Research on Fuel Pump for Chevrolet Cobalt

Driving a car is effortless when everything works. Your Cobalt is fine as long as the engine gets a steady flow of fuel and everything else is normal. On the road, you probably never notice that the fuel pump is running, unless it malfunctions. Gasoline is usually stored towards the rear of the vehicle. This pump is what enables it to go where it's needed. A faulty fuel pump can seriously affect your ride. The problem won't go away unless you replace the device. In fact, the problem will only get worse, until the engine won't run.

Failing Fuel Pump Symptoms

A sputtering or hard starting engine is a clear sign the fuel pump is going bad. When the pump starts to go, it will not provide the same amount of pressure it once did. As a result, the engine will have to crank more to start, and it might take a few turns of the ignition key before it gets going. That's one sign you may need 2006 Chevy Cobalt fuel pump module replacement. Another is misfires, which happen because the air/fuel ratio is affected. If the fuel pump is failing, you may also experience a loss in power and acceleration, stalling, or decreased fuel efficiency. In some cases, you might hear a whining noise coming from inside the fuel tank. The car won't start at all if the pump completely fails.

Where Is the Fuel Pump Located in a Car?

Most fuel pumps are now placed at the bottom of the fuel tank. They are submersed in liquid gasoline so they operate right from the source. This also enables gasoline to be sent to the engine under pressure, raising its boiling point and preventing it from vaporizing too soon. Fuel vapor is flammable; liquid gasoline is not. The pump can therefore operate safely. It does generate heat, but the liquid around it helps to disperse that heat and enable the pump to run cooler.

Cobalt Fuel Pump Recall

A 2008 Chevy Cobalt fuel pump recall, also affecting 2007 and 2009 model years, was issued in 2012. The risk of cracking of the supply/return port of the pump was enough to warrant concerns of fuel leaks. With that and the 2007 Chevy Cobalt fuel pump recall, dealers replaced the fuel pump module, and eliminated the chances of a fire.

Cost of Fixing Chevy Cobalt Fuel Pump Problems

The price for replacing a fuel pump involves quite a bit of labor. You'll likely have to shell out $494 to $654 for a 2006 Cobalt pump. The fuel filter is often replaced at the same time. Factors affecting the final cost include the type of car, price of the part, and local taxes plus fees the shop charges you. There are several of these you don't have control over. One, however, is where you buy the fuel pump from. If you get it from PartsGeek.com, you can save a great deal because all of our auto parts and accessories are reduced in price.
