Thread: SBN 44 (GP1200) Carburetor Fuel Pump Diagram--Help needed

There usually is no need for gasket on these carbs.

Ive had that issue before and it ended up being the part labelled 6A (non round oring).
The channels get crudded up with fuel and oil residue, you have to brush thurroughly with a brass brush or a toothbrush, that o-ring will get pinched by some crud and not seal correctly.

To find any leaks I always recomend the newspaper or christmas technique.
Put clean sheets of newspaper flatly on the surfaces (I hold them with some transparent tape).
Blip the starter or run for short bursts, inspect, rinse and repeat until blotches apppear on newspaper.

I would try and narrow down which carb is leaking, and maybe inspect the gaskets you removed for differences with the new ones which I assume were not original mikuni.

If you are considering gasketing material you will need something that is fuel and oil resistant (threebond 1201 comes highly recomended have a tube but never used it yet).

ok i got an SBN 44 now what?

got a new used Mikuni Super BN carb for my 87 550 I know the jetting is wrong but the mad scientist is going to hook me up with some jets and i know that i need to get a primer kit so my questions are.

Do I need the spacer off the bottom of my old bn carb?

How should i plug up the holes where the choke butterfly use to be?

How do i hook up the fuel and vacum lines?

If you are looking at the side of the carb where the diaphram is there is two tuneing nombs one in the top left side and one in the bottom right which one is which and why are the other ones pluged up? I know the carb did not come off a 550 so will i have to get another needle adjustment thing and how do I put it in if i have to do that?

you may need a spacer off the manifold to clear distance from the cylinder ..

Re: ok i got an SBN 44 now what?

That's right, the SBN has the fuel pump on the engine side and it hits the head without spacing the intake manifold out about 1/2 inch. Need either a spacer or an aftermarket manifold that is already a little bigger.

The plastic spacer from your old set up under the carb was intended as a heat shield...to keep the engine heat from heating up the carb too much. You really do not need it but can use it if desired. Make sure to use new gaskets on both sides.

On of the butterfly holes can be "plugged" with the primer fitting. Presses right in and has the 1/8" hose barb on it. The other side, I have plugged with RTV in the past. I know you'r not supposed to used that around fuel but I did it anyways and seemed to be fine.

Plumbing is easy. The pulse line should be marked but it is the one coming off the square fuel pump. Then the top banjo fitting is the return with the bottom being the fuel inlet. Depending on what this carb came off of, you may need a restriction in the return line. Not all mikuni SBN's come with restrictions I have been told - some made for OEM's may not have them.

Vacuum lines? If you have vacuum lines I'm confused - maybe you meant the pulse line.

The upper needle screw is the high screw adjuster. These should also be marked with a H, low marked with a L. If you ever forget, just look where the main venturi lines up directly with the high speed screw. The high speed screw adds fuel to the main venturi.

All you have is 2 adjustment screws on SBN's. High and low. That's kind of the beauty. You can now change the low speed jet to dial in the midrange transition. Your old carb used that 3rd mid screw to attempt this tuning need.

Jetting needs? Depends what you have done to the motor - porting, pipe, flame arrestor...Starting point for a stock cylinder with a pipe is about 110 low and 125 high jets...possibly a tad rich but conservative.

1993 Laser Jet F15 - Mild port to PJS Cylinder.
1992 Laser Jet F14 - Raced in 1992 World Finals.
1992 550 SX - PJS Secret Weapon Big Bore, Kind of fast, LOL.
    1989 JS 550 - PJS motor Dual 46's, 50 MPH on GPS.
1989 Wet Jet - Upgraded 1994 50 HP motor & exhaust. 45 MPH, yee ha!
1986 JS 550 - Engine built. Working on fiberglass!
1976 JS 400 - Pretty much just a shell. Sure want to restore this some day!

Re: ok i got an SBN 44 now what?

Ok, these are the jets i have. the bigger one of the two says 125(this is the one that came out of the carb) and i acquired one from a freind that says 115. The smaller one that came out of the carb says nothing i'm guessing all the small one are blank but the one my freind gave me looks to be the same whats weird is the jets my freind gave me came out of a moded 550 with those goki reed cages. so what do i got and should i go ahead and get some selections of jets. or should i try both of these for the hell of it. I mean i cant hurt my motor by useing different jets can i, just wanted to make sure.

    thanks

Al jets are stamped. The bigger, high speed, are usuall on the top of them and the low speed, small ones, are usually on the side. Get a magnifing glass and doulbe check.

So because jets do determine your air/fuel mixture and A/F is the blood an engine runs on, yes it is imperatively important to have the right jets. Run it too rich and it will never run right...too lean and it gets too hat and seizes a piston...rebuild time.

i was looking in the 550 bible and in the carb options section someone clamed they had a 135 high speed jet and a 125 low speed jet in a 550 so would it be worth it to try my 120 low speed jet or just wait and try and find a 110 for my low speed jet

twitter announced today that it will be removing its implementation of stories dubbed “fleets.” the feature was either loved or hated by twitter users since its initial release last year.

this short-lived feature, which was released in november of last year, will be removed on august 3. twitter acknowledged the controversial nature of the snapchat/instagram clone with the farewell tweet. notably, there was no fleet from the main twitter account announcing the departure of the feature, only a standard tweet.

in the goodbye, the company said it is working on “new stuff.” one can hope that they add the ability to edit tweets, in addition to the new edit audience and monetization features.

in a more detailed blog post, twitter shared that it hoped fleets would make people more comfortable posting onto twitter. as fleets disappear, some of the fleet creation features, like gifs and stickers, will be implemented into the standard tweets composer.
