Love my cameras!

So we bought three new cameras for our house recently. They were really cheap maybe $20/$25 apiece and I expected themTo not be that great I didn’t expect the picture to be very clear or to be able to see the cameras at night do you always hear that saying you get what you pay for...Well in this case that is not true I got a lot more than what I paid for! I could not be happier with these cameras, they were very easy to hook up and I installed the app and within minutes I was looking at all the rooms I had placed the cameras in. What surprised me the most was how clear the picture was and the colors were bright!I am pretty sure the picture was in HD as well. I love the fact that it has the motion detector and sound attacked her and the one thing I was also very happy with was the wide angled view I can see the whole room!I was constantly having that problem in my kids playroom which is a very big room I could not
find a camera that would be able to view the whole entire room. It would normally only do half of the room and I would have to buy two camerasJust to be able to see the entire room. Butbnot with the cameras!I can see the whole entire room and clear as day I couldn’t be happier!I actually recommended these cameras to my sister who also went and purchased a few of them and she is also very happy with them as well! I would definitely recommend these cameras especially for the price you can’t beat it!

Minor issues but overall it’s a good app

Bought the cw007 yesterday and mounted it to watch our front door from our window inside, since we have recently had a couple packages “disappear” from our doorstep. I wanted something cheap and easy to use until we can afford something better and saw that this model had good reviews. I love everything about it except for the fact that the playback won’t work on the app, it keeps saying “failed to connect.” We made sure the micro sd was empty on our laptop before plugging it into the camera. I formatted it through the app at least 3 times. Restarted the app. Restarted my phone. Restarted the camera. Etc. and even though it looks like playback is recording on the app it won’t connect. Preview which is live stream is working fine, but the main reason I bought it is so it can record and playback so I can see what is happening with our packages. Until this gets fixed or until customer service responds to my request I sent them yesterday I will be leaving a 1 star review.

Update: within a few days of posting this review the playback issue has been fixed. Guess there was an issue with the app because we stopped trying to mess with it. Never received a response from customer service but overall just glad the issue was fixed.

Thank you for your feedback. Rest assured that we take all your feedback seriously and we're working it out to improve our products and services. No response from Customer Service in app

I WAS very happy with these cameras in my home. So I put a camera is in my grandpas room in his Adult living. He is on hospice with Dementia. Up until two weeks ago I could watch all day with flawless picture and perfect sound. Something has changed. As of a few months ago, customer service no longer responds in Chat/email in the app. I had one question regarding notifications months ago no response. The last two weeks including this very moment, the camera shows 92% yet no sound. There has been constant 4-5 second pauses if not just completely freezing up. Or it just will not reload and gives a network error that is the most constant daily pain.
I have excellent Wi-Fi connection in the facility and perfect Wi-Fi connection in my home and I am adjust a few cities away from him and the camera. I constantly close and restart the app and even shut off and restart my phone. Even a few hours ago the weather and temperature no longer is being displayed on either of my two devices, (Iphone 8plus & 7plus)
Customer service is nonexistent using the app. I say this because there has been huge problems with viewing my grandpa and the app saying ( Failed to turn on sound) and constant screen freezes. I would love correspondence. It’s pointless to have that feature on the app if there is never a reply. Hoping my review will bring some support.

Thank you for your review. We're sorry to hear you had such a frustrating experience, but we really appreciate you bringing this issue to our attention. Merkury Smart WiFi Camera Review

skip to main content

We review the Merkury Smart WiFi Camera to see how it compares to the likes of Wyze, Blink, and Arlo.

Bottom line: Above average

The Merkury Smart WiFi Camera is a pleasant surprise as far as cheap security cameras go. It won't turn heads with features but is a decent security camera that fits into a respectable smart home ecosystem. Merkury Smart WiFi Camera doesn't have cloud video storage, which is probably a deal-breaker for most folks. Still, it's not bad for a home security camera that costs less than $40.

We have years of experience reviewing security cameras, so we approached the Merkury Smart WiFi Camera with several goals. Specifically, we researched the camera's technology, installation, and customer support options. We also looked at customer reviews to balance our perspective with real-world performance.

Learn more about our review process in our methodology.

As far as technology goes, the Merkury Smart WiFi Camera isn't too complicated compared with other cameras under $40. It boasts 1080p video resolution, which provides enough detail for most folks without chewing through storage space and internet bandwidth too quickly.

The resolution works well with Merkury's 115º field of view, which shows a clear view of a room, especially if you install the camera in a corner. The infrared night vision on this wireless security camera works well and nearly matches daytime videos' clarity—similar to competitors like Wyze and Eufy.

The biggest weakness of the Merkury Smart WiFi Camera is that it doesn't offer cloud storage. Instead, you have the option to take screenshots and download short clips from live video feeds. For all other video storage needs, you must have a microSD card.

The good news is that this IP camera supports cards up to 128GB, which can last for months before it starts to overwrite old recordings. Merkury says the camera generally uses about 1GB per day, so even a smaller card is sufficient for long-term storage when the camera records with motion detection.

The bad news is that it doesn't come with a microSD card in the box. So you'll need to spend an extra $10–$25 on a card for your camera, diluting its affordability. Most competitors don't include microSD cards either, so this is more of a general gripe than a real drawback.

Plentiful smart home options

We didn't have much experience with Merkury Innovations before this review, but it was surprising how much smart home equipment the brand sells.

There are 19 smart home devices in the lineup (16 cost less than $40), including smart lighting, smart plugs, video doorbells, security cameras, and entry sensors.

In general, we found favorable customer reviews for these products—they're cheap enough to try out in your smart home but easy to return if you don't like the results.

Each smart device (including the Merkury Smart Camera) connects to Wi-Fi and uses the Geeni app. They even work with voice assistants like Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant,* and Microsoft Cortana.

While we like the Cortana compatibility since there aren't many smart home devices that support it, it's not as useful as Alexa and Google Assistant.

Like most security cameras, this unit connects to your home Wi-Fi network, so you can control it from your smartphone using the Geeni app (Geeni is a sibling brand to Merkury Innovations).

The app has a straightforward layout that's easy to use for live viewing your camera feed, watching recordings, or talking with people using the Merkury Smart WiFi Camera's two-way audio.

How do I set up my Merkury Smart WiFi Camera?

  1. Connect the camera, USB cable, and power adapter before plugging it in.
  2. Use the Geeni app (iOS and Google Play) to connect the camera to your Wi-Fi network.
  3. Adjust the settings, link to a voice assistant, and insert a memory card as needed.

You can place the camera on any flat surface or attach it to a wall with the included adhesive pad. We like that the camera's bendable stand allows you to point the lens at a particular vista like an entrance or pricey home theater setup.

Unfortunately, this camera doesn't support 5GHz Wi-Fi networks, so you may need to adjust your phone's settings to 2.4GHz during the setup process if you're struggling to connect to the camera.

We also found some user reviews that note occasional Wi-Fi problems like dropped connections and laggy video. But these issues don't seem to affect most folks.

On the surface, Merkury Innovations doesn't offer a ton in terms of customer service. The manual lists a phone number, and the main website has an email form for getting assistance, but you have to dig deeper for additional support options.

For example, the manual directs users to the support site for Geeni cameras, which adds live chat support to the list. But this is more helpful for the Geeni app than this specific smart security camera. You can also access basic support through the Geeni app.

As we read critical user reviews on retail sites like Walmart and Geeni's social media pages, we often saw the company following up to offer more assistance. So we’re hopeful that the company pays attention to customer feedback and works to fix problems.

Overall, Merkury Innovations' customer service isn't as seamless as interacting with Wyze, Arlo, and Ring—but it's still very responsive and helpful.

How Merkury compares with other cameras under $40

We were skeptical when we started researching the Merkury Smart WiFi Camera for this review, but we were pleasantly surprised by this nifty little camera.

While its specs are mostly average and won't outshine Wyze, Merkury's biggest strength is its posse of affordable smart home devices. Check out our guide to cheap security cameras for our top picks to watch over your home on a budget.

Merkury Smart WiFi Camera FAQ

Merkury Smart WiFi Camera records to a microSD card (sold separately)—it supports cards up to 128GB.

Based on our research, we think that Merkury Innovations puts a lot of effort into its products and customer service, making it fairly reliable. Though it’s not at the same level as top brands like Arlo and Wyze, it holds its own.

Poor Cam & and Worst Cam App

I purchased it from Ross. I wish if I would have returned it but it already passed the 30 Days return Policy.
I can never get it to set up the connection Automatically it keeps saying password incorrect or poor WIFI connection. Finally I was able to get it set up manually but every other day or some time hours it kicks me out.
I love the idea of it rotating not like other cams yet it is very poor Cam I will never recommend it to anyone.

Works Wonderfully

I picked this up from Ross not expecting much and I understand that others have had problems getting it to work, but everything seems fine for me. It took a while and some trial and error for it to work in the beginning, but other than that, I connected, and it does a great job doing what it says it does.

Don’t use recommend app use Geeni

Great little camera for the money have 2 in the house.. paired very easy using the geeni app don’t use the app everybody is complaining about.. have both cameras and two WiFi light bulbs and can control everything easily from this app.. also very impressed with the night vision
