spoiler: Checking the map when standing near the entrance of the second level shows an area transition in the middle of a corridor. After the bossfight against Thulsa Doom, when you backtrack through the whole level, the floor collapses there and the pit which appeared under your feet contains a transition to another level.
  • Lady Not-Appearing-in-This-Game: Despite appearing scantily-clad (she wears the Pitfight Cuirass, cf. Sideboob) in one of the loading screens (said loading screen being of the pictures illustrating the mod in the Skyrim Nexus), Valeria doesn't appear in the game.
  • Loading Screen: The mod adds a few custom loading screens to the native ones. They follow the Skyrim style of 'lore-related quote + 3D picture of a character/object', with quotes from the movie illustrated by 3D artworks of Conan, Valeria, or various new items.
  • Loincloth: The iconic Conan-like loincloth is one of the items acquired in the dungeon. It's actually more protective than the lowest-level light armors.
  • Lost Technology: Fulgurite. The Gray-Manes are researching it, with little success: aside from the quest-giving book, their house contains a letter stating that a boat carrying the fulgurite freight they ordered sank in area off of Dawnstar's coast.
  • Never Trust a Trailer: The official trailer and screenshots from the Skyrim Nexus feature a protagonist which is a look-alike of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Conan, implying that the mod's player character is canonically supposed to be Conan himself. It's actually not the case, because Conan appears as a (ghost) NPC. note
  • Post-Final Boss: After defeating four very powerful bosses, the final room in the Hyborian Mound consists in fighting against two (regular) trolls guarding the dungeon's exit.
  • Reality Ensues:
    • At last, a Skyrim dungeon which averts Hollywood Darkness!
    • The Pitfight Circlet is technically a light armor piece of headgear instead of an unarmored circlet, but it offers ridiculously low protection, which makes sense, since it only consists in a thin band of studded leather.
  • Sequence Breaking: After the bossfight in Doom's room in the second level, the Dragonborn must backtrack to the dungeon's first level, in which the exit gate is now open (unless the player missed the lever in the boss room). On the way, the floor collapses under the player character's feet when walking in a corridor, sending the Dragonborn down in a chasm to the third level of the dungeon. With fast enough reflexes, it's possible to get back when the floor starts collapsing, then to jump above the hole, allowing to completely skip the third level.
  • Shout-Out: A character mentioned in the mod but not encountered is a smith named Mordec of Duthil, after a character from Conan of Venarium, a Conan novel written by Harry Turtledove.note
  • Sideboob:
    • When worn by a male character, the Hyborian Armor looks like Conan's classical loincloth, and Pitfight Cuirass is a leather breach with leather suspenders from the belt to the shoulders. When worn by a female character, the former adds a kind of leather apron on the chest (which only covers the front of the body, not the side), and the latter replaces the suspenders by two thick strips of leather which covers the breasts while reveal the cleavage down to the stomach, and leaving the side of the breasts exposed.
    • The Fur Pitfighter armor is identical for both genders: its top consists in fur covering the chest-belly and the back, leaving the sides of the ribs exposed.
  • Unwinnable by Mistake: Has Eorlund been killed by a dragon attack or a vampire raid? Well, unless you resurrect him with the console, you're now unable to reforge the sword and complete the quest.
  • Wheel of Pain: As another homage to the movie, one of them shows up near the end of the dungeon. You must push it to open a door past the pitfight arena.
  • Wrecked Weapon: The 'Cimmerian Sword Broken' is a broken weapon (technically a dagger) in the mound. It's made from the sword's handle and the lower part of its blade. The upper half of the blade of another sword (the Atmorean Sword) is found lying elsewhere in the dungeon. The quest ends when a single one of those swords is reforged at the Skyforge, either as a one-handed sword or as a greatsword.

Latest Reviews

I’ll never forget wandering the plains of Skyrim with my best friend. Each of us would play from our own living rooms separated by sprawling states yet connected through the power of internet and Xbox Live. We talked about our character’s skill tree wish list, random happenings we came across and among other things our own personal lives. It hearkened back to days when we used to play Oblivion side by side on a piecemeal PC while taking turns weaving our heroes’ tales. We were more than satisfied at the time, but just like many other aspiring bards and dragon-slayers, we wondered what our fantasy epic would look like if we could stand side by side in-game? I recoil a bit when drawing a comparison to one of the best games of all time, but that’s the kind of experience Conan: Exiles will inspire in your imagination.

The game opens up with your character left to die crucifixion style as you’ve been sentenced to suffer in the Exiled Lands. The world of Conan is still new to me but it features deserts, tropical islands and towering mountains. There’s also derelict ruins of an ancient civilization strewn about that do a great deal at establishing an actual narrative which is a welcome addition as many survival games lean far too nuanced. More about that later, but fate intervenes and your character is set free for a second chance. What happens next will be completely up to you.

The Exiled lands may not look like much at first but you’ll soon discover that nearly everything can be an asset with the right recipe. Conan: Exiles is mainly a survival game so you can expect crafting to take up much of your time. Start by grabbing a loose branch and some stone to make a pickaxe. Use that as a weapon until your crafting reaches a new level and you’re able to make a sword. Most of this will be familiar to fans of similar games in the genre.

You can choose to play the game by yourself or with other people in PVP and non-PVP servers. These break down even further in classification for role-players and non role-players alike. I wasn’t alone when wanting to play alongside a friend in Skyrim yet Elder Scrolls Online wasn’t quite what folks were looking for when they dreamed up that possibility. I wasn’t able to play with anyone else beyond the few Exiles I saw roaming in the distance but I can’t wait to eventually build up a clan and siege another player’s castle

Conan: Exiles begins impressing as you acquire the necessary items to begin crafting a base. The building system gives the most freedom of any survival game you’d compare it to. First off on the features list is the ability to build practically anywhere. The Exiled Lands is home to some intimidating rocky mountains and cliff sides but in Conan: Exiles these are more opportunities than deterrents. All player creations will share textures depending on what you’re building with but you won’t be limited to only choosing a flat piece of land. Venture deep enough in the Exiled Lands and you’ll find player-made castle structures built directly into mountainsides. I chose to build my villa on an island and some of it even extended onto the water.

After amassing a precursor castle you’ll need to start utilizing other barbarians so that you can continue exploring while they build from base. You’ll raid camps and attempt to knock out Exiled Barbarians. If you manage to avoid killing them you’ll be able to drag them with a rope all the way back to your base and make them your slaves. You can then assign them tasks such as armor crafting and leather working, but first you must subjugate their minds using an item called the Wheel of Pain. Force them to continually push this lever in circles until they lose the will to live and only exist to serve.

Once your captives finally become servants they are called Thralls. The Thrall system extends beyond just passive crafters and becomes important to what may eventually become the meta game in Conan: Exiles. Hidden in far off places such as dungeons or major cities will be rare NPCs with special traits that are basically best in slot for the duties you assign them.

You can tell that Conan: Exiles cares deeply about the story and lore surrounding the game and that appears to be one of the most appealing differences between many other survival simulators. Each item you pick up has a lore entry for you to read and hints at the greater mysteries swirling about in the world. There’s also hidden dungeons that lead to demonic statues whispering the dangers of staying too long and your mind becoming corrupted. There’s even notes left by dead exiles that read like warnings and riddles. This isn’t too surprising as the Conan IP has numerous fiction to draw from in the form of movies, books and graphic novels.

Combat is a huge part of the game, but it lacks the weight and feedback we’ve come to expect from first-person shooters at this time in early access. It’s difficult to gauge when an enemy is too strong to take on, but it’s kind of charming not knowing where the danger lies. Still, it’s rewarding to see your character go from literally just a loincloth to crafting your own armor and weapons. Going forward it’s expected that the combat will feel tight and responsive as the development team has set out to make the best fighting system of any open world survival game. Time will tell and we will look forward to regularly checking back in in the coming months.

Conan: Exiles is still in early access with plans to stay that way for the next year or less. The list of features the development team plans to add to the game is exhaustive and exciting for any fan of the open world survival genre. It’s impossible to say where this game will land, but judging from the community on Twitch and the experiences I’ve had, it’s clear that Conan: Exiles is off to a great start. Grab a friend and conquer the Exiled Lands before they conquer you.

  • Game-Breaking Bug: The lever in Doom's room is supposed to open the gate to the exit of the Hyborian mound but it sometimes doesn't work, leaving you trapped forever unless you use cheats to bypass it.
  • Gameplay and Story Integration: The Pitfight Circlet is technically a light armor piece of headgear instead of an unarmored circlet, but it offers ridiculously low protection, which makes sense, since it only consists in a thin band of studded leather.
  • Guide Dang It!: To complete the "Riddle of Steel" quest, you need to reforge one of the swords. While the quest marker leads to the Skyforge, the objective actually requires to talk to Eorlund Grey-Mane, who may be anywhere in the town. The only clue on the mod's page is "to reforge weapons you need skysteel forging ability and arcane smithing", which further implies that finishing the quest requires to reforge the sword yourself.
  • Heroes Prefer Swords: Conan fights with a greatsword.
  • Homage: Conan Hyborian Age is basically one giant homage to the 1982 movie.
    • The quest is titled "Riddle of Steel".
They follow the Skyrim style of "lore-related quote + 3D picture of a character/object", with quotes from the movie illustrated by 3D artworks of Conan, Valeria, or various new items.
  • Never Trust a Trailer:
    • The official trailer and screenshots from the Skyrim Nexus feature a protagonist which is a look-alike of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Conan, implying that the mod's player character is canonically supposed to be Conan himself. It's actually not the case, because Conan appears as a (ghost) NPC. note The mod Nexus page also provides a link to another mod by the same creator, which allows to create your perfect Schwarzy/Conan look-alike, while adding an alternate version of Conan's outfit which can be found out of the Hyborian Mound
    • One of the screenshots of the mod's page on the Nexus features a character with a loincloth, leather bracers, fur boots, and a horned helmet. All of those armor pieces are functional items appearing in the mod, but this specific outfit is actually non-optimal ingame, because it mixes light and heavy armor.
  • Post-Final Boss: After defeating four very powerful bosses, the final room in the Hyborian Mound consists in fighting against two (regular) trolls guarding the dungeon's exit.
  • Shout-Out: A character mentioned in the mod but not encountered is a smith named Mordec of Duthil, after a character from Conan of Venarium, a Conan novel written by Harry Turtledove.note The original Mordec of Duthil is Conan's father in the novel; since the mod's Conan is supposed to be long dead while this version of Mordec sent letters to Eorlund Gray-Mane, they're probably not supposed to be the same person.
  • Unintentionally Unwinnable:
    • Has Eorlund been killed by a dragon attack or a vampire raid? Well, unless you resurrect him with the console, you're now unable to reforge the sword and complete the quest.
    • The room where the bossfight against Thulsa Doom, Rexor, and Thorgrim happens opens with a single pressure plate right before the entrance, in a narrow corridor. Said pressure plate also closes the door if you step on it while the door is already open, and there's no way to open it from inside the room. The plate is close enough from the door to allow to enter the room while it starts closing. It's possible to step on the plate to open the door, change your mind to go back exploring the dungeon, then go back to the already open room, and trap yourself in it because you step again on the pressure plate.
    • The rusted weapons you need to find to complete the quest of reforging them aren't hard to identify (you only need one of them out of three, the first one you pick up advances the quest diary, and two of them are lying in noticeable places where you must go to procede, making them impossible to miss), but they aren't technically considered as quest items, so you can drop them in unreachable places, store them in respawnable containers, sell them...
  • Wheel of Pain: As another homage to the movie, one of them shows up near the end of the dungeon. You must push it to open a door past the pitfight arena.
  • Wrecked Weapon: The "Cimmerian Sword Broken" is a broken weapon (technically a dagger) in the mound.
