Naruto: The 15 Most Shocking Deaths In The Series, Ranked

Masashi Kishimoto, the creator of Naruto, has never been shy of killing off characters in his series. In fact, where other mangaka shy away from killing off their characters, Kishimoto often does it because Naruto is much darker than some other stories out there.

Over time, we've had to deal with lots of deaths in Naruto with nearly all of them being painful, to say the least. Although there are more than just 10 shocking deaths in this series, we've tried to pick the 10 most startling ones that we've seen to date. Here are the 10 most shocking deaths that we've seen in Naruto.

Updated on September 4th, 2020 by Josh Davison: Despite the series being over, Naruto continues to be one of the most popular and widely discussed anime in the world. Some of this is thanks to the continuation through Boruto, but Naruto keeps getting a bulk of the attention regardless of what's going on in Boruto right now. One of the things that made Naruto a compelling anime is the fact that characters could and, frequently, would die. Characters that were well-rounded and fully established would get wiped out in oftentimes grisly fashions. With that in mind, five more entries have been added to the list to spotlight more shocking deaths from Naruto.

15 Shikaku Nara And Inoichi Yamanaka

Shikaku and Inoichi were of the generation of shinobi that came before Naruto's, and they had become renowned for their teamwork as two-thirds of the Ino-Shika-Cho trio of that generation. However, their position in the series didn't make them bulletproof.

Their deaths still came as a bit of a shock. They were helping coordinate the Allied Shinobi Forces in the Fourth Great Ninja War until the Ten-Tailed Beast realized where they were communicating plans from. The Ten-Tails launched an attack at their headquarters, and Shikaku and Inoichi both knew they didn't have time to make a getaway. So, they sent out final orders, said farewell to their children, and accepted their fates.

14 Zabuza Momochi (Resurrected)

Zabuza Momochi was the first main antagonist of Naruto and died at the end of the "Land of Waves" arc. However, both Zabuza and his protege, Haku, were resurrected by Kabuto's Edo Tensei jutsu. Neither Zabuza nor Haku were in control of their actions at this point, and they made it known to their foes, Kakashi and Might Guy, that they were at peace and wanted to return.

This, along with Zabuza's genuine concern and respect for Kakashi, Naruto, and the rest of Team 7, is what made Zabuza's second death shocking. One would think that he would have a grudge against Team 7 over the circumstances of his own demise, but he instead showed concern for them and even happiness in learning that Naruto was living a good life.

13 Shishui Uchiha

Shisui Uchiha died years before the events of Naruto. He was close friends with Itachi Uchiha, and he was one of the few Uchiha completely against the planned coup against Konoha. He had one of his Sharingan Eyes stolen by Danzo, who later pushed for Itachi to wipe out the Uchiha.

In the end, Shishui couldn't handle what was becoming of the Uchiha Clan. He gave his Mangekyo Sharingan to Itachi, and Shishui took his own life. In this case, it's more the manner of Shisui's death than the actual occurrence that made it so shocking. It was tragic and downright heartbreaking.

12 Kimmimaro Kaguya

Kimmimaro Kaguya was one of Orochimaru's most powerful followers at the time, and he was the head of the Sound Five. When Sasuke fled Konoha to learn from Orochimaru, Kimmimaro helped ensure that Sasuke would be able to make his journey without being taken back home. This lead to Kimmimaro facing down Rock Lee and Gaara of the Sand.

Kimmimaro's Kekkei Genkai made him an immensely powerful foe, and the audience learns of Kimmimaro's tragic backstory, including his fatal congenital disease. Despite that, it looked like he was going to kill Gaara and Rock Lee until that disease killed Kimmimaro right before he could land the killing blow.

11 Gaara Of The Sand

Gaara's death came at the beginning of Naruto: Shippuden after he was kidnapped by Deidara and Sasori of the Akatsuki. They extracted the One-Tailed Shukaku from Gaara, and the process killed him.

This was shocking, as so much had gone into showing Gaara's reform. Plus, he was the Kazekage of the Hidden Sand Village now, and he was a fan-favorite. Of course, the audience knows now that the death didn't last. Chiyo, another shinobi from the Sand Village, gave her life to heal Gaara and bring him back from the dead.

10 Kakashi Hatake

One of the most popular characters in the entire Naruto series, Kakashi Hatake was met with the cruel fate of death during the Pain arc. With Deva Path showing up in search of Naruto, it was up to Kakashi to stop him, and he nearly pulled it off. However, Kakashi fell short and ended up paying with his life.

Thankfully for the fans, he was reanimated towards the end of the arc when Nagato Uzumaki used the Rinne Rebirth technique, otherwise, he would've been a lot higher up the list.

9 Haku

One of the first few characters to die in Naruto, Haku fought against Team 7 during the battle of Tazuna's Bridge. While fighting against Naruto, he foresaw the danger that Kakashi posed to Zabuza, his benefactor.

Throwing his body in harm's way, Haku died a premature death despite being only a child, shocking most of the fans and giving them a taste of what Naruto was all about at the same time. Although Haku was reanimated in the series, later on, he faced the same fate of getting pierced by Kakashi's Raikiri.

8 Konan

After having left the Akatsuki for good, nobody expected Konan to appear in the story for quite some time. However, Obito saw to it that Konan was disposed of right away. The two engaged in a fight in which Konan emerged victorious and successfully managed to kill Obito, only for him to use Izanagi and take her by surprise.

RELATED: Naruto: 5 Heroes Of The 4th Great Ninja War (& 5 Villains)

Not only did Obito surprise Konan but the entire fandom as well. Konan ended up dying in an excruciatingly painful manner while Obito proceeded to take Nagato's Rinnegan and use it for his own good.

7 Hiruzen Sarutobi

The death of the Third Hokage of Konoha remains to be one of the most shocking ones we've seen in the series. This is largely because nobody expected the Chunin Exams to turn into a mess where Orochimaru fought against the Third. With a powerful barrier erected by the Sound Four, it was either do or die or Hiruzen Sarutobi.

He ended up dying, but he took away Orochimaru's arms with him in the process. The death of Hiruzen Sarutobi marked the end of an era for Konoha and left the village reeling as they lacked a proper leader until quite some time.

6 Asuma Sarutobi

One of Konohagakure's elite Jonin, Asuma Sarutobi met his demise during the Hidan and Kakuzu arc of Naruto Shippuden. With Team 10 stepping into action after a long time, hardly anyone could've seen Asuma's death coming. The entire fandom was taken by surprise when Hidan actually managed to kill him as not only was he the leader of Team 10 but also the son of the former Hokage.

Asuma's death was crucial to the development of his students, however. Shikamaru, Choji, and Ino pulled through and saw to it that their teacher was avenged by the end of the arc, thanks to help from Kakashi Hatake and Naruto Uzumaki.

5 Madara Uchiha

Madara Uchiha was one of the main antagonists of Naruto who ended up dying in the Fourth Great Ninja War. Although being an antagonist means you'll die most of the time, Madara's death was shocking in every way.

Right when the Uchiha was at the peak of his powers, Zetsu struck and turned him into a vessel for Kaguya Otsutsuki. With Kaguya's defeat, Madara Uchiha was released from her grasp and he went on to die alongside the other reanimated shinobi from his era, such as his war buddy Hashirama Senju.

4 Obito Uchiha

Just like Madara, Obito's death was rather strange. After having a change of heart, thanks to Naruto Uzumaki, Obito could fight right until the end and help Kakashi build a new era after the war. Surprisingly, he wasn't given the opportunity as he ended up dying at the hands of Kaguya Otsutsuki towards the end of the Ninja War.

RELATED: Naruto: 5 Reasons Jiraiya Should Have Been Hokage (& 5 Why He Shouldn't Have Been)

To Obito, the act of shielding Naruto with his body was like an act of redemption. However, as fans, we were left with a bitter taste in our mouths. Truly, Kishimoto left all of us shocked with the sudden death of Obito Uchiha.

3 Itachi Uchiha

Yes, everyone knew right from the beginning that Itachi Uchiha had to die. He was the detestable elder brother of Sasuke who murdered their entire clan. With that being said, Itachi's death came as shock to the fans as Sasuke had well and truly lost the battle.

With the revelation of how Itachi actually intended for this to happen, his death got an even bigger meaning, and to date, it leaves the fans shaking when it is mentioned.

2 Neji Hyuga

Neji's death is unarguably one of the most shocking ones we've seen in the series to date. The Hyuga prodigy ended up dying in the Fourth Great Ninja War while trying to shield Hinata Hyuga from the Ten-Tails' attack.

Never in a million years did any fan see this coming, but at the end of the day, Neji lay dead in a pool of blood. Needless to say, this was probably the most forced death we've seen in the series as the reason behind it was to strengthen the bond of Naruto and Hinata.

1 Jiraiya

As expected, Jiraiya's death is the most surprising death that we've seen in Naruto. Hints about his death were dropped right from when he left Konoha on a dangerous mission but nobody believed that Kishimoto would actually have the gall to kill off Jiraiya.

Well, as it turns out, he did. Jiraiya met his end at the hands of his student, Nagato Uzumaki. His death left visible scars on Naruto Uzumaki. However, he learned from it and made sure to do what Jiraiya would've wanted him to do.

Naruto: 10 Worst Things Hiruzen Sarutobi Has Done

The Third Hokage has been leading the village of Konoha for a long time. As a young man, he proved himself to be the perfect candidate. His teacher was the Second Hokage and handpicked him to take over the position. When Hiruzen Sarutobi chooses to retire, he decided Minato Namikaze should take over his position although the death of Minato forced him to come out of retirement.

RELATED: 10 Naruto Plot Holes That Were Never Resolved

His long stint as the Hokage forced him to make some horrible decisions. Despite being remembered for his immense wisdom, he made a number of questionable choices when he was working as the leader of his village.

10 He Didn't Take Asuma Or Konohamaru's Feelings Into Consideration

Hiruzen may have been considered an amazing Hokage, but he had a more strained relationship with the members of his family. He had a falling out with his son, Asuma, that lasted past Hiruzen's death. His grandson is so overlooked that Hiruzen ends up the victim of a series of failed assassination attempts.

While Naruto passes off Hiruzen's grandson as a joke, the interactions help show how Hiruzen treated his family. Hiruzen didn't take Asuma or Konohamaru's feelings or thoughts into consideration. He was too busy running the village to care about his family.

9 Despite The Darkness That Existed Inside Orochimaru, Hiruzen Continued To Train Him

Orochimaru was one of three young ninja Hiruzen was assigned to teach. Hiruzen saw a lot of himself in Orochimaru. As a youth, Orochimaru showed a lot of the genius and ingenuity that made Hiruzen famous.

Despite the darkness that existed inside the young man, Hiruzen continued to train him. Hiruzen would recognize that Orochimaru would make a poor choice for a successor to the Hokage. If he had recognized that sooner, he would have saved the village a lot of problems in the future.

8 He Allowed Young Children To Take Part In The Deadly Chunin Exams

When Team 7 signed up to take the Chunin Exams, they might have assumed it would be similar to the tests they took at school. They would be wrong. The Chunin Exams were shrouded in mystery and darkness.

RELATED: Naruto: Every Battle From The Chunin Exams Arc, Ranked From Worst To Best

There was danger lurking around every corner during the Chunin Exams. Young ninja, like Naruto, were pitted against more experienced ninja from other villages. The Chunin Exams were a deadly ordeal, and Hiruzen allowed young children to take part in this trial.

7 He Didn't Keep His Promise To Minato & Kushina About Naruto

Naruto's parents died on the very day he was born. Minato died in part due to his efforts to protect Konoha and its citizens. As they were dying, they made Hiruzen promise to protect Naruto and regard him as a hero. Hiruzen did put forth an effort to have the village view Naruto as a hero.

After all, Naruto had lost so much. However, Hiruzen didn't do much to provide for the young orphan. Naruto grew up with nothing, knowing nothing about the parents who loved him so much. The village did practically nothing for the child of one of its former leaders, a leader who died protecting the village. Surely Hiruzen could have done something to better provide for Naruto.

6 He Allowed The Treatment Of The Uchiha Clan To Worsen Under His Leadership

After the Nine-Tails attack, the Uchiha were left holding the bag. With their Sharingan abilities, someone from the Uchiha Clan could have easily controlled Kurama. It turns out one of the clan's members were responsible for the attack, but the Uchiha didn't know that.

The clan was forced to segregate from the rest of the village. The clan members were kept under close observation so that they would never again rise up against the village. The Uchiha became increasingly angry at their treatment and eventually choosing to rise up against the village. Hiruzen allowed the treatment of the Uchiha to worsen under his leadership.

5 He Increased Tension Within The Village By Selecting Minato As His Successor

Hiruzen chooses Minato to become the next Hokage. That decision ruffled a few feathers; some didn't like the fact that Hiruzen chose someone so young to become the next leader; The Uchiha felt slighted by the choice of someone outside their clan; Danzo felt overlooked once again.

The choice resulted in some rising tensions that partially turned Konoha into a powder keg. The politics of the situation might have existed no matter who Hiruzen chose. There may have been a better choice or a way to smooth over tensions. Still, Hiruzen didn't make the village feel cohesive with some of his choices.

4 His Death Reflected Poorly On The Organization Of The Village

On some level, Hiruzen chooses to die. When he was pitted against the two previous Hokage and Orochimaru, he chose to use a technique that would end his own life. Someone as smart and skilled as Hiruzen should be able to come up with a better plan.

He left behind a village in a poor state. There was no clear successor to take over his role. After Minato's death, he never chose another person to lead the village after he died. His death made the village look weak. Better planning on his part would have made a transition period better.

3 He Couldn't Stop Orochimaru & Allowed Him To Escape

When people began disappearing in Konoha, Hiruzen began to investigate. To his disgust, his favorite student was behind the disappearances. Hiruzen would find out that Orochimaru had been experimenting on people.

RELATED: Naruto: 10 Ways Orochimaru Could Have Won

Hiruzen was forced to confront Orochimaru, but he couldn't make himself bring the criminal to justice. Hiruzen allowed Orochimaru to escape. This decision would allow all of Orochimaru's future actions, which would eventually facilitate Hiruzen's own death and Sasuke's defection. One small action would cause a lot of problems for Konoha.

2 He Didn't Stop Danzo's Corrupt Actions

Hiruzen had grown up with Danzo and considered the man one of his oldest friends. Danzo was always jealous of Hiruzen's skill and was desperate to gain power. Danzo wanted to become Hokage but was always passed over.

Danzo's jealousy and desperation for power would cause a lot of issues for Konoha. His decisions caused division in the village. He was directly responsible for the deaths of the entire Uchiha Clan. Despite all this, Hiruzen didn't hold Danzo responsible for his actions. Danzo was allowed to remain free and continued to manipulate events.

1 He Let Danzo Create Root Despite How Immoral It Was

In a scene exclusive to the anime, Hiruzen is shown giving permission to Danzo to start the organization known as Root. Danzo held the rights to exclusively run the organization however he saw fit. Without any additional oversight, Danzo was allowed to do whatever he wanted to Root's members.

A lot of Root's members were taken from their families and clans. These individuals were intensely trained and most members valued loyalty to Danzo above anything else. They would remain loyal to him no matter what else was happening.

Naruto: Who Are The 8 Hokages In The Series?

The Naruto franchise has always centered on its titular character's eagerness to leave behind a grand legacy and become a great ninja, primarily through his ultimate goal of becoming Hokage. In the village of Konohagakure, the Hokage is the primary political leader, with all of the power and responsibility that position entails.

RELATED: Naruto: 5 DCEU Characters Who Would Make A Great Hokage (& 5 Who Wouldn’t)

Throughout the anime and manga series, as well as its continuation Boruto, there have been a total of seven official Hokage referenced in Konoha's history, as well as one notable Hokage candidate with a brief reign of power. Three of these Hokages were dead prior to the start of the series, but all of them have had a great impact on the story and characters of Naruto, while also being impressive ninjas in their own right.

8 Hashirama Senju - First Hokage

Konohagakure was founded by friendly rivals Madaraa Uchiha and Hashirama Senju, with the latter becoming the first Hokage in village history. Hashirama's dream of world peace was a guiding principle throughout Konoha's history, and his position of power comes from his renown as the "God of Shinobi," one of the strongest ninjas in the franchise.

Notably, Hashirama wanted Madara to be the first Hokage, but his brother Tobirama Senju insisted upon a democratic election that led to Hashirama's selection. Although he had many abilities at his disposal, Hashirama was most known for his Wood Release technique that allowed him to manipulate wood and plants. Hashirama would go on to name Tobirama as his successor before his death, and later would be temporarily resurrected by Sasuke Uchiha and Orochimaru.

7 Tobirama Senju - Second Hokage

Following Hashirama's death, his brother, Tobirama Senju, was inaugurated as the second Hokage in Konoha's history. Tobirama's time as Hokage was transformative, creating many institutions in the village like the Academy and the Anbu special forces squad, while also placing emphasis on village loyalty over clan loyalty.

The Uchiha clan resisted this shift in ideology, beginning the fateful divide between their clan and Konoha leadership. Almost as powerful as his brother, Tobirama was capable of using many ninja techniques, although he was most known for his Water Release mastery, as well as his invention of the Flying Thunder God Technique. He was resurrected temporarily alongside the other deceased Hokage during the Fourth Shinobi World War.

6 Hiruzen Sarutobi - Third Hokage

A student of both previous Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi is known across the ninja world for his versatile power and ability with his signature staff, inheriting Hashirama's nickname "God of Shinobi." Hiruzen was appointed to the Hokage position by Tobirama shortly before his death. The Third Hokage was known for his benevolent leadership style, which he attempted to balance by allowing Danzō Shimura to lead the ruthless Root organization.

RELATED: Naruto: 10 Reasons Shikamaru Would Make A Great Hokage

As Hokage, Hiruzen also took on the training of Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade, hoping that Orochimaru would succeed him as Hokage, but ultimately deciding on Minato Namikaze (a student of Jiraiya's) as his successor upon retirement. After Minato's death, Hiruzen took up the Hokage office again, dying in battle against Orochimaru during the invasion of Konoha in one of the anime's most rewatchable episodes. Later, he was temporarily resurrected by Orochimaru and Sasuke during the Fourth Shinobi World War.

5 Minato Namikaze - Fourth Hokage

When Hiruzen retired, he chose Minato Namikaze, student of Jiraiya and eventual teacher of Kakashi Hatake, Obito Uchiha, and Rin Nohara, as his successor. Notably, during his time as Hokage, Minato and Kushina Uzumaki had a child, Naruto Uzumaki, on the same night that the Nine-Tailed Fox attacked Konoha.

Minato fought off the Nine-Tailed Fox, which had previously been sealed within Kushina, ultimately sealing it in his newborn son before dying. His incredible powers in battle netted him the nickname "Konoha's Yellow Flash," and included his mastery over the Flying Thunder God Technique and the creation of his signature Rasengan, which his son would go on to master. He was the last Hokage temporarily resurrected by Orochimaru and Sasuke during the Fourth Shinobi World War.

4 Tsunade - Fifth Hokage

The only female Hokage in Naruto is Tsunade, a former student of Hiruzen and peer of Jiraiya and Orochimaru who is known for her strength and mastery of healing abilities. She is the granddaughter of the first Hokage Hashirama Senju and his wife Mito Uzumaki, as well. Notably, her brother Nawaka and late lover Dan previously had ambitions of becoming Hokage, which endears her to the ambitious Naruto.

Tsunade reluctantly becomes Hokage after Hiruzen's death, needing to be convinced by Jiraiya to take on the role, but she remains in the office for the majority of the series. Her reign is considered bountiful for Konoha, despite the many challenges she faces and the fact that she is temporarily put in a coma after Pain attacks. Notably, Tsunade also appoints her apprentice and Dan's niece, Shizune, as an assistant, a position that she has remained in for future Hokage.

3 Danzō Shimura - Sixth Hokage Candidate

Although he was never an official Hokage, Danzō Shimura is notorious for his ruthless reign as the Sixth Hokage candidate when Tsunade was out of commission following Pain's attack on Konoha. Danzō's history extends back before the beginning of the series, when he created the Anbu subdivision Root, known for its unscrupulous and ruthless tactics.

RELATED: Naruto: 10 Villains Fans Love

Although he always had the village's best interests in mind, Danzō was a ruthless leader and sometimes an evil villain who believed both Tsunade and Hiruzen had previously led Konoha into a state of weakness that he intended to fix. A fearsome ninja, Danzō was skilled at many jutsu and most known for his several Sharingan eyes along his arm, which was also imbued with Hashirama's DNA. At the Kage Summit, Danzō represented Konoha and called for Sasuke's execution, although he died in battle against Sasuke and Tobi.

2 Kakashi Hatake - Sixth Hokage

At the end of Naruto's run, Tsunade retired from the role of Hokage following the Fourth Shinobi World War, naming Naruto's teacher and Minato's student Kakashi as the Sixth Hokage. Known for his Sharingan eye and mastery of lightning-based jutsu, Kakashi is a powerful ninja whose ideology is centered on cooperation to build a better future for Konoha.

Kakashi's previous service to Konoha includes his time as an Anbu agent and his close relationship as an advisor to Tsunade during her time in office. Although he is initially overwhelmed by taking on the role of Hokage, Tsunade helps ease him into it, and his reign is focused on building a better world for the future, specifically Naruto's generation. At the beginning of Boruto, Kakashi has retired as Hokage and has named his former student Naruto as the Seventh Hokage.

1 Naruto Uzumaki - Seventh Hokage

The only Hokage to be inaugurated after the end of Naruto's initial run, Naruto Uzumaki himself is the Seventh Hokage and the only Hokage of Boruto's run. As the son of Minato and student of Kakashi, Naruto is primed to achieve his lifelong dream of becoming Hokage, as he is seen as one of the strongest ninjas in the world following his role in the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Upon Kakashi's retirement, he bequeaths the office of Hokage to Naruto, who has more than proven himself as a powerful ninja and the "Hero of the Hidden Leaf." This master of Shadow Clone Jutsu and Rasengan has had a challenging reign as Hokage, much like Tsunade's, with enemies like the Ōtsutsuki Clan and Kara creating problems. It is unknown who will succeed Naruto as Hokage, but some prime candidates include his friend and protégé Konohamaru Sarutobi (who is also Hiruzen's grandson) and his children, Boruto and Himawari.
