Coming soon and you are invited

The Albuquerque Chapter of the American Sewing Guild (ASG) invites you to attend our May meeting.  This is free and open to all fiber artists.  We are hosting a guest speaker, Julianne Bramson, co-author of the book “Bias-Cut Blueprints: A Geometric Method for Clothing Design and Construction.”

Julianne began sewing in Junior High School and has continued ever since.  In college, a class on the History of Fashion got her attention.  She became especially drawn to the vintage designs of the 1930’s and in particular the work of French designer, Madeleine Vionnet.  Vionnet is best known for elegant Grecian-style dresses and for popularizing the bias cut within the fashion world.  She eschewed corsets and structured garments in favor of body-centric, flowing designs.  Think of those body-skimming, sensual gowns worn by Marlene Dietrich, Katharine Hepburn, and Greta Garbo.  Vionnet’s fashion house operated in Paris from 1912 until 1939.  Julianne’s work is based on Vionnet’s “Spiral Dress” which is formed from a simple bias tube.

Our meeting will be held on Zoom, May 13th at 6:00 pm.  Julianne will be providing handouts for you to have before the meeting. In order to receive the Zoom invitation and handouts, please RSVP to Kathy Morris [email protected] no later than Friday, May 7th.

Are you tired of staying at home?  Well, that’s an easy answer—YES.  Have you run out of sewing supplies yet? I will possibly be here for another 5 years!  But just in case you need supplies, here is a list of our locally owned sewing/fabric stores with their current hours and operations.

My Sewing Day in Spain

Located just under two miles from Interstate 40, this wonderful shop is co-owned by Suzanne Kelly and Steve Hamlin. They were featured in Quilt Sampler Magazine’s Spring/Summer 2019 issue, and it is easy to see why. Be careful of Google Maps – it will bring you to the wrong side of the building.

The shop features modern fabrics ranging from Grunge in solids, dots, and stars to Kaffe Fassett, and an entire wall of blenders and solids. There are over 2,000 bolts in the store, so you are sure to find something to suit your next project. There are a lot of brights, as well as a nice selection of wide backings, not to mention Southwest fabrics and Ruby Star Society prints. If you enjoy working with wool, there are fabrics and kits available. Don’t miss the great selection of toweling! They also carry both quilting and clothing patterns.

There are samples on just about every wall, as well as some hung from the ceiling. Many have kits to go with the patterns, or you can choose your own fabrics. Don’t miss the adorable stuffed animals, complete with patterns!

Samples on the wall, rulers below – how can you go wrong? There is a great selection of rulers here, as well as Jerry’s Jelly Roll Jig. If you haven’t heard of this, there are great videos showing how to use it. It is a jig to make Jelly Roll Rugs, letting you feed both batting and fabric through at once and fold them as needed to make the fabric ball, making stitching simple. The shop also features Kimberbell Embroidery patterns, and is a Kimberbell certified shop. Hip Stich also sells and service Featherweight Sewing Machines, so if you are in the market…

You would normally need 30 to 40 minutes here, but the shop is working online only as of this writing. Please contact the shop if you are going to be in the area and see if they have been allowed to reopen yet.
