Where Did The Stingray Bike Go? Remember Them?

The inventor of the Stingray bike, Al Fritz, passed away recently. Probably no single bike sold faster and created more buzz than the Stingray. The Schwinn company produced the bike between and and sold over 40, Sting-Rays in alone. They would have sold more if the company hadn’t run out of inch tires. But where did the Stingray bike go? Do you remember them?

Roots of Stingray

&#;Every single BMX bike on the track and trails can trace it&#;s roots directly to the first Stingray built by Al Fritz in the winter of &#; said USA-BMX magazine.&#; After the success of the Stingray bike, Al Fritz went on to become vice president of Schwinn Bicycles and was instrumental in developing Schwinn’s first ten-speed road bikes.

A Silly Idea

The Sting-Ray was conceived when Fritz traveled to California where kids were modifying bikes to look like suped-up, chopper-style motorcycles. Fritz returned to Schwinn&#;s Chicago headquarters with the concept. When he presented the new design to Schwinn, they though it was a silly idea. Fortunately for Schwinn, Fritz talked them into building it.

The Stingray Bike

The Stingray bike represented freedom. It was rebellious. It was status and a way of life. Think of the Stingray as a low riding BMX with ape-hanger handlebars and a banana/bucket seat. It was the first &#;muscle bike&#; and was in fact likened to the spirit – if not the power – of a Chevelle SS

The High-End Stingray Bike

A gear shifter mounted on the top tube was one of the defining features of the high-end Stingrays. Schwinn called it the Stik-Shift model. With the Detroit muscle-car race at full throttle, Schwinn took it a step further in and issued the Hemi of Sting-Rays &#; the Krate. A inch front wheel on a springer fork, inch rear wheel with a wide slick tire and a chrome “sissy” bar mounted on shock absorbers gave the Krate the stance of a top fuel dragster. Just to ensure no one missed the point, advertisers depicted the bike on a drag strip.

Not Just For Kids

As the style developed though so did the weight. It took a lot of effort for a child to motivate the 50lb mass of the high-end Stingray. The price tag was hefty too with the five-speed models starting at $90 in the US – or roughly $ in today&#;s dollars. The Krate was for cyclists who were serious about their rides.

Bare Bones Stingray

Kids typically bought the stripped down Stingrays that were cheaper and lighter. Or your parents might have bought you one of the many competitors’ bikes, such as Huffy’s Penguin Dragster, Rail or Slingshot, a Rollfast Skoot, Sears Screamer or from Britain, the Raleigh Chopper.

An original Krate could be worth $1,, according to Stephen Komarinetz, a Sting-Ray collector in Uncasville, Connecticut. If you can get your hands on one, an original, rare Grey Ghost Stingray will fetch upwards of $4, Bidding on Ebay has become a competitive sport for collectors of the Grey Ghost and other original Stingrays.

Stingray restoration is alive and well in the online community with ample support. One well-known source of Stingray parts such as refurbished seats and other pieces can be obtained from Pete Aronsen, whose Hyper-Formance company in Arizona supplies Schwinn Sting-Ray and Krate parts, with fenders, tires, and handgrips coming from Chinese-built Schwinn Krate models. If originality is important to you, it should be noted that a market for counterfeit Krates has emerged and collectors are cautioned.

Options Abound

You might have thought that the contemporary mountain bike was innovative, but the Stingray had full-suspension and disc brakes options about a decade or more before they were placed on a mountain bike. Also referred to as &#;saddle struts&#; on the rear, and a coil spring or &#;springer front&#;, the Stingray was probably the first real full-suspension bike. In fact, the options were almost unlimited.

  • Stingray is the basic, bare-bones, stripped down single-speed bike with inch wheels
  • Stingray Delux added fenders and maybe whitewalls, may have had a reverse-screen chainguard

The chopper style handlebars and the banana seats ARE cycling for cyclists born in the &#;s but why they disappeared is a mystery. If you&#;ve never lifted a wheely before in your life, the Stingray can hold one for blocks. The coaster brake can be locked up and because you&#;re low to the ground and the seat is so versatile, you could skid sideways safely on almost any surface. They were reliable and could do distances. They had it all.

The Spirit of Americana

Today&#;s bikes are targeted for each discipline whether it be dirt track BMX, mountain bikes, or road bikes. The performance of each type is superior to the Stingray, but nothing combined the spirit of cycling or brought more bikers together than the iconic Stingray. Sting-Ray, known as "the bike with the sports car look" has revolutionized cycling since it was introduced by Schwinn in It has won the praise and captured the imagination of youngsters of all ages across the U.S.A.

This is the fun bike that features a short frame, high rise handlebars and long, bucket shaped saddle. This design gives the rider an exciting combination of features for quick maneuvers, fast starts and short radius turns.

The Stingray was introduced through the sales ad to the right.

Little did Schwinn know then that they were introducing what would become a wildly popular bike that would sell like wildfire. The Schwinn Sting-ray became Schwinns best selling bikes alost overnight. Its dramatically different design was new fresh and modeled after the way many kids were refiting and customizing their own bikes in southern California.

California kids had started to take old inch bicycles and customize them into motorcycle looking sport bikes. They were replacing the factory seats and handlebars and using instead "Solo Polo" or "banana" seats and tall "butterfly" type bars. This California fad was noticed by Al Fritz the director of research and development for Schwinn, and he reacted very quickly, making a prototype that was mostly laughed at by the Schwinn upper management.

They wouldn't laugh long the entire first production run sold out in a matter of months and they were not able to make more because of supply problems with the tires.

Over 45, bikes were sold in just a couple of months after they were introduced. Obviously Schwinn spent the rest of that year making enough Sting-rays for the next year, when sales become even larger.

If you were lucky enough to grow up without all the crap of today that sucks our kid&#;s time and energy&#; video games, the internet, satellite t.v., then you might remember what it was like to ride your bike all day long with your buddies&#; crafting makeshift ramps, making up crazy stunts and tricks, and just having a honest-to-goodness blast cruising the streets until Mom called you in.  For a lot of us, it was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with wheels.  The Schwinn Sting-Ray was a two-wheeled blacktop beast back then&#; especially with the on-the-frame gear shift and a fat rear slick.  It was the only bike that mattered&#; before the BMX madness struck, that is.

I feel sorry for these fat, lazy, spoiled kids of today&#; wasting away in front of their t.v. screens and computer monitors.  Man&#; get outside you chubby little brats!  Seriously&#; do you think kids are better off today?  No friggin&#; way.  They wouldn&#;t last two seconds back in the day.  It&#;s time to throw all that crap out and lock &#;em outside.  A little road rash would definitely do the buggers good.

Schwinn Sting-Ray: History Of The Chopper-Inspired Bike Every Kid Wanted

With its banana seat and "ape hanger" handlebars, Schwinn's Sting-Ray bicycle looks a bit dorky today, but if you were a kid in the '60s and '70s it was the bike to have. The sales figures don't lie -- this was a product that exploded onto the market, becoming not just successful the year it launched, but dominant. The Sting-Ray, with its slight resemblance to a motorcycle, was a step toward the bikes kids would really want a decade later -- BMX bikes. Unfortunately for Schwinn, the clairvoyance that guided their development of the Sting-Ray deserted them when BMX began to trend.

Schwinn was formed in by German immigrant Ignaz Schwinn and his partner, Adolph Arnold. When Schwinn entered the bicycle market, his goal was to make the most advanced bicycles and in , 1 in 4 bikes sold in America was a Schwinn, however by about a century after their founding, because of several forces, the company went under and declared bankruptcy. However, in the ‘60s, they did have an interesting surge with the introduction of a new design inspired by trends in California.

Schwinn introduced its new design, the Sting-ray in The Sting-Ray, with its high handlebars, short frame, and long bucket shaped saddle, was the bike that some called “the bike with the sports car look.” Indeed, in some ways, it handled like a sports car, allowing riders to turn in a short radius and perform quick maneuvers. And the Sting-Ray as well as its competitors allowed riders to pop a wheelie and ride it for longer than a regular bike because of its smaller rims. The smooth tires were perfect for skid outs.

The unusual design was based on the ways that people in southern California were modifying their bikes. The kids there had been replacing the factory seats on their ordinary street bikes with banana seats and modifying the handlebars to be tall bars, transforming them to look like motorcycle sport bikes. Al Fritz, a welder who moved up into management took notice of the adaptations and created a prototype of the Sting-Ray.

A Huge Success

Management initially scoffed at the trend, but began producing the bikes, selling them at $50 each. the first run of bikes sold out quickly, and Schwinn sold 46, that year. To put that number in perspective, Schwinn sold about 10, of their other best-selling bikes annually. They would have sold more but ran out of the tires needed for the design. Within two years, other bicycle companies were producing models based on the design, and 60% of all bicycles on the market looked like the Sting-Ray.

They Move Beyond The Basic Model

Although the company began producing the bike in , it first appeared in the Schwinn catalog in In , Schwinn updated the design, adding slick rear tires, which they advertised as the types of tires seen on drag racers and track cars, and the tires would give the bikes more road surface than any other bike. During the first five years of the Sting-Ray’s 15 year run, according to the LA Times, Schwinn sold 2 million of the model.

By , there were six models of the Sting-Ray for boys and three for girls, including the originals. The Ram’s Horn Fastback Sting-Ray had a 5-speed stick shift and “ram’s horn” handlebars that curled forward. It also had the lightweight slik rear tire and a nylon sports touring front tire. While bike gears are typically on the handlebars, the stik shift on the Fastback was on the crossbar. One of the girls’ models was the Slik Chik, which featured a flower decorated basket. The Sting-Ray also came in smaller versions for younger kids. In , Schwinn released a tandem bike, the Mini-Twinn which they called “Sting-Ray styled”. Production of this bike lasted for just one year.


Resurrecting A Classic

Just as the Sting-Ray arose from a modified bike, the Sting-Ray itself was modified to become the predecessor to the BMX bikes. In the s, sales of BMX bikes began to outpace the Sting-Ray, but Sting-Rays continued to be produced. In , Schwinn produced a BMX, but did not corner that market. Fifty years after the first Sting-Ray was produced, in , after the death of Al Fritz, who had created the prototype, the company announced the limited release of chrome plated commemorative Sting-Ray bikes. In , they released a limited edition reproduction of the Grey Ghost.

Schwinn recently announced the limited release of commemorative “Fritz Fifty” chrome-plated Sting-Ray bikes.

So what?

That’s a good question.

There are some obvious simple answers here: it’s been five decades since the Sting-Ray debuted, so you’ve got the obvious year Anniversary rationale. That’s always worth a re-issue right there. Al Fritz, the Sting-Ray’s inventor, also passed away this year, so the bike is a bit of a tribute to the man who created what has often been cited as America’s best-selling bicycle.

But let’s stop there for a second: America’s best-selling bicycle. How did that happen?

After getting nearly taken out by a Japanese mortar in World War II, Al Fritz came home to the states and got a job at Schwinn as a welder. Fritz eventually worked his way off the floor and into management. In the early 60s, word spread from Los Angeles that kids were modifying old Schwinn frames—bolting on Ape Hanger bars and adding other accouterments from early choppers. Fritz made the kind of leap of logic which seems so obvious in retrospect, but is often overlooked at the time. The logic goes like this: If my customers are busting their asses to modify my product, wouldn’t it just be easier if I sold them what they wanted?

There was a time when dressing like this didn't get you an ass-whuppin'. Those times are long gone. The Sting-Ray was the epitome of cool back then.

Thus, in , Schwinn cranked out a run of Sting-Rays, despite the fact that no one at Schwinn, aside from Fritz, thought the homely children’s chopper would be a success. The Sting-Rays flew out of bike shops— of them at fifty bucks a pop. For comparison’s sake, at the time the Sting-Ray debuted, Schwinn generally moved about 10, units of their best selling models each year.

Schwinn would have actually sold more Sting-Rays that first year, but they couldn’t get enough inch rubber tires from Uniroyal (their tire supplier) to slap on the things. They rectified that problem in short order. Within two years Sting-Ray-esque bikes (other companies quickly followed Schwinn’s lead) accounted for a staggering 60 percent of bike sales in the United States.

How many Schwinn Sting-Rays eventually wound up in people’s homes? At the time of Fritz’ passing, the LA Times reported that two million Sting-Rays were sold during the first five years of the bike’s year model run. Millions and millions of the things prowled America’s cul de sacs and dirt lots. No matter how you slice it, it’s a hell of a lot of banana seats and ape hangers.

None of this probably comes as a shock if you are anywhere between the ages of 30 and If you fit within that demographic, you’ve probably ridden one of these things at some point in your life. The ridiculously-easy-to-wheelie Sting-Ray also laid the foundation for BMX. As the sixties gave way to the `70s, modified Sting-Rays served as some of the first BMX bikes. Clearly, it was only a matter of time before someone realized that there had to be a better mule for flogging on dirt, but still, when you look at a Sting-Ray, you’re looking at the foundation for dirt riding. A lot of those kids on Sting-Rays became BMX riders and, in short order, went on to become the first generation of mountain bikers.

Happy 50th to the Sting-Ray and a nod of respect to the recently-departed Al Fritz. You may not have met, much less known, Al Fritz, but the man had an impact on anyone who rides the dirt today.
