Like the overall Encompass Rating System, the Culture & Community Beacon is designed to evolve as metrics are developed and ready for integration. Our partnership with Feedback Labs and Guidestar by Candid, and other partners including Fund for Shared Insight, GlobalGiving, and Keystone Accountability, enables us to launch the first version of this beacon with Constituent Feedback information collected on Candid's site.

Feedback practices have been shown to support better Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion outcomes, an essential area of assessment that we intend to further expand and develop in the future. Feedback Labs has documented several studies which indicate that beyond achieving organizational goals, nonprofits that are attentive and responsive to concerns and ideas raised by beneficiaries establish stronger relationships with the people they serve, promote greater equity, and empower constituents in ways that can help to ensure better long-term outcomes. You can find resources to help nonprofits improve their feedback practices here.

DIFF`RENT STROKES: PARTYING WITH BACHELORS NO. 1, NO. 2 AND NO.

Regulars include Larry Walsh, 36; his wife, Gael Doar, 32, and their son, John; Dale Liebach, 33; his wife, Kathy Patterson, 35, and their 9-month-old son, Patrick.

Costello`s friends and their children arrived at 7 p.m. on a recent Friday night, casually dressed. Sometimes they order out for pizza or Chinese food, and sometimes they make dinner themselves. This occasion marked John Walsh`s first birthday, so there would be a homemade dinner, cake and presents.

Walsh, a vice president for Hill & Knowlton, the public relations firm, busied himself in the kitchen making three-colored pasta with gorgonzola cheese, veal piccata and vegetables al dente (with zucchini, summer squash, red peppers and onions).

Costello`s modest second-floor apartment is decorated with treasures collected from his trips abroad when he was assistant press secretary to Rosalynn Carter. Those souvenirs include a Japanese screen, an Ecuadorian rug, an embroidered Arab wedding veil and a chubby, ceramic antique pig from Costa Rica.

To prepare for the children`s visits, however, Costello child-proofs his apartment beforehand, placing all valuable or breakable objects on high shelves and replacing his Swedish crystal with cheap wine glasses.

''If you value your friends, you value their children,'' says Costello, explaining his interest in and patience with his friends` kids. ''Their children are part of my life,'' he continues, ''and I want to share them.''

Before the adults ate dinner, John Walsh--with help from his younger friend Patrick--attacked his presents.

While the birthday boy was not particularly enthusiastic about the starched, yellow suit he received, he did fancy his new truck and quickly settled into the blue canvas rocker he received. By 8 p.m., the two boys were fast asleep.

The adults consumed the first course of pasta while Walsh and Costello attended to the veal. The group filled their plates and returned to the living room, where they arranged themselves on couches, chairs or the floor.

Talk focused on jobs, the experience of moving to a new city, the merits of Chicago and the political concerns of Chicagoans versus those of Washingtonians.

As they often do after the meal and conversation, the group then settled down to watch a rented movie on Costello`s VCR.

''When you go out to dinner or entertain,'' explains Larry Walsh, ''you want to be with your kids. You just don`t see them that often when you work all day, so it becomes something that you want to do, rather than something you have to do.''

''Also, it`s especially nice to have other friends who have kids, because they don`t mind if we bring the kids over and trash the house.''
