AT&T phones: Your options explained

TechRadar's guide to finding the best AT&T phone for you

We've reviewed the contenders for best AT&T phone, and compared the value to the price. Ignoring any personal preferences and/or biases towards specific operating systems, be it Android or iOS, we've picked AT&T's best phones in a number of categories.

All of these phones are available through an AT&T installment plan, which spreads the cost of the phone over a set amount of time. For this article, we've looked at the AT&T plans that spread the cost of the phone over 30 months, with an option for upgrade after 80-percent of the device's sales price is paid off.

From zero installments to $30 or more a month, AT&T's best phones come in at all prices. And, you always have the option to pay the full price of the device upfront. How much you want to pay for a new phone is up to you, but the best phones don't come cheap.

For the maximum value, we always recommend trading in your older device. While trade-in rebates can vary drastically depending on the age and also price of the older phone, it's a great way to shave some cost off. If you're not looking to trade in then there are also a ton of discounts available on certain devices when you pick them up with a fresh plan. These devices don't tend to be the latest or most feature-laden devices on the market, but there are a number of good flagships still available via this method.

1. Samsung Galaxy S21 series

David Imel / Android Authority

Samsung kicked things off this year with its hottest device lineup yet: the Samsung Galaxy S21 family. This includes the Samsung Galaxy S21, Galaxy S21 Plus, and Galaxy S21 Ultra. Along with different sizes and price points, there are some other key differences between the three. But all of them are worth taking a closer look at before you make a final decision.

There are some standard features these AT&T phones share as well. All three rely on the same processor, run on Android 11 with Samsung’s One UI skin, and feature dust and water resistance. Their dynamic 2x AMOLED screens are among the best in the industry, and all three devices have the same resolution but in different sizes.

2. Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series

Hadlee Simons / Android Authority

The Samsung Galaxy S lineup may be more popular, but more demanding Samsung fans will prefer the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 smartphones. Both models come with more powerful specs, a larger display, and an S Pen stylus that will turn your device into a much more productive tool. Prices start at $999, but the Note experience is tough to beat, and these are some of the best AT&T phones.

Also:These are the best Samsung phones

This year we have two versions of the Note: the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. The most notable differences between the two phones are display, construction, and cameras. There are some other differences, clearly (such as the slightly smaller battery in the Galaxy Note 20), but otherwise, the devices are pretty similar. The Note 20 has a plastic body and a flat display, while the Note 20 Ultra comes with a metal/glass construction and a curved edge screen. Check the specs below to see the differences in more detail.

3. Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G

David Imel / Android Authority

Google’s Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G represent the top half of the company’s 2020 offerings, and they’re very similar on paper. Both pack the same camera array as well as a Snapdragon 765G chipset, but it’s their differences that land them both on the list.

See also: Pixel 4a 5G buyer’s guide | Pixel 5 buyer’s guide

As the premier device, the Pixel 5 packs all of the bells and whistles that Google had room for. It’s entirely aluminum wrapped in lightly textured bioresin, but there’s a clever cutout that still allows wireless charging. The Pixel 5 also ditched the headphone jack, but it does sport an IP68 water-resistance rating. You can even grab the Pixel 5 in Sorta Sage, which is an excellent escape from the Just Black of the other Pixels.

On the midrange side, the Pixel 4a 5G jumps back to an all-plastic build. It regains the headphone jack too, but at the cost of wireless charging and a water-resistance rating. The two phones have their differences, but they might be worth it, considering that you can save $200 by opting for the Pixel 4a 5G.

If you want Google’s latest launch, you can also pick up the Pixel 5a and activate it on AT&T. It keeps just about everything there is to like from the Pixel 4a 5G but adds an IP67 rating to the mix and a much larger battery. In fact, the 4,680mAh cell is Google’s largest to date.

4. Samsung Galaxy A52 5G

Eric Zeman / Android Authority

Samsung’s Galaxy A52 5G is the OEM’s latest mid-range contestant, and it packs plenty of the features you want in an affordable phone. It’s the sequel to 2020’s Galaxy A51, but it packs a more modern style and looks much closer to a Galaxy S21 sibling.

See also: Samsung Galaxy A52 5G review — Scrappy mid-range fighter

The Galaxy A52 5G is one of the best AT&T phones, especially at a $5 per month price tag. For your money, you’re getting a 6.5-inch 120Hz display with an IP67 rating for your wildest adventures. Samsung tapped the Snapdragon 750G SoC to lead the way, and you can count on 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage to keep you going. The Galaxy A52 also packs a large 4,500mAh battery and 25W charging so that you won’t need long at an outlet.

Even though Samsung went for an older Gorilla Glass construction and weaker secondary cameras, there’s a lot to like about the new Galaxy A52 5G. The 64MP primary shooter won’t let you down, and the build quality feels like a phone that costs twice as much.

Samsung Galaxy A52 5G specs:

  • Display: 6.5-inch, Full HD+
  • SoC: Snapdragon 750G
  • RAM: 6GB

  • Front camera: 32MP
  • Battery: 4,500mAh
  • Software: Android 11

5. LG Velvet 5G

The LG Velvet isn’t exactly the most powerful of AT&T phones, but the Snapdragon 765G chipset and 8GB of RAM should be enough to keep most users happy. It also comes with a great display, but what has everyone going is the LG Velvet’s design. The device is flashy and fashion-forward. It’s great for those who don’t need the best performance but would like a great-looking handset.

Unfortunately, the LG Velvet will most likely mark the end of AT&T’s support for LG devices. The OEM has left the smartphone industry, and there’s not much likelihood of a restock when the Velvet eventually goes out of stock.

  • Front camera: 16MP
  • Battery: 4,300mAh
  • Software: Android 10

6. Motorola Moto One 5G

Motorola

Motorola’s Moto One 5G is a brand-new device, yet it’s not entirely as new of an AT&T phone as it seems. It’s strikingly similar to the Moto G 5G Plus, but with one significant change — the Moto One 5G is loaded with a midrange Snapdragon 765G chip.

The Moto One 5G isn’t exactly the most potent 5G device, even compared to other midrange options. It’s rocking just 4GB of RAM, but that should still get most jobs done. The Pixel 4a 5G, by comparison, offers 6GB in a smaller package. Motorola’s Moto One 5G relies on a large 6.7-inch display, a smooth 90Hz refresh rate, and a massive 5,000mAh battery. At least we know where the extra RAM space went.

7. Apple iPhone 13 series

Luke Pollack / Android Authority

Apple expanded its selection of smartphones in 2020, and all four models are back for 2021. The iPhone 13 series includes the iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13, 13 Pro, and 13 Pro Max. There’s no denying the iPhone 13 devices are among the best AT&T phones available, but it might be hard to choose your perfect match.

The iPhone 13 Mini is just right for anyone who wants a new iPhone but doesn’t want to deal with larger screen sizes in their tiny pockets. The iPhone 13 is the best for most people who want a powerful smartphone but don’t want to pay a lot for it and can live without a few premium features.

8. Apple iPhone SE

Budget premium phones were all the hype in 2020, with the Pixel 4a and iPhone SE offering impressive quality at very accessible price points. The Pixel 4a isn’t on AT&T’s website yet, but the iPhone SE is available for purchase right now, and it’s easily one of the best AT&T phones to get.

Next:The best budget camera phones

The iPhone SE offers the Apple promise at about $400. It includes the familiar glass and metal design we saw on the iPhone 8 and has a very competitive single-lens camera. Users will also love that Apple didn’t skimp out on the processor, as the iPhone SE uses the same Apple A13 Bionic processor we see in iPhone 11 handsets. Other benefits over the Pixel 4a include wireless charging and an IP67 rating, two features the Google budget phone lacks.
