Here in the following parts, you will find 20 ways to help you resolve google backup and sync not working problems and a new method to help you transfer one cloud to other clouds without downloading and uploading. Since this article is a bit long, you can choose the method you are interested in from the following guides.

20 Fixes to Google Drive Doesn’t Sync All Files and Folders

Solution 1 – Pause and Resume Google Drive

You can try to temporarily pause its sync task especially when Google backup stuck. Then, resume its work. Then, it should rescan the source files and find out what it has missed out.

Pause Backup and Sync

Solution 2 - Restart Google Sync

Exit google drive from its system tray icon on the bottom right taskbar, then go to programs/applications in Start menu and open google drive again. It will normally looks for unsynced files and will sync missing files then.

Solution 3 – Run Google Backup App as Administrator

Manually click on Google backup software on the computer and choose to run it as Administrator could help with Google Drive does not sync all files.

Solution 4 - Resign in

Sometimes, when you had signed in to everything else Google on your computer, you don't even think about having to check to see if you are still signing in specifically to Drive on PC. Usually, there should be some kind of notification to tell you that you are not signing in. Thus, just sign in your account fix Google Drive doesn’t sync all files and folders problem.

Or, maybe you have multiple user accounts on a PC which have Google Drive installed (syncing for different GDrive users). If you switch users (as opposed to logging out of the first account), Google Drive refuses to sync when you switch back to the first user's account. Therefore, log off and on of each user account with GDrive installed seems to keep the GDrive syncing operational.

Besides, make sure that the account you use on the sync app is the same one you use online to view files.

Solution 5 – Reboot Machine

Solution 6 – Reinstall Backup and Sync

Uninstall it and clear folder, then reinstall with startup options etc. Maybe you should re-download its installation file form the official webpage.

Solution 7 - Change Firewall Settings

Change firewall/antivirus settings to make sure Google Drive is allowed to sync. Or, maybe you should choose another antivirus program.

Some computer optimizing software like AVG PC Tuneup will disable some applications to boost computer running speed. Thus, Google Drive might be disabled when it senses it is "not in use". This keep your files from loading and downloading. So, make sure Google Drive is always enabled.

Solution 8 – Change Windows Permission

The way google drive handles files may cause some issues with crash plan that necessitated some messing around with security permissions. There may be Windows permissions conflicts when sharing same files with different computers. To solve this problem, you may have to manually add your user to lower level directories.

If you get error messages like “You do not have permission to sync this file” or “You only have permission to view this file, so your changes cannot be synced”, you can contact the owner of the file and request the ability to edit.

Solution 9 – Switch Proxy Settings

Switch proxy settings from "Automatically detect" to "Direct connection" and move local Google Drive folder to "C:\Google Drive" should solve Google Drive doesn’t sync all files problem.

Backup and Sync Proxy Settings

Solution 10 – Mark the Un-synced Files

Select all folders (checking the checkbox in the list header) and set "More/Mark as viewed". It will start to sync them. If this doesn’t work, try to mark them as unread or add stars to them.

Solution 11 – Make Sure All Folders are Checked to Sync

If Google Drive sync complete but not from online to local, you can go to "preferences" and make sure that you have chosen “Sync everything in My Drive” instead of "sync only these folders". This makes all of your folders available for desktop access as well.

Sync Everyting in My Drive

If Google Drive does not sync all files from local to cloud, go to "Preferences" and make sure all folders you want to sync checked in “My Computer” tab.

Solution 12 – Resync All Files

1. On your computer, click Backup and Sync taskbar icon.
2. Click “View # unsyncable files”.
3. Click “Retry all”.
4. If this doesn't work, restart Google Drive sync.

Or, close the Drive on your computer, move the entire of your Google Drive contents out then reopen Drive. Go into Google Drive's Preferences and uncheck all of the folders. Then, Google Drive online will remove all the files it has synced from your computer. After it finishes, drag all contents back in. Finally, it will resync all the files to cloud.

Solution 13 – View Un-synced Files Online

Go to the web drive and use Drive viewer to view the missed files, then they will be synced to the PC. Obviously this is not a good solution when there are hundreds of files missed. Also, to find them out of thousands of files is time-consuming.

Maybe, you can just right click Google Drive in your system tray, then clicked on "Visit Google Drive on the web" to see if this get all missed files synced to cloud in one time or not.

Visit Google Drive on the Web

Solution 14 – Auto Refresh Source Folders

Solution 15 - Rename Google Drive

Go to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Drive\" and rename the "googledrivesync.exe" file to any other name like "googledrivesync123.exe". Then, rename the shortcut. Run it again and it may work.

Solution 16 – Delete Desktop.ini

For whatever reason, whenever a file fails to sync in a folder, all future additions/changes made to any files in that folder will fail to sync, until the error is cleared (which often requires deleting the file). Or, delete desktop.ini file in the root folder and also in cloud folder and restart G drive again. Since desktop.ini is a hidden file, to delete it, you may need to show hidden files first.

Note: To show hidden files, open "Windows Explorer", click on Options under the View tab and click on Change folder and search options.

Solution 17 – Insufficient Cloud Storage

You do not have enough Google storage for this file. Please buy more storage…” If Google Drive sync not complete when sync from local to cloud, it may due to there are not enough storage space in your plan to save all the source files. Thus, just upgrade your storage plan can get all files synced.

Solution 18 - Shorten File and Folder Name Length

There exists a possibility that many of the files in your Google Drive have a filename length that is too long to be used by a Microsoft OS. All Windows computers have a maximum filename length of 255 characters, meaning that if you have many layers of folders in your Google Drive it will not be able to properly sync files within deeply-layered folders. The solution to this would be to shorten file and folder names and try again.

If this is the problem, then there is not much that Google would be able to change. At this time, it would require a new OS version of Windows.

Solution 19 – For Sync between Two Computers

If you are syncing files between two local devices and use Google Drive as transit, you need to make a home group to connect the two computers. Then, you get a password on computer 1, you enter it on computer 2, and they will sync with each other.

Solution 20 - Manually Upload/Download

If all solutions above don’t work for you, I’m afraid you have to manually drag and drop local files to Google Drive on webpage. And, download directly from cloud to local.

The Common Reasons for “Google Drive File Stream Not Working” Problem

The main reasons for this error are:

  • Outdated, corrupted cached folder/files
  • No storage space on the drive
  • Blocking of features by the Firewall/Antivirus
  • Poor Internet Connectivity
  • Outdated operating system/File Stream application
  • Interference of other Google Cloud Services

Methods to Fix “Google Drive File Stream Not Working” Problem

We have a few manual ways which can help you to resolve the problem related to “Google Drive File Stream Not Working.” You can try one after the other until your issue is fixed.

  • Try Disabling Firewall and Anti-virus Programs:
Firewall and Anti-virus applications may block the Google Drive File Stream functionalities.
To check if this was the problem, just disable the installed Firewall and Anti-virus applications for some time, and check if the Google Drive file streaming resumes or not. If it does, the problem is solved. Keep it disabled until the streaming is completed.
  • Try Checking and Modifying Network Connectivity to VPN
For proper file streaming, the network connection needs to be clear and strong.
So, try checking the current internet connection and its settings. As ISPs are suspected of blocking certain services of applications, it is suggested to shift the internet connection from ISPs to VPN permanently for Google Drive file streaming.
  • Try Renaming the Google Drive File Stream Folder
The outdated or corrupted cache is a reason for the issue in Google Drive file streaming. So, it must be either deleted or renamed.
Here are the simple steps to rename the Google Drive File Stream Cached Folder.
    1. First, close the running Google Drive file stream application.
    2. Run Command Prompt as an administrator.
    3. Execute the following command.

    4. Now, look out for the folder and rename it with any name.
    5. Reboot the system once and start the Google Drive file stream application again.
    6. This time the streaming may work fine.
  • Try Updating the File Stream Application
The updates from Google are meant to improve the security and fix any bugs in the previous versions. So, the user should update the Google Drive File Stream application to the latest version if not updated yet. Then try to perform the file streaming through the latest application version.
Note: Make sure the old version of the Google Drive File Stream application is uninstalled from the Control Panel and not available on the system anymore.
  • Try updating the Operating System
Old operating system versions do not include the latest updates required for running the newly installed applications and drivers smoothly.
Get your Windows operating system updated with the latest available version (Windows 10) and then see the difference in the functioning of the Google Drive File Stream.
  • Try disabling other Instances of Google Cloud Services
Try disabling Google Backup & Sync if it is running. To disable the running Google Backup & Sync application, users can run the Task Manager on their systems, select the program, and click on the End Process option to close the application securely. Then start Google Drive File Stream and check if the synchronization is going well or not.
  • Try Saving Google Drive File Stream files Offline
To access and download the Google Drive file folder offline, follow these steps.
    1. Open the File Explorer window on your system.
    2. Move to the left panel and click on the Google Drive File Stream (G) drive to open it.
    3. Double-click on any Drive from the right panel to open it.
    4. Next, the folders or files will get retrieved from the selected Drive. Select one or multiple files/folders, right-click, and follow Drive File Stream>Available Offline.
    5. Proceed to download the selected files on your system.
  • Try Uninstalling Chrome Remote Desktop
If you are running Chrome Remote Desktop, then you should uninstall it as it does not function well with the Google Drive File Stream application, affecting its synchronization.

Go to the Control Panel on your system, click on Programs and Features, select the Chrome Remote Desktop, and click on Uninstall option.

Google Drive's Backup and Sync vs Drive File Stream

Hello Spiceheads,

We use Google Drive File Stream (GDFS) in our environment and lately we have had a lot of issues with files not appearing in GDFS that appear in Drive on Chrome. The normal fix is to delete the cache (c:\users\user\appdata\local\google\DriveFS) and have them sign back into GDFS.

This issue has happened a lot more frequently in the past few weeks and I am curious if anyone else is experiencing this as well.

These are Windows 10 machines, we have Sophos endpoint anti-virus with an exception for the G: drive. Our users have a lot of CAD files and large PDFs amongst other item types. I haven't seen any correlation between this happening an the PC events. In some cases, the issue returns just minutes after the reset.

It's a Google issue. Here's an excerpt of my support transcript:

[G Suite Support, Guillermo: it seems that you are being affected by an issue reported from some users, basically the content that you have on the cloud, drive.google.com, is not fully displayed on File Stream, there are some missing files and folders, is that correct? ]
[Fairwayboy23: That is correct ]
[G Suite Support, Guillermo: don't worry, our engineers are working in order to solve this issue as fast as possible...]
G Suite Support, Guillermo: Normally this issue is solved by itself after 48 hours, but also if you need an specific folder urgently, you just need to:

 1. Go to drive.google.com
 2. Open the folder that is not appearing on File Stream.
 3. While the folder is open, please refresh your browser.
 4. Check the folder on File Stream

Another temporary solution that we do in our environment:

1. Quit GDFS

2. Open a file explorer and navigate to the following folder:

"C:\users\[username]\appdata\local\Google\"

(You must type this in the address bar of file explorer because "appdata" is a hidden directory. Replace [username] with your computer username, e.g. "swilson".)

3. Delete the "DriveFS" folder.

4. Launch GDFS from the start menu and sign in.

We have had the issue, but only with 2 employees out of hundreds.  Coincidentally, they use Excel continuously where every other team has migrated to Sheets.  However, the issue seems like it may be "resolved".  The issue has not recurred since January 2020 in our environment

1. Open Google Drive in a web interface (for example in Chrome).

2. Go inside "Shared with me".

3. Right-click on each folder you want to see in Google Drive File Stream and choose "Create a shortcut".

4. When asked for the location of each shortcut, point to "My Drive".

Worked for me.

We haven't seen the issue in a year. Make sure your Drive File Stream application is up to date. You may have to clean house one time. Stop the app, wipe the cache under %localappdata%, then restart the app.

I just got off the chat with Google support, and this solution has not been posted anywhere, so as this is the most popular search result I will post here.

Despite clean sign-ins and cleared caches our computers were persistently limiting the displayed folders.

For incomplete file listing in Google Drive for Desktop / Filestream:

Go up one directory level from the missing folders and select the folder

Windows - Shift-Right Click -> Refresh Folder

Mac - Control-Right Click -> Refresh Folder

Hopefully this works across the board and saves everyone the hour that I spent with tech support.

Have a Great Day!

Some of our users in our org started reporting the same issue since July 16, 2021.

If users in your org are having the similiar issues recently, the below info might be relavent

I contacted googel support and the google suppor told me that

------------

I wanted to let you know that I checked this out with our dedicated team and they explained to me that they are aware of this behavior with Drive for Desktop as it seems to be a known issue; however, they are currently working on a solution and they expect the issue to be resolved with the new version of Drive for Desktop (version 50).

-------------

The google support offered a work around below:

---------------------------

Please have the user select the Shared drive or parent folder affected on the Drive for Desktop app and then he needs to press and hold the 'Shift' or 'Ctrl' key and do the right click on the folder. After that, the user needs to select the option: 'Refresh folder'. That should clear any issues with the folder and re-sync all the files and sub-folders.

-----------------------------

The impacted users in our org used the above work around and it worked for us.

Glad it helped.

Google support is really frustrating as I have jumped hoops with them by clearing cache, disconnect account, reconnect account, uninstall google drive, reinstall google drive, sending in user's googel drive log files etc ...

Eventually they gave me the workaround and I keep pushing the google support to let me know what the root cause is and at least 10 email exchanges, they finally acknowledge there are some issues with google drive and their team is working on a fix....

It's a month since the last post and I have a user reporting this issue today with version 50.0.11.0 (Intel).

It's interesting that the option to right click > refresh is not present. Maybe it was never present on the macOS version as refreshing a folder does sound Windows-like.
