A Beginner’s Guide to Clearing, Cleansing, and Charging Crystals

Why is cleansing important?

Many people use crystals to soothe their mind, body, and soul. Some believe that crystals act on an energetic level, sending natural vibrations out into the world.

Crystals often travel long distances, from source to seller, before a purchase is made. Each transition exposes the stone to energies that may be misaligned with your own.

And when used for healing, these stones are said to absorb or redirect the negativity you’re working to release.

Regularly cleansing and recharging your stones is the only way to restore your crystal to its natural state. This act of care can also reinvigorate your own sense of purpose.

Read on to learn about some of the most common clearing methods, how to align a crystal with your intention, and more.

1. Running water

Water is said to neutralize any negative energy stored inside the stone and return it back to the earth. Although natural running water — like a stream — is best, you can also rinse your stone under a faucet.

Whatever your water source, ensure that your stone is completely submerged. Pat dry when complete.

Approximate duration: 1 minute per stone

Use this for: hard stones, such as quartz

Don’t use this for: stones that are brittle or soft, such as selenite, kyanite, and halite

2. Salt water

Salt has been used throughout history to absorb unwanted energy and banish negativity.

If you’re near the ocean, consider collecting a bowl of fresh salt water. Otherwise, mix a tablespoon of sea, rock, or table salt into a bowl of water.

Make sure that your stone is completely submerged, and allow it to soak for a few hours to a few days’ time. Rinse and pat dry when complete.

Approximate duration: up to 48 hours

Use this for: hard stones, such as quartz and amethyst

Don’t use this for: stones that are soft, porous, or contain trace metals, such as malachite, selenite, halite, calcite, lepidolite, and angelite

3. Brown rice

This method can also be used to draw out negativity in a safe and contained setting. It’s especially beneficial for protective stones, such as black tourmaline.

To do this, fill a bowl with dry brown rice and bury your stone beneath the grains. Dispose of the rice immediately after the cleansing, as the rice is said to have absorbed the energy you’re trying to eradicate.

Approximate duration: 24 hours

Use this for: any stone

4. Natural light

Although ritual cleansing is often centered around certain points in the solar or lunar cycle, you can set your stone out at any time to cleanse and recharge.

Set your stone out before nightfall and plan to bring it in before 11 a.m. This will allow your stone to bathe in the light of both the moon and sun.

Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight may weather the stone’s surface, so make sure you return for it in the morning.

If you’re able to, place your stone directly on the earth. This will allow for further cleansing. Wherever they are, ensure they won’t be disturbed by wildlife or passersby.

Afterward, give the stone a quick rinse to remove any dirt and debris. Pat dry.

Approximate duration: 10 to 12 hours

Use this for: most tumbled stones

Don’t use this for: vibrant stones, such as amethyst, in sunlight; soft stones, such as celestite, halite, and selenite, that may be damaged by inclement weather

5. Sage

Sage is a sacred plant with a multitude of healing properties. Smudging your stone is said to clear inharmonious vibrations and restore its natural energy.

You’ll need:

  • a firesafe bowl
  • a lighter or matches
  • loose or bundled sage

If you’re unable to smudge outdoors, make sure you’re near an open window. This will allow the smoke and negative energy to disperse.

When you’re ready, ignite the tip of the sage with the flame. Transfer the sage to your nondominant hand and firmly grasp your stone and move it through the smoke.

Allow the smoke to envelop the stone for about 30 seconds. If it’s been a while since your last cleansing — or you feel the stone is holding onto a lot — consider smudging for an additional 30 seconds.

Approximate duration: about 30 to 60 seconds per stone

Use this for: any stone

6. Sound

Sound healing allows a single pitch or tone to wash over an area, bringing it into the same vibration as the tone.

This can be accomplished using chanting, singing bowls, a tuning fork, or even a nice bell. It doesn’t matter what key the sound is, so long as the sound emitted is loud enough for the vibration to fully encompass the stone.

This method is ideal for collectors who have a large volume of crystals not easily inventoried or moved.

Approximate duration: 5 to 10 minutes

Use this for: any stone

7. Using a larger stone

Large quartz clusters, amethyst geodes, and selenite slabs can be great tools for clearing smaller stones.

Place your stone directly inside or on top of any of these stones. It’s thought that the larger stone’s vibrations remove the inharmonious energies found in the resting stone.

Approximate duration: 24 hours

Use this for: any stone

8. Using smaller stones

Carnelian, clear quartz, and hematite are also said to have an overall clearing effect.

Because these stones are typically smaller, you may need to have more than one on hand to successfully clear other stones.

Place the clearing stones into a small bowl, and set the stone you want restore on top.

Approximate duration: 24 hours

Use this for: any stone

9. Breath

Breathwork can also be an effective cleansing method.

To get started, hold the stone in your dominant hand. Focus on your intention for a moment and deeply inhale through your nostrils.

Bring the stone closer to your face and exhale short, forceful breaths through the nose and onto the stone to bring the stone to its highest vibration.

Approximate duration: about 30 seconds per stone

Use this for: small stones

10. Visualization

Although this is considered the safest way to clear stones, it can be intimidating for some. The more in tune you are with your sense of self, the easier it may be to redirect your energy to the stone you want to restore.

Take a few minutes to ground and center your energy, then pick up your stone and visualize your hands filling with white, radiant light.

See this light surround the stone and feel it growing brighter in your hands. Envision the impurities flushing out of the stone, allowing the stone to shine brighter with renewed purpose.

Continue this visualization until you feel a shift in the stone’s energy.

Approximate duration: about 1 minute per stone

Use this for: any stone

How to program your crystal

Although crystals are said to have innate healing properties, taking the time to set an intention for your stone can help you connect with its energy and restore your own sense of purpose.

You may feel comfortable holding the stone in your hand as you meditate, or placing it on your third eye. You can also lay back and allow the stone to rest on the corresponding chakra, or area of body that you wish to work with.

Envision the stone’s energy merging with your own. Speak to the stone — silently or verbally — and ask for assistance in working through your current endeavor.

Thank the stone for its presence then spend a few minutes in meditation.

How to activate your crystal

If your stone feels heavier than expected — like it’s lost its shine — it may benefit from a little energetic activation.

Try lending it some of your own energy by speaking to it, singing to it, or sending it some vital life force energy through your breath. A little interaction can go a long way!

If you have plans outside, consider taking the stone out with you. Many people find that allowing the stone to soak up natural energy at the park or beach has a powerful effect.

You can also create an activation grid by surrounding the stone with its more energetic counterparts. Popular choices include ruby, clear quartz, apophyllite, kyanite, selenite, and carnelian.

You can use whatever stones you’re drawn toward. Just make sure they fully surround the main crystal so that it can completely bask in their vibrations.

Common questions

How often do I need to cleanse my stones?

The more often you use a stone, the more energy it collects. A good rule of thumb is to clear all of your stones at least once a month.

If an individual stone is feeling heavier than usual, go ahead and cleanse it. You don’t have to wait a designated amount of time between clearings.

What is the best method for clearing stones?

Find a method that resonates with you and your practices. What works best for you may not work as well for someone else, so pay attention to what feels right.

How do I know when a stone is cleansed?

The stone should feel energetically and physically lighter to the touch.

What should I do with my stones after they’ve been cleansed?

Find mindful places to keep your stones. If you can, keep them near windows or plants so they can absorb this natural healing energy. Otherwise, place the stones around your home, office, or other space in a way that aligns with your intentions.

The bottom line

When we care for our crystals, we’re caring for ourselves. We’re allowing energy that’s inharmonious with our lives and intentions to leave in a peaceful and healing manner.

Taking these small measures allows us to be more mindful in our interactions with the stones, with ourselves, and with others.

How to choose a crystal

There are a few ways you can choose a crystal, whether it’s your first or just the latest to add to your collection.

  1. Choose a crystal that you feel drawn to. This is one of our favourite ways because it all comes down to your own intuition!
Whether you’re in the room with crystals or browsing online, pick one that catches your eye. It might have a message or purpose for you that you don’t even know you need yet!

  2. Choose a crystal based on what you are struggling with. This struggle might be something physical or on a more energetic level.
For example, rose quartz is a good stone if you are going through a time of upheaval or intense stress, whereas amethyst is thought to aid with headaches and nervous tension.

  3. Choose a crystal based on what you want more of. For example, if you want more money, choose a crystal that is about abundance and finances. If it’s love you want, opt for a stone that is all about attracting love.

How to use your crystals

Now that you have a crystal, or two, or 20 (we don’t judge) - how do you actually use them?

A lot of this comes down to personal preference. Like any spiritual or energetic practice, crystals are best used in a way that feels supportive and healing for you. But to get you started, let’s look at some ways that you can use your crystals.

  • Hold them when you need a little bit of support or reassurance

  • Use them as part of your meditation and/or yoga practice

  • Pop one in your bra for all-day support (just remember to take it out before throwing it in the wash!)

  • Keep it in your wallet or purse - a good option for abundance crystals!

  • Take a bath with them - you can put them in the water (check whether your crystal of choice is waterproof first), or simply put them on the edge of the bath along with a candle or two

  • Decorate your space with them - have a couple on your desk, a pile in a favourite dish with your rings, or even use a large crystal or tower as a centrepiece on the mantel!

  • Pop a calming crystal or two into the bottom side of your pillowcase

  • Use them as an energy cleanser - this might be your own energy, or the energy of tools such as your oracle cards. They are a great alternative if you can’t light up a smudge stick all the time!

  • Nestle them up with your plants - just make sure that you don’t accidentally water them if they aren’t water-safe crystals!

How to cleanse your crystals

Just like uses, there are a few ways to cleanse your crystals. Remember that if your crystals aren’t a type that can be used in water, use one of the other cleansing methods!

  • Put them outside or on a windowsill on a full moon to recharge.

  • Use the rain as a way to cleanse them with water, or soak them in a bowl of salt water

  • Smudge them with a sage stick or some palo santo. If you don’t have any handy, use a candle for a quick cleanse by fire!

  • Bury them underground for 24 hours. This allows the earth to absorb any unwanted energy and refresh the crystals.

  • Use a cleansing crystal. For example, you can lay your crystals on a selenite tower, and the selenite can clear the energy of the other crystals.

When should you cleanse your crystals?

There are a few times that it is recommended to cleanse your crystals.

When you first purchase your crystals and bring them home, it’s a good idea to cleanse them of any energies they might have picked up. You might also want to cleanse them if you’re going through intense or difficult times and are in need of as much positive energy.

Ideally, you want to cleanse them on a regular basis - once a month is a good guide to start with. That way, they’re always ready to go when you need their gentle support.

How To Cleanse Your Crystals To Maximize Their Healing Vibes

Crystals are just as celebrated for their purported healing powers as they are their natural beauty. But if you use crystals in hopes of aligning with their spiritual properties (and not just their mystical aesthetic), then it’s important that you regularly cleanse them to ensure their frequencies remain clear, fresh, and effective. Knowing how to cleanse crystals is a necessary part of working with crystal healing, and finding a method that works for you will help you maximize on their restorative magic.

Just as our clothes need to be washed after wearing and our shelves need to be dusted every so often, crystals require some spiritual maintenance in order to be effective healing tools. “Crystals store and emit information by way of frequency and vibration, so they need to be released of excess energetic information to maintain their vibrancy and potency,” crystal healer Mariah K. Lyons, author of Crystal Healing For Women, tells Bustle. “Cleansing doesn’t remove the crystal’s base energetic tone, but simply wipes it clean of energy that is no longer needed so you can recode the crystal with a new intention for your life.”

Every crystal is believed to have its own unique healing qualities — but in order for us to be able to align with them, their energy fields have to be primed and ready to give and receive, without being bogged down by unwanted spiritual clutter. “It is imperative to cleanse your personal healing crystals, as cleansing helps to maintain and restore their natural, optimal, and highest healing potential,” Claudia Chirico, bio-energy practitioner at Before Noon, tells Bustle. An un-cleansed crystal could be storing all sorts of heavy or negative energies that its picked up along its journey. But once cleansed, we can program crystals with our intentions and fully enjoy their soothing vibes.

There are lots of ways to cleanse crystals, and you can experiment with different methods depending on what type of crystals you’re working with — as well as what feels right to you. So whether you’re trying to rid your rose quartz of a weird vibe or finally figure out how to cleanse selenite (hint: don’t put it in water!), here are eight simple ways to cleanse your crystals that’ll allow you to make the most of their mystical potential.

1. Cleansing With Moonlight & Sunlight

One of the easiest and safest ways to purify your crystals is to simply put them them out under the sun or moonlight — and it’s an ideal method for any astrology lovers out there, too. This serves as a cosmic cleanse that will release any unwanted vibes from your stones and make their energy feel more vibrant. “Placing your crystals in sunlight energizes the stones, while placing your crystals under a full moon will draw out and clear away any impurities,” Chirico says. Basking in the direct sunlight all day is just as powerfully cleansing for your crystals as is soaking up the moonlight all night, so do whatever feels right or works best for your schedule.

This method is especially useful if you’re trying to figure out how to cleanse black tourmaline or how to cleanse moldavite (two powerful crystals that can absorb a lot of energy) — as the power of the sun and moon can transmute even the heaviest and darkest of vibes.

2. Cleansing With Salt

Salt is naturally detoxifying, and that's why people like to add it to their bath water or use it to create circles of protection during spiritual rituals. Similarly, it can be used to cleanse your crystals. Fill a shallow bowl with sea salt and put your crystals in it, partially burying them in the salt. Then simply leave them there for a few hours or overnight to give the salt time to work its cleansing magic. However, keep in mind that contact with salt can be potentially damaging to certain stones — such as turquoise, opal, and moldavite. Do some research to ensure your crystals can handle direct salt exposure before using this method.

3. Cleansing With Sound

There’s a reason that hearing the sound of a crystal singing bowl or the ringing of a gong can feel so grounding, healing, and relaxing — and that same method can be used to soothe the sensitive frequencies of your crystals. “Sound currents can help to break up energetic patterning and release stagnant energy,” Lyons says. “Using tuning forks, chimes, quartz bowls, or drums can change up the frequency of and release old energy from your stones.” Experiment with different sounds and use your intuition to figure out what works best to lighten up your crystals’ heavier vibes.

4. Cleansing With Water

Giving your crystals an old-fashioned washing with water not only scrubs away any literal dust that's accumulated on them, but also serves as a much-needed energy cleanse. Use a bowl filled with water to create a miniature bath for your crystals and let them soak. It’s ideal to use a natural water source like rain, river, or ocean water — but regular water works in a pinch, too. “Immerse your stones in water for 20 minutes to two hours, and add a pinch of sea salt to the water for additional cleansing and restructuring, if you’d like,” Lyons says. “Stones can also be cleansed in a body of water, such as a river, stream, or the ocean.”

If you’re wondering how to cleanse clear quartz, rose quartz, or amethyst, this is one of the most simple and straightforward methods (as most quartz can handle exposure to water). However, you’ll want to research each crystal in your collection before cleansing in water to ensure they won’t be damaged if gotten wet. “A good rule of thumb is to remember that anything that ends in -ite (selenite, angelite, azurite, etc.) should not be placed in water,” Lyons says. Looking into whether your crystals can be safely soaked in water will prevent you from ruining them.

5. Cleansing With Smoke

Whether you use the fragrant-smelling smoke of an incense stick or a burning bundle of dried herbs, smoke cleansing is an easy way to rid your crystals of any stuffy vibes. “You can cleanse your crystals daily by using smoke to clear away any negative energy the stones might have absorbed,” Chirico says. The smoke will cleanse your personal energy field through the process, too, so knowing how to cleanse crystals with incense is a must.

This method is especially effective if you work with the smoke of plants and herbs that have specifically purifying properties. “Burning dried rosemary, juniper, cedar, or resins such as pine, frankincense or myrrh — and then allowing the herb smoke to billow around the stones — is a great way to energetically cleanse crystals,” Lyons says. Just make sure you’re buying ethically-sourced and culturally-appropriate cleansing tools.

6. Cleansing With The Earth

Crystals are natural wonders that come from the earth, so it makes sense that re-aligning them with the earth’s healing energy would be cleansing. Burying your crystals in the soil allows them to sync up with nature’s naturally-grounding vibe, which will help to clear away any impurities or negative vibes. Plus, digging up these freshly-cleansed stones will feel like finding hidden treasure. Just make sure you bury them in a safe place.

7. Cleansing Using Other Crystals

It may sound a little redundant, but some crystals are so powerful in their purifying properties that they actually have the ability to clear away stagnant energy fromothercrystals. “Certain stones emit a particular extremely high frequency that acts as a cleanser for other stones,” Lyons says. “Simply placing your crystals on top of these cleansing/charging stones for a few hours will leave them cleansed and energetically vibrant.” Selenite, carnelian, kyanite, and the TikTok famous moldavite are a few highly-cleansing crystals that can be used for this method.

8. Cleansing With Visualizations

Cleansing your crystals with tools is great, but it’s always nice to you know that you can rid stones of stagnant energies by simply using the power of your mind. If you want to try purifying your crystals using visualization, start by finding a quiet space where you can concentrate and getting into a meditative state. Hold your crystal in your hands, and then visualize a bright stream of pure white light beaming straight out of your third eye chakra (located on your forehead, between your eyes), surrounding the crystal with its glow like a protective shield. Imagine the light has the power to transmute anything negative into pure goodness. Do this until you feel that your crystal is sufficiently cleansed (you’ll have to trust your intuition around this), then move onto the next piece.

It's important to do some research on each stone in your collection to find out which cleansing methods work best (and which to avoid), but here are a few guidelines on how to cleanse popular crystals.

How to Cleanse Clear Quartz

Clear quartz is one of the most accessible crystals for beginners, as it naturally amplifies energy and is easy to connect with. It's also really easy to cleanse! Any of the above methods of cleansing work well with most quartz crystals, so go with whatever feels right to you.

How to Cleanse Selenite

Selenite is a powerfully purifying crystal all on its own, so it doesn't need to be cleansed often. But if you do need to cleanse a piece, try using the smoke method, sound healings, or doing a cleansing visualization — as its porous composition means it needs to be kept away from water, salt, and outdoor moisture.

How to Cleanse Amethyst

Amethyst is a great crystal for promoting relaxation, creativity, and spirituality. This gorgeous purple stone is part of the quartz family — so like clear quartz, most of the aforementioned cleansing methods will be totally safe to use. Experiment with different ones and figure out which feels most effective.

How to Cleanse Black Tourmaline

Black-colored crystals are thought to be highly protective against negativity, and black tourmaline is one of the most powerful. Because it absorbs so much energy, it's important to cleanse this stone regularly. Submerging it in water could damage the stone, so try cleansing it using smoke, sound, visualization, or by simply setting it out under the purifying rays of sunshine.

How to Cleanse Rose Quartz

The heart-healing and love-promoting vibrations of a rose quartz are easiest to connect with when the stone has been cleansed and cleared of any stagnant energies. Like clear quartz and amethyst, rose quartz can be safely cleansed using virtually any of the above methods — including by submerging in water or salt. Go with whatever you feel will work best.

How to Cleanse Moldavite

Moldavite is a powerful mineral that was formed as a result of a meteorite, which is probably why its energy feels so other-worldly. Moldavite is a natural energy purifier, so there’s usually no need to cleanse it often — but if you feel it’s time, try aligning with its cosmic roots and charging it up under the light of a full moon or letting it sit in the sun for a few hours. Just be sure to avoid submerging it in water or salt.

How To Cleanse Crystals With Incense

Smoke cleansing is one of the most well-known methods when it comes to purifying crystal energy, but you don't have to have any fancy tools or an extensive dried herb collection to do it. You can easily and effectively cleanse crystals with incense by allowing the smoke to swirl around the crystal and focusing on the intention of clearing away any unwanted energies.

RUSSH Magazine

If you're working with or using crystals on an energetic level - appreciating them beyond their aesthetic beauty - then cleansing them regularly is very important.

Before a crystal makes its way to you, it will have been handled by a whole bunch of different people. And each time your crystal is handled it can pick up the energy of the handler. In general, crystals can pick up and store the energy in their surroundings. But cleansing your crystals will restore them to their original state and help them work most effectively for you.

Once you've learned how to use crystals and which ones you need to use, here are some of the easiest ways to cleanse your crystals.

If you're just starting out, head to our shop for the perfect beginners pack to crystal healing.

Exposing them to moonlight

An easy one, all you need to do is leave your crystals outside and allow them sit under the moonlight of an evening. It's best done under a Full Moon when the light will be brightest and the energy from the Moon is its most refreshing. This method is safe and effective for all crystals.

Cleansing with salt water

This works best if you can get water directly from the ocean, but if you can't, adding salt to tap water will work reasonably well too. Drop your crystals into the water. A minute or two is enough but you can leave them for longer if you like. Make sure to rinse them clean afterwards.

Don't use this method of cleansing for soft of brittle crystals as it make cause them to break or dissolve.

Natural and running water

This is another effective way to cleanse the energy of your crystals. Water from rain or from a stream will earth your crystals and neutralise any energies stored in them. Collect some natural water in a container and drop your crystals in, or let them sit out in the rain for a while. Just remember not to do this with soft, porous of fragile crystals.

The balancing energy from the sun can help to clear out anything stored in your crystals. This one is easy, just leave your stones to sit in the light for a time.

Just as burning sage can clear the energies in the room or space, it too can clear the stored energies in your crystals. Allow the smoke from the sage to circle each crystal. This is a process known as smudging.

Another way to neutralise the energies in your crystals is to earth them - literally. Bury them in the ground for a time and they'll be refreshed and ready to use again. This technique is not suitable for brittle crystals, just try it with the hardier ones.

Using other crystals

There are certain crystals that are effective in balancing and cleansing the rest. Stones like amethyst or selenite are the some of the best choices. Lay your crystals on or near your amethyst, selenite or other cleansing stone. Leave them there for at least a few hours.

Visualisation and meditation

This is a technique that is suitable for those more experienced in crystal healing. But the process involves sitting in silence and visualising your crystals bathed in white light as you hold them. Imagine any negativity or ineffective stored energy wash away. This is a technique you can use for all crystals.
