Short hair for senior pictures

There are so many cute ways to style short haircuts for older women...but that doesn't mean you won't feel nervous as you prepare to take the leap. After all, trying out a new style can be intimidating! Luckily, you've landed in the right place. Here, you'll find plenty of visual inspiration for 2021—photos, ideas, and celebrity-inspired suggestions to bring with you to the salon. If you have curly hair, scroll through our list and select images that feature people with a similar texture; the same goes if you have fine hair, thick hair, or super-straight hair. But remember, haircuts aren’t one-size-fits-all: You can (and should!) expect to tweak these styles to make them work for you.

Once you start looking around at short haircuts, you’ll find that most of the options for women aged 50 and older are variations on shoulder-length cuts, bobs, and pixies. Here’s a quick rundown on the three:

Shoulder-length styles sit above the shoulder (as the name suggests) and strike the perfect balance of not-too-long and not-too-short. They're great for those who want to gradually go shorter, but aren’t necessarily committed to a big chop.

Bobs come in a range of looks, but traditionally this cut sits right at the jaw line—think 1920s flapper. Sassy!

The pixie is the shortest of the three and can also be styled many ways. For the ultimate pixie cut, channel Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday.(She's credited withpopularizing the style!)

P.S. We've also got inspiration for medium-length hairstyles for older women, plus information on fall hair color ideas, the best drugstore hair dyes to try, and even some fabulous gray hair color ideas to check out. This fall will be your best yet!

34 Flattering Short Haircuts for Older Women in 2021

Long Pixie with Side-Swept Bangs

Q&A with style creator, Jackie LeTarte
Master Stylist @ Jackie and Her Scissors, Inc. at Trim Salon in Orlando, FL

How would you describe this look?

This is a classic shape with a little more weight and length on top and a closer, tapered length on the sides. This client’s hair is very straight and thick, so it was cut with a razor for serious texture and fullness. I love this cut because it is so versatile – it can be messy and textured for a casual look or slicked down for a more refined, elegant look.

Any advice for someone considering it?

This is a great transitional cut for straighter-haired clients who want to cut their hair short but aren’t ready for a full-blown Mia Farrow pixie. The longer bangs provide a little “security blanket”, and the sides could be left longer as well. The back should always be the shortest part of any shorter haircut this gives a beautiful silhouette. Any face shape can wear short hair, and my only rule of thumb is the stronger the jawline, the longer the crown area should be for balance. There should always be a good amount of texture, more so for very thick hair to avoid the “cap” effect. A texture spray or texture powder on dry hair is usually all that is needed to style a great short hair cut!

Classic Bob for Thick Wavy Hair

classic bob for thick wavy hair

Instagram @hollythehairstylist

This look is a short A-line bob. The best thing about this look is its versatility. A waved bob is a new take on a classic haircut. It’s short, sassy, and can translate a wide age span!

When considering short haircuts for older women you need to consider a few different aspects of your daily life. (With any haircut really.) In particular with a bob, think about the amount of time you are willing to give to styling your hair.

Considering a ponytail wouldn’t be possible. A waved bob is probably the best for any texture, thickness, or wave pattern.

Starting with blow-dry, try Tigi small talk as a blow-dry cream. With curling, a 1″ curling iron is the best for bob length haircuts and Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi ginger shine spray to leave the hair with shine and a light hold.

Layered Graduated Bob

short layered graduated bob hairstyle for older ladies

Instagram @shmoakin_hair

Consider a layered graduated bob with some fun highlights to accent the textured layers. This short hair can be playful, especially with the tousled layers.

If you have very fine hair, use both Powder Dry Me and Puff Me. Using the two together creates lots of natural volume without having to tease. Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioners are always best to maintain the color and integrity of the hair.

Many different hair textures and face shapes can wear a graduated bob. It’s a very versatile style.

Blue Steel Pixie for Asian Women

Q&A with style creator, Penny
Hairstylist @ The Young American Salon in Tustin, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would best describe this style as a blue steel, disconnected pixie. My favorite aspect overall would be the creativity and unique originality involved with the entire color and haircut process. This was her first appointment with me and she really gave me the green light to explore her requests.

Consultations with new clients who wish to explore “outside the box” usually takes me about 15 minutes so that we can really touch base on their hair history and possibilities. Also, it’s not very often that I get such requests from an Asian woman over 40 years old wanting a short haircut.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

There are five products I highly recommend to maintain this style and hair/scalp integrity in between appointments. First, any client whose color service requires “on scalp” bleaching will definitely benefit from using an aloe vera aerosol spray. It is inexpensive and will help relieve any after burning sensation or discomfort.

My top pick for a protein-based shampoo is Melu by Davines, and a custom blue Fabuloso color conditioner by EVO to infuse pigment to your at-home color maintenance regimen. For styling, I’d use a few spritzes of Bona Fide’s texturizing spray before blow drying to give the hair a bit of grit. This step really helps prep the style so there is minimal use of pomade and heavy residue. Lastly, for thick Asian hair, I love Davine’s Strong Hold Dry Wax for longevity and texture, finishing with their extra strong hairspray.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this and color combination for clients who aren’t afraid of making a statement. It’s always wise to ask the client about their work environment, budget and timing to ensure that a “creative vivid” color/haircut service is right for them.

This particular style can be achieved on most hair types. We’re so fortunate that Olaplex’s technology has allowed more wiggle room to push the boundaries when it comes to aggressive color services. I believe that confidence is the main component for pulling off this hairstyle or any hairstyle for that matter. Anyone, no matter your race, size, gender, and age would look great in this look as long as they feel it from within.

Carefree Pixie With Glasses

Q&A with style creator, Allison
Hair Stylist @ Tangled Up Hair Studio in Long Branch, NJ

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look was is designed to be carefree and soft. My favorite thing is how it enhances her features softly contours the structure of her face. The lines compliment the features.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Due to the natural texture and wave to the hair, this style is maintained with a light styling product for short wavy hair similar to Redken’s Ringlet, Ouidad’s Texture Taffy or a sea spray. If the hair has natural wave or texture, no blow dry is necessary.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Due to the carefree nature of this style, cut and color, I find this is most flattering for women with naturally textured hair and sharp facial features. This look is no hassle, no fuss and always ready to go!

Low Maintenance Pixie

low maintenance pixie cut for old ladies

Instagram @beautebymelissa

Opt for a pixie that’s edgy and low maintenance, but fun for all ages. The best thing about it would be that you can style it to look textured and messy or more flat and sleek.

It works for women with very fine hair, but also thicker hair.

It’s a great look for women who don’t have a lot of time in the morning to do much with their hair. All it needs is a quick blow dry and a little product, then you’re out the door!

A heart or an oval-shaped face is ideal, but with a little bit of confidence anyone can pull it off.

Spunky Pixie for Over 50

spunky pixie for women over 50

Instagram @jenny.hartfordshairdressing

A spunky pixie is one of the best short hairstyles for women over 50 who are busy and need a fairly low-maintenance look! From the color to the cut, style time is minimal and it’s super versatile.

The rooted color lets you go longer between sessions so you’re not in the salon every four weeks for color. It’s young, it’s spunky, and it works well for any lifestyle!

It’s great for a fast style that’s still trendy and you aren’t spending an hour on your hair in the morning. It’s quick and fun, but still a put-together look!

Easy to Style Short Wedge Bob

Q&A with style creator, Chelsea Pritchard
Cosmetologist @ Hello Gorgeous Salon in Stillwater, OK

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

My favorite thing about this short haircut is that it’s absolutely timeless! Even with all the constantly changing styles, this one never goes out. It’s such an easy-to-style, but one of the edgier and fashionable hairstyles for women of all ages!

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

The best product I’ve found for long lasting, touchable volume is Moroccan Oil Root Boost. I just apply it lightly to the roots and use a round brush for extra volume while I blow dry. For heat protection (and since I live in Oklahoma, the humidity protection it provides is also a plus!), I always use Amika Style Shield right before I run the flat iron over the ends.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This style definitely works better for people with fuller hair because it makes a beautiful stack. Although, with the right products and tools, it can be super cute on thinner hair also!

It is a great choice for moms who don’t necessarily have a lot time to do their hair, but still need a look to make them feel feminine. It’s also for the women who just want something fun and different! The best thing about A-line bobs is how many different ways you can cut/style it to flatter all the different face shapes.

Liberated Grey Hair Shag

liberated grey hair shag

Instagram @adelejoneshairdressing

This look is sassy, messy, fun, and chic.

This look is very low maintenance. The babylights brighten her color and emphasize the shaggy layers with some disconnected layers, especially around the face.

This haircut on thinner hair is recommended for women with an oval, triangular or heart-shaped face. All lifestyles would be perfect for this look as long as the person is less detailed and more into the lived-in, undone, messy hair look.

Color That Gray Bob

Q&A with style creator, Amanda Culp
Hair Stylist/Artist @ Urban Oasis Salon in Portland, OR

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as fun and spunky, something that says age is just a number and that every women has their own kind of sass.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I highlighted with Joico Blondelife and lowlighted her with a Joico Intensity mix of magenta and pink. When styling, I used the Loma Volumizing Mousse and round brushed her out.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I feel this style is completely ageless. Anyone can enjoy this look, but I mainly recommend it for anyone with really fine hair looking for a fuller look. The cut is definitely suitable for most face shapes and the pop of color is for a client looking to embrace their spontaneity.

Layered Wavy Bob

short layered wavy bob for older women

Instagram @uplifthausstudio

Opt for a short layered bob with waves. It will give your hair texture and body because if you have very thin fine hair.

This wavy bob is great for many hair types. With this cut, you can use different lengths depending on the shape of your face.

For a rounder face, make sure the length is slightly below the chin. For someone who has a long and thin face, try to keep the length at chin level. Overall, this is a really great look for many face types as well as different types of hair.

This particular short layered cut requires styling. The time of styling always depends on how thick the hair is. To style, use mousse before blowdrying and a bit of dry hairspray at the end.

Professional Chic

Q&A with style creator, Makela
Shift Manager / Hairstylist in Boston, MA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is professional and chicm but can also be worn casually and edgy with little effort due to the fun texture! You can play with this style in many different ways.

My favorite thing about this cut and style is that it’s beautiful, weightless, easy to maintain, and very versatile.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To recreate and maintain this look, I recommend blow drying with a brush or tilting your head upside down using a mousse or styling cream gel such as Paul Mitchell’s Sculpting Foam or Fast Form.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

The type of client I recommend this cut for is almost anyone! It takes little effort to maintain as long as you don’t mind regular visits to the salon between four to six weeks. This is a good option for anyone with fine to medium hair texture. It is also good for anyone from a sporty lifestyle to a professional lifestyle. No matter what kind of life you lead, it’s simple to take care of and style!

Soft A-Line Bob

Q&A with style creator, Cassi Moore
Licensed Cosmetologist / Salon Education Director @ Toni & Guy of Colorado Springs in Colorado Springs, CO

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a soft A-line bob with minimal layering. My favorite part of cutting a graduated bob is the skill and precision it takes to create a beautifully balanced shape.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To maintain this style, I recommend TIGI Bed Head Small Talk as a wet product to thicken up the hair for a soft hold when blow drying. I also recommend TIGI Superstar Queen for a Day at the crown as a thickening spray mousse for added volume when round brushing. To finish the style, I recommend TIGI Head Rush for minimal shine and light separation.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This cut and style is ideal for medium to fine hair textures. This cut will naturally build up weight in the crown best for creating volume and lift.

In this particular bob style, I have added a texturized fringe to bring a youthful feel to this classic shape. Bobs are minimal styling maintenance, but often require more frequent cuts to maintain the shape.

Super Short Crop of Elegance

Super short crop for older women

Instagram @alanalbuquerquehair

This is a short, chic cut that has effortless style and elegance. My favorite thing about it is how it compliments the bone structure and head shape.

To maintain this look, use products like a styling lotion or cream that you like and rub it backwards through the hair when damp, then brush through and air dry or blow dry.

I recommend this look for women with thick, straight hair that doesn’t want to fuss too much with their hair but still loves style.

Layered A-Line Bob With Lowlights

Q&A with style creator, Emily Patrick
Hairstylist @ Kiwi Salon in San Marcos, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as a layered A-line with light stacking in the back. It’s very versatile because the client actually has gorgeous short curly hair, so the layers help lighten up the curls. Believe it or not, we are trying to grow out her bangs.

This look gives her the freedom to wear her hair straight, curly, or put some fun twists into it (my personal favorite). The color I use is Wella. I love getting to place the lowlights! We add them for depth and dimension, mainly around the face.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I am a big fan of Unite products. I used 7 Seconds to start her off. It’s a great leave-in conditioner that’s not too heavy and has a U.V. and thermal protectant. I then sprayed Texturiza at her roots. It gives it this AMAZING fullness with a touch of grit. My favorite round brush a 1-inch Olivia Garden to finish out the blow dry.

One tip that I love is to round brush the entire crown forward. Once the hair and scalp have cooled off, flip back in sections and enjoy the volume and the beautiful swept bangs! Finally, a touch of Unite’s U-Oil is the perfect finish to bring out that extra shine. Once you are happy with how you have everything styled, I always set the style with Big Sexy Hair Spray and Play.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

Honestly, this cut can be worn by anyone. It works for the young blogger mom who is trendy and can play with pop colors or wants to be an all-over pink, and it also completely works for women that are more current and on trend.

It’s a fun style because it can be worn sleek and straight, messy and undone, or even curled to perfection. Any face shape can wear this cut. I feel like it really depends on where the front line hits the jaw that matters, but ultimately you can have fun with the angles and the layers within the cut.

Do keep in mind shorter hair is more maintenance and does need to be kept up because it will fall flat and out of shape faster than long hairstyles typically do.

Youthful A-Line Bob with Wispy Bangs

youthful a-line bob with wispy bangs

Instagram @donalaruesalon

Opt for a youthful a-line bob with wispy bangs. It’s a chic, easy, bouncy, and voluminous cut. It can be sassy or classy. You can add texture to it to give it a piec-y look, or wear it straight and more professional looking.

This pixie isn’t for women who are very thin in the front around their hairline or women who are thinning on the top of their head. You need the length in the front to be able to achieve this look. This cut isn’t recommended for older women with thin hair that easily falls flat.

This hairstyle is very easy to style if you want to just wash it and go, round brush it under, or even put some curls in it.

Textured Bob With Soft Layers

textured bob with soft layers

Instagram @agnesmetamorfozy

This is a sharp but textured bob with soft layers to give the illusion of more volume.

Use Natalie Anne New Heights Dry Volumizing Powder on the roots to create more volume with a soft hold. Through the ends, use the Natalie Anne Undone Perfection Dry Texturizing Powder. It gives a soft hold but creates the soft movement of the layers.

This layered bob is for women who don’t like to fiddle with their hair too much or have a busy lifestyle because you can toss your head over, use the recommended product, and walk out the door. It suits older ladies with fine hair to give them more volume and movement and it helps not to weigh the hair down.

This cut is highly recommended for older women with round faces to give the more elongated look.

Grey Textured Graduated Bob for Women Over 60

Q&A with style creator, Qasim Khawaja
Hairstylist @ Stonerose Hair Studio in Toronto, CA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is a textured graduated bob with slight layering to create dimension and movement around the face, especially when the hair is pushed forward. It’s the ideal hairstyle for women over 60 with grey hair.

I cut at a 45 degree angle to create the base, then layered the top and gave her an edgy fringe. After blow drying, I took out some weight by using a couple of texturizing techniques to create movement.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I used two products to create this look. The first is called Black Caviar 12 in 1 Multi-Action hair cream by Mon Platin. The second is called Young.Again by Kevin Murphy. I sprayed the Black Caviar hair cream into damp hair, combed it through, then rough dried to about 85%. I then took two pumps of the Young.Again, emulsified it in my hands, distributed it throughout the hair, then combed it through and round brushed it with a large round brush to give fullness and volume.

The reason I used the Young.Again oil in rough dried hair is because I find it if I use it in wet hair, it just slides right off. All the product ends up on the cutting floor instead of the hair itself.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I find this look to be very versatile so it can be worn by women of all ages. I believe a bob can be pulled off by anyone if the stylist is skilled enough to make it work for the person sitting in their chair. This particular bob looks best on thick, coarse hair because it gives that lift in the back and fullness all around.

It’s most flattering on a heart-shaped face and on someone that has a narrow chin, but again, a skilled stylist should be able to create this look on any face. You can personalize the look with a full fringe or a side fringe to cater to the face shape. Young professionals or mature women love this look. I feel it empowers them.

Chic And Sporty for Over 60

chic and sporty bob for women over 60

Instagram @luce.parrucchieri

This short haircut for women over 60 is chic and sporty, yet elegant. Its shape and ease of movement make it a look that is very versatile.

Although this bob is short because of its layering and texture, a lot of movement and height can be created, allowing you to transform this cut into different shapes. This gives you the opportunity to change your hair to suit your look for that day or evening.

For more texture, use a light spray wax. For more volume, a dry matte texture spray can be used. Of course, a hairspray to finish is always a must for that extra hold!

Because of the shape of the style (being that it has volume through the top and sides, yet is tapered through the neckline), this cut is wearable for most face shapes.

The fact that it’s short and layered makes it easy to work with and style, as well as keeps it versatile. Most hair types will work with this look as well.

Eccentric Feathered Bob

Q&A with style creator, Andrea Montoya
Salon Owner / Hair Stylist @ BlueRose Hair Studio in Albuquerque, NM

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is very eccentric. The layering on this bob haircut helps out with volume. My favorite part is that after I am done blow drying this style, I then do a fast blow dry to create more bounce. This shows the layers beautifully.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To create this exact style depends on the individual. If the person has thick hair, I recommend using MoroccanOil Smooth Lotion to blow dry and MorrocanOil Molding Cream to piece out the layers. If the person has fine hair, it’s best to use a volume mousse and follow up with MorrocanOil Molding Cream.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is really great for all women who don’t like to spend to much time on their hair. Any woman with any hair type can pull off this style!

Fresh, Flirty and Versatile

Q&A with style creator, Karla Mironov
Owner / Stylist @ Karla Jean Studio in Charleston, SC

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is fresh, flirty and versatile! I love how it accentuates her face and her profile. It’s uplifting and updates her whole look in just a few snips!

My favorite thing about this look is that she can wear it scrunched for a relaxed weekend look, or she can wear it smooth and elegant for a wedding or special event.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

For this look, I used SMOOTH.AGAIN leave-in smoothing treatment by Kevin Murphy. It is hydrating, smoothing and eliminates frizz, all while providing heat protection and creating a silky feel.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look works best on fine to normal hair that’s not overly curly.

This cut can be easily modified for a variety of different face shapes since the length and the face-framing can be adjusted. For narrow faces, you might cut the hair at jaw-length to add visual width. For wider faces, you might shoot for shoulder length. This draws the eye downward and can also help those gals who have a softer jawline that they prefer not to highlight.

This look works great air dried on wavy hair for the easy going type! It also looks lovely on the socialite that enjoys a beautiful blowout.

Edgy Pixie Cut

Q&A with style creator, Sierra VanMichael
Stylist @ Van Michael Avalon in Alpharetta, GA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I describe this look as a short edgy pixie. My favorite thing about it is that it’s probably one of the most versatility short hairstyles for older women. This picture only shows one of the many ways this cut can be worn. You can also push it forward and down for more of the classic pixie look, or style it all up toward the center to make a fauxhawk with it.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I like to blow dry the hair using Aveda Thickening Paste to expand the hair strands. Really work it through the root area for some good lift. I like to follow that with Aveda Texture Tonic after the hair is dry to rough it up a bit more then mold into place.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

To me, this look is all about personality. You just have to rock it and know that you’re going to look like a badass while doing so! That is what shorter hair is all about.

This cut takes minutes to style, so if you don’t like spending that hour or two on your hair in the morning, this look would be perfect for you. The only thing is that you have to be willing to come get it trimmed every four to six weeks to keep it in the perfect shape.

I highly recommend this cut for anyone with confidence or if you are looking for a boost. Start chopping!

Versatile Bob

Q&A with style creator, Joey Fletcher
Hairstylist @ Salon Volo in Kenneth City, FL

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as versatile. The underneath is disconnected, so there is no trouble with uneven hairlines or those fine unruly hairs found in the nape.

This look can be styled smooth, curly or textured. I recommend this look for people with medium to fine hair with medium density. Thick and coarse hair is ok, but may need to be cut differently.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

The recommended products depend on how the client chooses to wear their style. For texture, use Redken Full Frame 07 with Redken Wax Blast 10. For smoothness, use Redken Velvet Gelatine 07 with Redken Quick Dry 18.

For this look in particular, I used the new Redken Glow Dry Shampoo and Conditioner. For styling, I used Redken Pillow Proof Cream with Redken Glow Dry Serum.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This style offers not only a wide range of styling options, but also a large selection of color options. This look is perfect for anyone who wants a style with multiple options and manageability.

Stylish LOB

Q&A with style creator, Jessica Baker
Stylist @ Element 5 Salon in Charlotte, NC

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look is classic with a bit of fun and sass! I love it because it is easy to maintain while looking both stylish and relaxed.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I recommend using a light texture spray/volumizing spray while the hair is wet to give it some grit and texture. After the blowout, I used a 1-inch curling iron to give a bend to the hair and finished off with a light workable hairspray for hold.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is great for low maintenance clients with a fine to medium hair type. Dimensional hair is best to show more of that textured look. It styles quickly and easily for people who live a busy lifestyle. You do not have to try too hard to make this style look great!

Classic Pixie

Q&A with style creator, Tish Cotton
Stylist @ Garnish Hair Studio in Raleigh, NC

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This look was created specifically to fit this client’s personality. It’s a very sleek, sassy and classy pixie. The warm tones and dimensional blondes complement her complexion and beautiful freckles.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

She maintains this soft look with a combination of products from R+Co, Kevin Murphy, and Davines. She uses R+Co’s Gemstone Shampoo and Conditioner, along with Kevin Murphy’s Smooth.Again for her set and blow dry. Her finishing product before her flat iron is Davines Oi Oil.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look to a client that maintains a type of smoothing treatment such as a GK Keratin treatment and/or a relaxer. Women with any face shape can rock this style as long as they have the confidence.

This pixie is perfect for the woman over 60 who wants to take less than 30 minutes to style her hair each day.

Elegant Graduated Bob

Q&A with style creator, Meire Albuquerque
Hairdresser / Color Correction Specialist @ Salon Aveda London in London, UK

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This is a bob cut with graduation that is both elegant and modern. It will never go out of style. It’s a great look for independent, strong and confident women who don’t want to settle for “grandma’s hair.”

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

I always recommend products that help give volume and body and a pomade to finish the cut. Try products that enhance the natural texture and use a leave-in product to protect from heat styling.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This look is classic and feminine. The bob cut never goes out of style, and with different techniques, becomes more modern. This cut looks good on all women. I

t can be worn straight when you want the face to appear thinner. If the face is already thin, just create layers. Talk with the client so you can adapt the cut accordingly.

Attractive Silver Strands

Q&A with style creator, Starla Lisa Musgrove
Hairstylist @ LoneStar Salon in Tumwater, WA

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look at timeless and stylish, but with a twist due to the edgy color. The silver gloss color and root shadow effect give the style an updated and modern feel. My favorite thing about this look is how effortlessly stylish it is.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

To maintain this color, I recommend L’Oreal Professional Color Corrector for Blondes. It protects your blonde highlights from brassiness with the anti-yellow Vitamino Color A-OX Color Corrector Blondes Cream. Your blonde hair color is corrected and any yellow highlights are neutralized, leaving behind a pure cool blonde. Really any silver correcting shampoo/conditioner is crucial.

For styling, L’Oreal Professional Liss Unlimited Double Serum is everything! It provides protection from frizzy hair and flyaways. With a formula enriched with Pro-Keratin, Evening Primrose Oils and Kukui Nut Oils, the Liss Unlimited Double Serum works to give the hair a sleek and softened finish, while blocking humidity as well.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this for is someone who craves a stylish look but a simple styling routine. The color is fairly high maintenance, so making sure their timeframe and budget allows them to keep this up is important.

I love this because it flatters so many face shapes with minor personalized tweaks to balance any shape. This cut looks amazing when styled straight, wavy or curly!

Asymmetrical Flair

Q&A with style creator, Bekki Engquist-Schroeder
Owner and Licensed Cosmetologist @ The Spa at Wynie Mae’s in Vermillion, SD

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

I would describe this look as playful and modern. My favorite thing about this asymmetrical pixie cut is the smile she gets having it.

The asymmetrical shape adds an element of flair that compliments her natural color, texture and personality.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

Regular trims are important. She comes in every three weeks for a reshaping. We use AVEDA Phomollient, then blow dry and finish with a dab of AVEDA Defining Whip to piece out her fringe and add some more texture without adding shine or weighing it down.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

This is one of the most ageless short hairstyles for older women. It works best on someone who is on-point with regular appointments as it requires regular upkeep. It is not matronly, yet short enough that it is easy to style. So often as we age, hair gets shorter because it is easier to manage. This cut lets that short hair be more expressive.

This can be a wash and go style if desired. Coarse hair would be a good candidate for ease of styling, and those with fine hair will find they need to use more product to get the same look.

I think confidence is key. If you feel confident, you look confident and you can pull off any hairstyle. Find a stylist you connect with, talk about your day-to-day routine and remember…it is your hair! You aren’t defined or locked into any parameters when it comes to expressing yourself through your style.

The Short Shag

Short shag haircut for older women

Instagram @coolangatta_hair_boutique

This is a variation of the short shag haircut with soft, undone texture.

This is a great cut for women with fine hair who want body and fullness. The airy choppy layers are also a great complement to square jawlines.

To style, use a volumizing mousse at the root and blow dried it in with a round brush, focusing at the crown to get plenty of volume.

Then, use Kevin Murphy’s Doo.Over and sprayed the mid-lengths and ends to get a separated look.

This look is all about the texture and to amp it up, use Doo.Over because it has the texture of a dry shampoo with a touch of hold.

Triangular Bob

Q&A with style creator, Niko Liverani
Hairstylist @ Rush Hair in London, UK

How would you describe this look and what is your favorite thing about it?

This cut has been made by utilizing the triangular bob technique. I personalized the line in order to give a short and sharp shape on both sides, which is the part that I absolutely love. It gave me the freedom to enhance my client’s features.

What products do you recommend to maintain and recreate this look?

This will sit this way for at least five to six weeks, therefore if the client would like to maintain a straight hair line, it wouldn’t need any particular recommended products.

However, if she wants to play with this style, a clay wax product is actually able to create movement in order to achieve a funky modern style.

What type of client would you recommend this look for?

I recommend this look for people who want to give a firm shape to their features. It would suit all of those who have slim and gentle features. I wouldn’t suggest it for those who have thick hair, but rather for those who have shockwave strong features as it would drastically expose their cheekbones and jawline structures.

This look matches perfectly stylish people involved in fashion. In my opinion, however, it is very versatile as it can fit in formal environments.

Feel a youthful thrill with a freshly layered, graduated chin-length cut. Some wispy bangs in front will surely complete this rejuvenating look!

Long Side Swept Bangs

Short cut with long side swept bangs for older women

A great short hairstyle idea is to add long side swept bangs with a tapered neck that blends up to volume enhancing layers at the top. The front is kept longer for a stunning side bang that frames the face beautifully. This look is very soft and wearable!

If bangs seem to bother you when you’ve had them in the past, opt for short bangs above the eye or longer ones that you can easily tuck behind your ear.

Thick Wavy Hair

This side swept, short wavy bob is super cute and a great idea for a more formal short hairstyle.

How to Style:

  1. Section up half of your hair so you can access the bottom half of your hair easier.
  2. Grab a 1-inch curling iron and curl the under part of your hair.
  3. Drop down the top section of hair and continue curling until your entire head of hair is curled.
  4. Use a flat iron to smooth bangs over to the side.

Lock in your look but keep it soft and flexible with Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Touchable Weightless Hairspray. It smells great, too!

Sassy and Short Hairstyles for Senior Women

Short hairstyles for seniors run the gamut, from sleek and sophisticated to soft and curly. Whether you color your hair or leave it a natural gray or white, you can still have the stylish look you crave and be absolutely beautiful!

Body and Shine

Just because hair is shorter, it doesn't mean that it can't have great body and shine. Use mousse or a volume enhancing product to create more body. To keep volumized hair looking shiny and healthy, use a color rinse to give your natural or dyed color have some extra shine. There are also shine sprays you can use to finish off any look.

Natural Curls

Allow the natural beauty of tight curls be on center stage with this easy style that works with any color hair. Vary the length depending on the look you want to achieve. Keep hair moisturized to avoid damage.

Bright Color

Adding bold color to short haircuts for seniors is a great way to give it some life. By adding a brilliant hair color, such as red or auburn, you create a look of elegance and intrigue. The soft layers on this style are easy to manage and require very little styling, yet the look is still refined thanks to the pop of color.

Artistic Flair

If you're fortunate enough to have beautiful, natural curls accentuated by a splash of grey, this fun hairstyle manages to look artistic without appearing sloppy. Use styling products specific to curly hair to help style the curls without frizzing.

Curls Galore

If you love longer hair but long for the convenience of a short cut, why not split the difference? Ask your hairstylist to leave your hair long enough to style in a variety of ways. Use a curling iron, hot rollers, or just a round brush to add curls all over.

Silver and Sleek

This beautiful model's face glows, and her blue eyes sparkle radiantly in contrast with her side-swept silver hair. If your hair has a similar texture, ask your hairstylist to cut your hair in layers and blow dry it into this simple yet flattering style.

Close Cut

If you're looking for the lowest maintenance haircut possible and have the confidence to go super-short, try this style that goes well with thick, naturally curly hair. Hair can be relaxed and styled for a completely different look.

Bouncing Body

Create lift and body using a round brush and a blow dryer. As you dry your hair, gently lift and blow small sections all over your head, particularly at the crown. Soft bangs play up your eyes. This style looks great on almost any shape face.

Modern Shag

Remember the shag haircut from the 70s? This shorter haircut incorporates all the layers without all the fuss. If you want the convenience and ease of a shorter haircut, but still long for more hair to work with, this haircut may be just what you're looking for!

Simple Beauty

This face-framing cut is simple, stylish, and elegant. The hair is long enough to pull back with barrettes or a headband, or it looks great left alone. If you love the look of bangs, it would be easy to add a few eye-framing bangs to this style without changing the overall look.

Fuller Short Cut

Though this cut will take some effort to style daily, the look can be accomplished easily with some hot rollers, or a curling iron, or a round brush and blow dryer. This on trend cut helps you look well put-together.

Short and Straight

Simple mature hairstyles can be surprisingly flattering. If you have straight hair, keep the length short and simple, with a few shorter layers around the forehead and the top of the hairstyle. This is a great look for many women.

Youthful Pixie Cut

A spiky pixie cut is one of the best short hair styles for seniors who want to look young and full of attitude. It is a no-fuss hairstyle that is very playful.

Whether your hair is gray, its natural color or highlighted, this is a cut that makes you look sharp, even as it softens your face.

A Confident Cut

If you want the features on your face to stand out, this swept-back style is a great choice. This style shows the confidence of a mature woman who isn't trying to hide behind hair. Avoid over-spraying, otherwise the style may take on a "Bride of Frankenstein" flair.

Short Layers

This layered haircut is great for women with thin hair since the layers can be strategically placed to hide thinning spots. This particular style is also a good choice for thick hair as the layers can help hair be more manageable when styled correctly. An experienced hairstylist can help strategically place layers and show you how to straighten your hair if necessary.

Senior Portrait Hair & Makeup Guide

  • Stay true to you! Don’t try a hairstyle, cut or color that you’ve never worn!
  • If you aren’t into styling your hair, at least make sure it is dry and brushed for your photos. Knotted, tangled hair does not photograph well!
  • Feel free to bring your hairspray with you to touch your hair up in-between outfits. *This doesn’t include the drier, or irons, please have your hair styled before you arrive*
  • If you come with clips, barrettes, or headbands in your hair, please know that we cannot retouch those out!
  • If you’re blonde and using bobby pins, get the blonde ones! If you have darker hair, use the brown pins.

[rs_space height=”30px”]
We cannot stress this enough: If you color your hair make sure to have that done at least a week before your session, this will give your color time to settle in.

I wouldn’t recommend making any drastic changes right before your photos. Just incase you hate it! We’ve all been there….

Products, products, products. Don’t even get me started on the importance of good hair products; I could go on for hours! As a licensed Cosmetologist, I have seen the power of good products! So I am going to list a few that I love, and that work really well, as well as how and when to use them (or something like them!) . I am going to show you all from Redken (because I love Redken, but you can find comparable products!) The numbers on the products go from 0-28, to show how strong the hold is. It gets your hair ready to hold the style you want.
[rs_space height=”30px”]

I recommend always putting something in your hair BEFORE you blow-dry. It’s like the basecoat of nail polish. We all know the difference that makes!
So here are a few favorites:

Extreme Anti-Snap – This is something I use daily. It goes in your hair when it is wet (1-2 pumps) and then you blow-dry, or air dry.
It will strengthen your hair and help with shine. And it smells like an Air Head candy.

Extreme Anti-Snap
[rs_space height=”15px”]
Satinwear 02 – This is something you can use in place of the Anti-Snap, it does the same thing, you use it the same way, but it adds some heat protection. That means when you blow-dry your hair the heat of the drier won’t be damaging. You know the steam you see when you blow-dry or straighten and curl? If you don’t have any protecting product on your hair…the steam is literally your hair burning. But, if you use a heat protecting product, the steam is the product working to protect! Isn’t that great!
Satinwear 02
[rs_space height=”15px”]
Aerate 08 – This product is like a Gel, Mousse all in one. It is super light weight, so it will work in any hair type. I have thin, fine hair and this doesn’t weigh it down, but I have used it on clients with massive amounts of hair and the end result is just as beautiful. Use a “quarter sized” amount, rub it into your hands then run your fingers through your hair, starting from the ends and up to your roots. This goes in wet, and then you blow-dry. You can also you spray Mouse, any kind of Gel, or even Paste! My favorite Paste is Mess Around 10, you can use it in wet hair for blow-drying or on dry hair for texture!
Aerate 08

[rs_space height=”30px”]

Now that you have the products in your hair, its time to dry it! I only use round brushes, they give volume and help get your hair smooth and create shine, who doesn’t love shiny hair? There are a ton of brushes out there, so use what you know! Section your hair from the bottom up, and work your way up to the top. The more control you have of your hair the better it will turn out. Start at the roots and work down, try to keep the air blowing DOWN your hair instead of up. This will help to cut down on frizz and fly-a-way. Practice makes perfect!

Blow DryingRound Brushes
[rs_space height=”30px”]

So now your hair is all dry, and gorgeous I am sure. You can either leave it how it is, just put a little hair spray and walk out the door; you can use the Flat Iron to straighten, or Curling Iron/Wand. So many options! The products you use next will depend on what you want your finished look to be.

Iron Shape 11 – If you want to Flat-Iron or Curl, make sure you use a product that will protect your hair from the heat. I would hate for you to come in for your session with little fried ends! This is a great product because it is lightweight and wont leave your hair crunchy, it has good hold though, and it smells good (the scent is just as important (: ) I spray it over my head then flip upside down and spray the bottom, also spray a little in-between the top and bottom. You don’t need a lot, if you spray too much your hair will get wet, that’s not what you want! If you know your hair doesn’t hold curls well, but that’s the look you want for your photos use something with more styling hold, like Hot Sets 22. Once you curl your hair, while it’s still warm, run your fingers through it. This will make sure your curls and soft and crunchy!

Iron Shape 11
[rs_space height=”30px”]

I told you I love products. There is one for everything! These last 3 are ones you can use to set everything and keep it looking good on your way here!

Wax Blast 10 – I love this one, and it smells SO GOOD. Just use a little bit to give your hair some texture and volume.
You can spray it in and then mess your hair up, or spray it and smooth it down. It’s a really versatile product!

Wax Blast 10
[rs_space height=”15px”]
Quick Dry 18 – This is a classic hairspray. I wouldn’t recommend anything stronger than this for your photos. Why? Great question, you want you hair to move with you in the photos! Don’t spray so much hairspray that your hair stays completely still! We just want to tame the fly-a-ways!

Quick Dry 18
[rs_space height=”15px”]
Shine Flash – If you know your hair isn’t naturally shiny, this product will be your best friend. I believe it smells citrusy, who doesn’t love that? Just use a little at the very end! You’ll love it!

Shine Flash

Most importantly, with hair and makeup, just be true to you! That is what we want to photograph!

90 Classy and Simple Short Hairstyles for Women over 50

A woman doesn’t stop being a woman with age: changing looks and experimenting with styles is in her nature. It is not only boring to have the same hair ‘do for decades, we also strive for more comfort with years, opting for low-maintenance short haircuts. And it doesn’t mean having one of these old woman’s helmet-like ‘dos! Short hairstyles for women over 50 can be stylish and even edgy, and we have 90 great images to prove that.

Recommendations on Short Hairstyles for Women Over 50

Women over 50 strive for respectable yet modern hairstyles. There are several rules that will help you achieve such a look. First, comb your locks back to look open up your face and look elegant. Avoid shaggy hairstyles as they appear sloppy and awkward on older women.

Bangs are ok since they make you look younger, but try to keep them neat and thin or styled to one side so that your forehead is not completely covered.

Consider lighter hair hues as they will easily take years off your face. Silver hair may look extremely flattering on older women. If you are not ready to transition to grey hair yet, think of brown to blonde solutions or highlights.

In addition, make sure you stick to general recommendations on how to choose a hairstyle for your face shape and hair texture. For example, fine hair looks cuter when cut short and layered, while thick coarse tresses feel better in elongated cuts. They don’t have to be long; Lisa Rinna’s short-to-medium hairstyle is a very good option to go for.

Classy and Simple Short Hairstyles for Older Women

Below, there are the brightest examples of short hairstyles for older ladies you might want to try.

#1: Blonde Pixie Cut

Pixie cuts are a popular variant for older women thanks to their mix of ease and playful style. Choppy layers are a perfect way to add texture and dimension to the classic cut, which is key to keeping your look youthful and not staid.

#2: Bouncy Bob for Women 50+

The only way to create shape within short haircuts for women is with an expert layered cut. If you have straight hair, you can give it extra body by flipping out the ends with a large barrel curling iron.

#3: Mature Short Layered Cut

Short haircuts for women are a good choice when you’re looking for something low maintenance. You don’t have to worry about searching for lost hair ties anymore. What’s more, the short cut is sassy and shows that style always comes first, despite your age.

#4: Youthful Pixie Haircut

Too often, women keep their hair long even though the length may be not flattering. If your stylist recommends going for a chop, don’t panic. A right pixie cut can not only give a younger appearance, but it will also save hours of styling time.

#5: Voluminous Gray Pixie Cut

In your senior years, embrace the beauty of silvery strands. It’s a beautiful hue that Millennials often turn to themselves. To add even more drama, be sure to tease those cute feathered layers.

#6: Angled Ash Blonde Cut

Older women sometimes experience softness in the face as they age. An angled cut adds sharpness to the curved edges and draws attention to the narrowness of a pointed chin.

#7: Layered Platinum Bob

Hairstyles for older women can use graying hair to their advantage. If you go for a platinum hairstyle, the color perfectly masks any pesky grey, so that you don’t have to worry about constant touch ups. Pump up the volume with a few piecey layers. It creates movement, and you can fully enjoy rocking your beautiful feathered hair.

#8: Rounded Bob with Stacked Nape

Rounded bobs are a classic choice for mature women’s haircuts, as they are full of elegance and sophistication. Build an enviable height around the crown of your head when you are blow drying with a round brush.

#9: Pixie Undercut for Women Over 50

Pixies with an undercut show us how short hairstyles for women over 50 can come packed with a punch! Luscious waves soften the edgy cut, giving the hairstyle a sassy aesthetic.

#10: Choppy Blonde Pixie with Long Side Bangs

The pixie is one of the most popular short haircuts for older women. This is because it adds texture and a tousled finish to thin hair. If you team the pixie with long side bangs and choppy layers, you can easily create a style that’s fun, youthful, and easy to manage.

#11: Angled Undercut Hairstyle

Women can rock the traditionally masculine undercut just as well as any man can. Make it feminine with a long, straight top and a blonde hue with ample highlights. To dial up the volume (and avoid the pageboy look), have your stylist add in subtle layers.

#12: Long Curly Salt and Pepper Pixie

Textured fine hair can benefit from a pixie cut. Worn in a natural salt and pepper coloring, curls appear bouncy and fluffy. Enhance this youthful essence by leaving a longer face-framing strand on your forehead and styling with mousse or water-based wax products.

#13: Short Voluminous Feathered Hairstyle

Feathered hairstyles generate soft, fluent looks for short and lackluster locks. They also add dimension to your hair while still allowing easy maintenance. Simply apply a smoothing cream to your bed head and you’re good to go for the rest of the day!

#14: Layered Pixie with Textured Bangs

Who said senior ladies can’t rock punk-inspired ‘dos? Simple but statement-making, the layered pixie with textured bangs suits straight hair perfectly. Top off with streaks of your favorite fun colors.

#15: Airy Gray Pixie with Lots of Layers

For ladies who are struggling to keep their hair luscious and rich in color as they age gracefully, the airy gray pixie might be a good haircut to try. It entails lots of layers to keep your locks looking funky and stylish. It also exposes your ears enough to make room for some dazzling statement earrings for smarter occasions.

#16: Wispy Silver Bob

While bob is a staple haircut, there are countless ways to make it unique to express your personal style. Have your hair cut at an angle for some drama. Then, opt for loose, tousled curls to enhance the volume. Accentuate your beautiful gray locks with a balayage that brings more depth to the cut.

#17: Pixie Bob with Nape Undercut

Out of all haircuts for older women, pixie bobs are arguably the most popular. Give your pixie cut some edge with a nape undercut that brings individuality and spice — formal in the front, modern party in the back!

#18: Gray Bob with Delicate Layers

Delicate layers soften any bob and appear extra feminine when worn in a clear, shiny gray. If you have thin hair, consider this hairstyle, as the white highlighted pieces give enough dimension and sophisticated appeal to your hair, making it fuller and visually more interesting.

#19: Feminine Shorter Hairstyle for Curly Hair

One of the prettiest hairstyles for older women, this cut is perfect for those with authentically curly or wavy tresses. Feminine and chic, it looks fabulous with any color, complements the natural grain of your hair, and allows you to style with ease.

#20: Tapered Gray Pixie with Textured Crown

Short hair doesn’t limit styling options that much — adding a textured crown to your pixie is a simple but effective way to smarten up your cut. Perfect for professional environments, tapered cuts look particularly vivacious in salt and pepper.

#21: Pure Blonde Ambition

From Audrey Hepburn’s to Anne Hathaway’s, the pixie cut has become a by-word for chic hair; it’s endlessly elegant with just the right level of nonchalance. A slight update of the old style goes a long way. Experiment with texture to add a modern twist to this classic crop. With trendy highlights, shorter hairstyles for older women instantly become contemporary, without being faddish.

#22: Choppy Gray Pixie

Short haircuts for women over 50 should look contemporary to take years off your looks. This style has side bangs, a mildly defined taper, and textured layers around the crown proving that customizations can completely alter the look of your tried and true pixie!

#23: Short Messy Lilac Hairstyle

Don’t just throw out the rulebook, burn it. Fun, fashionable hair is no longer just for the young. Whatever your age, it’s time to experiment and go as wild as you like with your short haircut. Leave your self-doubt at the door and step your style up a notch with pastel highlights.

#24: Short Layered Blonde Hairstyle

Very short hair doesn’t flatter everyone. If you prefer longer hair to short styles, keep your cut on the lengthier side with a chic pixie bob. A trendy light color like platinum, gray or ash blonde will illuminate your face and prove to be a low-maintenance hairstyle if you want to cover natural grey hair or make it look purposeful.

#25: Edgy Pixie Bob

There’s something timeless about a good bob hairstyle. This shorter take blends the classy look of a bob with an edgy pixie cut. The end result is incredibly chic. Invest in a good flat iron as the styling will take a some time if you want to get all of those layers smooth.

#26: One-Length Balayage Bob with Bangs

One can never go wrong with a one-length bob. Minimal layers create a cute shape to your cut. It’s short hair that still can be styled in different ways – straight, curly or wavy. A modern balayage color will make the style completely current.

#27: Short Bob with Long V-Cut Layers

To create a fashionably elegant and sophisticated look, you can opt for a simple layered bob. Ask your hair stylist for long V-cut layers: this adds texture and body while simultaneously taking the weight out of thick hair.

#28: Layered Tousled Salt and Pepper Bob

When the color of your hair looks like a blend of your natural hue and gray, it’s known as “salt and pepper” hair. It’s undeniably striking in layered and tousled bobs. Designed to appear messy and effortless, they suit almost every face shape and skin tone.

#29: Textured Pixie with Highlights

A tailored pixie has been #1 on the “short haircuts for older women list” for a while. What sets this one apart is the detailing. Notice the deep side part that leads to a fun bang and the two tone coloring. The highlights are rich in the front to not draw too much attention to the face and then get sparser in the back to add some dimension.

#30: Short Haircut with Neat Side Fringe

Short haircuts are usually completed with short, medium or long bangs. Next time you’re at the salon, make sure you ask your hairstylist for a side-swept fringe. With a layered short cut, this will instantly slim and flatter your face.

#31: Long Ash Blonde Pixie for Fine Hair

Go to the ashier range of blonde for a more subdued vibe that still carries just as much impact as bolder images. Fine hair benefits from a longer-cut pixie with short structured layers in the back. Don’t be afraid of the grown in roots look — it makes your hair appear thicker and adds to visual impact!

#32: Brown and Blonde Graduated Bob

Graduated haircuts are marvelous for mature ladies, as they ooze elegance and class. With age, our hair may become finer, so graduated locks give the desired appearance of fullness and volume.

#33: Feathered Back-Swept Crop

Luckily, gray hair is more popular today than ever before, and that means you can embrace your real hair color and flaunt it proudly. If your hair is fairly thick, pick a feathered cut and style it with a root lift that gives the desired volume and air. Short hairstyles for women over 50 have never been more elegant and modern!

#34: Silver Pixie for Fine Hair

Silver has become a trendy color option recently for women of all ages. We can definitely credit our lovely mature ladies with being the founding mothers of this fad. The cool tone accentuates blue eyes and pairs well with all short haircut styles.

#35: Blonde Balayage Bob with Angled Layers

Angled layers in short hairstyles for older women bring edge and definition, which in turn create a youthful and fresh essence! It’s important to let a professional hairdresser guide you as to how to style your cut, so you can show off your chic balayage bob at its best.

#36: Short Choppy Hairstyle for Thick Hair

Thick hair can be extremely difficult to deal with and style on an everyday basis. The short haircuts for women over 50 that tend to work best when it comes to thick, coarse hair are those of the choppy nature. These cuts might be slightly less contemporary than others, but they’re so much easier to manage and care for.

#37: Jaw-Length Bob with Layers for Fine Hair

More versatile than an average bob, a jaw-length cut allows different styling options. This hairstyle produces the best visual results when left natural; however, it’s nice to have the option to curl the front pieces for dressier occasions. Pair with glasses to create a smart, classy everyday look.

#38: Asymmetrical Silver Pixie

How do you transform a simple pixie cut into a head-turning style? Make it asymmetrical. This unexpected shape instantly adds drama and an elegant twist. It’s a great option for showing off your cheekbones. Pair with a rich metallic color and embrace that sassy silver fox you see in the mirror.

#39: Playful Blonde Curls

Tight curls, loose waves – whatever the mix, don’t let your natural style droop. Have your hair cropped into layers to encourage your natural root lift to find its own direction. All curly short haircuts for women require a little help in the definition department, so purchase a smoothing serum for that added extra attitude.

#40: Short Layered Hairstyle for Thick Hair

If you’re blessed with a thick mane, textured layers will be your best friend! Not only do they make your life easier (in terms of regular washing/styling time), they also provide beautiful texture and fundamental structure to cuts.

#41: Lovely in Lavender

Use white hair to your advantage. It makes a great backdrop for the softest pastel colors without the tedious effort of bleaching and toning. Create fullness with short feathered layers and wispy fringe for a funky and fun style.

#42: Choppy Pixie with Tapered Nape

For a quirky yet modern ‘do for short hair, ask your hairdresser for a choppy tapered pixie cut. The taper gradually shortens the length of your tresses from the top of your head down to the nape of your neck. It might be one of the shortest haircuts, but it sure is fashion-forward.

#43: Chic Chocolate Layers

Many believe that the babylights technique — where very fine, delicate highlights are woven throughout—is only for blonde hair. But, it can actually work for any color as long as you make the highlights a few shades lighter than the base. The result is the natural-looking shimmer like in the photo.

#44: Voluminous Classic Cut

Voluminous classic short cut is a beautiful way to wear some older women hairstyles that will never seem too boring or stuffy. With a bit of product and a hair-dryer you can create a fresh and flirtatious short hairdo at any age.

#45: Cropped Gray Pixie with Swoopy Bangs

A pixie is a classic hairstyle and a timeless cut that always looks good. Tailor yours to suit your facial features and your personality. See how the long side-swept bangs bring out the funky frames and amazing cheekbones.

#46: Pixie for Women Over 50

Pixies are among the most popular short hairstyles for women, but they best suit women with slim faces because they show off high cheekbones. Cropped cuts are perfect for older females because they provide texture for limp thinning strands.

#47: Short Ruffled Hairstyle with Blonde Highlights

Curly and wavy hair styles offer movement while softening facial features, which is crucial to women concerned about fine lines or wrinkles. Staying away from rigid cuts and styles makes you look younger.

#48: Honey Blonde Layered Bob with Short Back

Hairstyles for older women look extra sweet in honey blonde and are usually full of layers, as varying lengths builds volume and boosts texture. Add grain with texturizing sprays and maintain luster of locks by using products for hair shine.

#49: Silver and Sophisticated

Silver hair makes a striking statement in super short styles because it looks cool and chic at the same time. To create depth, mix in a dark charcoal hue at the roots.

#50: Over 50 Pixie with Lots of Piece-y Layers

A more traditional cut for women over 50 may be the right fit if lean more towards the classic style. Don’t forget to show off all the piece-y layers by accentuating them with highlights!

#51: Ruffled Pixie

Short edgy pixie with highlighted ends is effortless in styling and fabulous-looking in day-to-day wear. Besides, it’s a great coloristic pattern for gray hair in brunettes. You are going to look much younger, fresher and brighter.

#52: Volume and Shagginess

Raquel Welch is simply irresistible. Her edgy voluminous shag screams with beautiful texture and wonderful choice of hair hues. A nice lift at the roots and layers of flicks for fairly thick hair are exactly what it takes to achieve this fabulous effect.

#53: Gorgeous Feathered Look

Fun texture and fabulous volume around the crown with tapered sides and the back create this incredible short hairstyle with a cute feathered finish. It bears just the right amount of sassiness to make an impression of a modern and active lady. Is that you?

#54: Burnt Orange Bob with Highlights

A bob cut is above time, it’s elegant and classy. It’s a good solution for transition from long locks to shorter hairstyles which are, however, not extremely short. Pair it with thin bangs and consider illusive highlights for a modern quirk.

#55: Soft Auburn Look

Here is a layered chin-length haircut combed back to open the facial contours. Backcombing close to the roots and nonchalant bangs caressing the forehead bring this sweet look to perfection.

#56: Short Wispy Style for Fine Locks

Fine tresses seem thicker when cut short. With brown blonde coloristic solution like this and subtle backcombing, you’ll add some more body to your short tresses. Style them backwards for a gorgeous elegant look with a tint of carelessness.

#57: Sassy Pixie

Sharon Stone demonstrates one of the most inspiring examples of short hairstyles which are sassy, stylish and quite acceptable over 50. This texturized pixie is enhanced with a few bold nonchalant spikes on top. We would recommend this to women with oval faces and regular facial features.

#58: Two-Tone Spiky Short Haircut

Maybe you don’t want to embrace your grays. There is no shame in that! Go bold with a two-tone pixie: a blonde top and brunette bottom. Mix some darker lowlights through the crown to add dimension and tie the look together.

#59: Short and Simple Cut for Women Over 50

When you are retired, you want a hairstyle that requires minimal effort and won’t need frequent trips to the salon. Short layers will retain the shape of the cut as it grows out. Plus, it doesn’t require much prep work in the morning — just brush and go.

#60: Short Curly Hairstyle

Show off your curls with a short cut. If you opt for a warm hue, use highlights to break up the color and accentuate the texture. Want to know how to style this look on your own? It’s as simple as wash and go, just tousle your ringlets with a little bit of product to enhance the curl pattern.

#61: Spiky Gray Pixie Cut

Some short hairstyles for women over 50 can require some serious styling time. A spiky pixie is an ideal way to keep your hair very short and manageable with minimum styling. Just make sure you have a styling wax on hand to separate and define the shortest layers. The sweeping bang softens the look without adding too much maintenance.

#62: Classy Slanted Blonde Bob

Consider simple and classy short hairstyles for women over 50, such as the slanted bob, also called the angled bob. This haircut is just as sleek as it is chic. The cut tends to work best for ladies with naturally straight hair as the angle is further enhanced when your locks are styled smooth. However, the slanted bob can also be styled wavy, curly, or textured for a change.

#63: Short Wavy Inverted Bob

Women’s bobs can come in all shapes and sizes, the inverted bob being a popular hairstyle for younger, middle-aged and older ladies. This cut is different from the classic bob: it’s all about stacking layers at the back and gradually elongating lines towards the front to create a unique, low-maintenance shape. The hairstyle works great for both streight and naturally wavy tresses.

#64: Voluminous Two-Tone Cut

Short layers around the crown of the head are key for adding volume to your cut. This is especially useful for ladies with a round face as the height will lengthen the overall shape. Adding some bold contrasting colors on the sides visually balances the volume on top.

#65: Salt and Pepper Voluminous Cut

Intertwined shades of black and silver give women a very natural-looking yet gorgeous hairstyle. Compliment this palette with an elegant short bob that features long feathered layers. Apply some root lifting mousse to damp hair and blow dry it backwards with a round brush for added volume and polish.

#66: Gray Hair with High Layers

When looking through hairstyles for older women, focus on those that don’t make the face look too severe. As we age, our features become sharper, which is especially true for slim women. Feathered layers styled away from the face will help add movement and soften facial features. Iconic Jane Fonda is often seen with such a classy style.

#67: Chic Blonde Pixie Bob for Over 50

The mom-that-has-it-all-‘do is the best way to describe this haircut. There’s nothing simple about this chic cut, as it has so many bright details: long, sweeping strands near the face, short pixie layers at the crown, and the stacked bob at the back.

#68: Short Bob with Feathered Layers

Feathering is another way to update women’s short haircuts. Reduce the stiffness of a more structured cut by using razor-cutting tools and choosing subdued, not harsh shades like the forgiving salt and pepper.

#69: Short Asymmetrical Bob

Guess it would be nice to refresh your traditional bob? Try a trendy asymmetrical style. This option works great with fine straight hair and can be used to draw attention to your beautiful jawline.

#70: Messy Salt and Pepper Pixie

Hollywood celebrities are often seen with a messy pixie. However, you don’t have to be a pop or a movie star to pull off this edgy style. The laid-back color palette allows for a funkier finish without seeming over the top.

#71: Layered Bob for Fine Hair

Often, our hair texture changes as we age becomming thinner. This is why layers are a recurring feature of short haircuts for women over 50. The stacked lengths instantly add volume to the style, which is a blessing for women with fine hair.

#72: Messy Pixie Bob

The pixie bob is one of the best short haircuts if you still want some length to play with. Stacked layers in the back are easy to manage, and the elongated pieces in the front frame your face nicely. Style straight for a crisp finish or with waves for a bed head look.

#73: Platinum Pixie Cut

Mature women have a unique benefit of rocking platinum hair and still looking completely natural. Such a striking color can really stand on its own with no variation of shade. The cool tones will spotlight the workmanship put into the cut.

#74: Pixie Bob with Blonde Babylights

Babylights are highlights that are very subtle and add a sun-kissed look to your hair. Shown here, they lift the top layers to keep the style from looking flat. It’s a technique that can be used in all short hairstyles for older women and it’s especially useful if you have fine hair.

#75: Silver Bob with Hint of Purple

A side-parted bob that sweeps across the forehead frames the face and works very well for women with glasses. Such a tailored cut turns out to be the perfect base for an unexpected pop of color. Thin streaks of purple are a gorgeous addition to a head of silver hair.

#76: Messy Pixie with Chunky Highlights

A pixie with a messy finish is a great way for women with straight hair to achieve some movement. It’s also a low-maintenance option in comparison to other short styles. A quick dry, a bit of styling wax, and you’re set. Chunky highlights will add drama and accentuate the varying directions of your locks.

#77: Gray Pixie for Thick Hair

Shorter haircuts for older women with thick hair naturally feature lots of volume and texture. This means that you can sport shorter cuts without looking flat.

#78: Blonde Bob with Bangs

Pop culture is obsessed with taking things like “dad hats” and making them cool. Next up: the mom bob. Short hair cuts that typically have been styles of busy moms on-the-go are now desirable with many different age brackets. A nice mix of ash blonde and brown tones makes them modern.

#79: Asymmetrical Pixie Bob

Meryl Streep redefined the asymmetrical bob in The Devil Wears Prada. The short length paired with a sweeping exaggerated bang screamed chic and was not off-limits for the mainstream. There are many great pictures of this exact style floating around, so take a few to your stylist and tailor it to make it your own.

#80: Sassy and Stacked

Stacked hair styles are beneficial for women over 50 for a couple of reasons. First, placing multiple short layers on top of each other allows achieving a voluminous bump. Second, they provide a modern and youthful edge to basic bob cuts.

#81: Straight Bob with Bangs

Modern short women’s haircuts never fail to deliver the perfect style for ladies of all ages, so make sure you have them on your radar. Take this bob, for instance: it is sleek, sophisticated, age-defying and simply timeless.

#82: Stacked Bob with Bangs

The stacked bob delivers beautiful height to your hair. Bangs balance the tapered back, while caramel highlights bring warmth to the brunette color. The chocolatey hue exudes youthful style that is simply irresistible.

#83: Dark Brown Cut with Textured Tresses

Next time you hit the hairdresser, make sure to ask for added texture. Why? Not just is it ‘cool’, but it’s wearable. It’s daring and youthful without being outrageous. And, it’s modern and interesting without requiring much maintenance. Professionals suggest mussing a pixie cut with your fingers after a shower to lift roots and to get the right texture.

#84: Pixie Bob with Soft Blonde Highlights

As a face ages, it is important to let hair compliment its changing complexion. A short hairstyle for a woman that softens the silhouette and the shade can be an excellent way to distract from the small effects of advancing age. For a fresh new spin on the pixie, diffuse harsh, solid-color blocks of your short hairstyle with layers of warm and delicate, dimensional hues.

#85: Purple Haze Update

Hair inevitably goes gray after a certain age, and it’s best to surf the silver wave rather than fight it. That said, there’s no need to totally embrace grey and live with it forever. With natural gray hair, your locks no longer need to be bleached to show color. So, you may try a light pastel shade and experiment with technicolor highlights.

#86: Blonde Bob with Smoky Violet Highlights

We vote for no more boring short hairstyles for women. Step up your classy blonde bob with the flick of an unexpected color. Reign supreme with a double-take purple streak or pep your pixie up with a slick lick of pink.

#87: Gray Pixie for Over 50

Here is a wash-and-go hairstyle that everyone will love. It even doesn’t need any styling products! A great idea for straight hair of decent thickness and an oval or triangular face shape.

#88: Black Choppy Pixie with Red Bangs

Long live rock & roll! You don’t have to commit to a whole head of a bright color; mere adding some colorful peek-a-boo highlights to your bangs injects a dose of edge into your classic short hair style.

#89: Carol Brady Inspired Hairdo

Here’s a wonderful example of a short women’s haircut inspired by TV icon, Carol Brady, and her signature mock mullet. Although that may not sound too stylish, it works well for older ladies. There are layers and volume on top tapered towards the cute feathers covering the nape.

#90: Sleek Gray Bob with Balayage

Embrace the gray with a subtle balayage that brings dimension to your strands. The popular coloring will accentuate your hair’s high and low notes. Pair that with a sleek bob, and you’re a bonafide silver fox.
